It seems that dash is longer than hyphen in English. How can I type dash in a text editor?
Two hyphens are acceptable. Many programs will convert this to a dash for you, but two hyphens are acceptable.
Most keyboards do not include buttons for dashes other than the hyphen. You can use Character Map to copy any character you want to the clipboard then paste it into any application, or many word processors (e.g. Microsoft Word) include shortcuts to type out various dashes. For example, in Word, type:
text -- text
and the 2 hyphens will automatically be converted to a dash. Or type:
text--text
& the 2 hyphens will be converted to a longer dash (I don't know the correct terms for them).
Monger, I think the longer dash is called an em dash. Roberta would know.
Yes, there are en-dashes [alt + 0150] and m-dashes [alt + 0151].
(em-dash is the width of an M, en-dash the width of an N in the same font.)
