Three guys go to a hotel and tells the clerk they want to rent a room. The clerk says: "Fine, that'll be $30." They all take $10 each and pay the man, and go to their room. The manager of the hotel told the clerk: "You messed up man, today is Friday and it costs $25 a night, so go up to the guests and give them their $5 dollars back." The clerk takes 5 one dollar bills and goes up to the room. He tells the guys that he will give them each a dollar and keep two just as a tip. This means that each individual payed $9 each. Multiplying that by three is $27 dollars and the clerk keeping $2 makes the sum be $29 dollars. What happened to the missing dollar?
Simple logic mistake. They paid $10 each, so when they are given back $1 each, and then adding in the tip, makes the bill $27, not 25 or 30.
Yea, the correct answer is that it is due to a mathematical error...If you were to multiply their 9 dollars it would make 27 dollars, and with the two dollars the clerk kept makes it 29 dollars and it is impossible to get to 30 dollars
Huh? No, the total bill including the tip was $27 = 3 x 9.
No....originally they paid 30 meaning they payed 10 each....the clerk only returned 1 dollar each...that means they payed 9 dollars each...9 x 3= 27...and then the clerk kept 2, 27 +2 =29....meaning the dollar still is missing....
Cost of room: $25
Tip: 2
Total: $27
Paid: $30
Change: 3
End of explanation.
I think you misread the OG question...
3 guys originally pay $30
Clerk goes back to give them $5 but doesnt and gives them only 3 bucks
3 guys now only payed 9 dollars which means that together they payed 27 dollars
The clerk keeps two...and then the final sum is 29
Don't ever work a cash register.
I don't and I don't ever want to....
There were $30 at the beginning.
The room cost $25, leaving $5 leftover.
Each guy received $1 back ($3).
Clerk kept $2 as a tip.
$25 (room) + $3 (change) + $2 (tip) = $30.
That's all there is to it.
