Well, one thing that you can do BEFORE you download is to check this:

http://www.spywareguide.com/product_list_full.php

If you want to be really careful, install:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Then AFTER you have installed a program, run both these spyware removers.

shareaza is an open source client that has no adware or spyware and is the best p2p client I have seen.

Limewire has harmless adware (just banners) and iMesh comes with heaps of spyware and adware, including some of the nastiest stuff out there.

BTW relying on a post-intsall scan is not safe, as no anti scumware software removes and detects well and in the majority of the time will not help.

For example, if you install iMesh adaware and spybot are not likely going to be able to help you.

Your best protection is knowledge for prevention.

I don't know what "Shareaze" is but Shareaza contains no spyware. It's open source so if you know your way around code you can read the source code and see for yourself.

You can learn how to program from a variety of sources. I don't have any specific recommendations because you asked for a document that would teach you what would likely take you years to learn.

I don't know of any specific document but I can tell you that curiosity to search for information with a search engine is how most programmers learn.
