The Sound of Music
The streets of Salzburg resonate
With multi Mozart revelry
By every arch and rustic gate
Play international minstrelsy.
And soon the von Trapp tour appears
Our jolly ladies sing-a-long
"Ah look ! That's where the little dears
Performed their Madel icing song !"
Yet just beyond these charming scenes
Was Hitler's wartime Adler lair
And coaches seeking darker dreams
Depart to fog the alpine air.
And Wagner down the mountain rolls
To crush the tongues of sweeter souls.
(Madel = Yiddish for Madchen= Girl)
Quite intriguing. Is this an original piece?
Eerily contemporary......
Is that true of dictators and war?
The piece is based on a three day visit to Salzburg last Summer.
Apparantly the filming of Sound of Music required "delicate" negotiations with the city council regarding the filming of the Nazi scenes and the hanging of swastika flags. However the locals were probably ambivalent since a fair amount of tourist trade is concerned with tours to nearby Berchtesgarten.
