Computer crashes with a constant pc speaker beep

this has been going on for over a year, it would crash like this (basically it would slow down and then the windows clock would just stop, then any input would cause a constant beep and not respond entirely. Until i reformated my computer this would occur every 5-10 minutes after windows XP had booted. I had the same problem with windows 98 before I installed XP like a year ago. When I installed XP i did so that 98 and XP worked as a dual boot system, the problem persisted.
Last week I reformated my computer entirely and installed XP without the 98 partition. for a couple of days, it worked without crashing. then it started to crash in that exact same way even though I hadn't really installed any real software except basics like winrar, much like when i first installed XP as a dual boot system for the first few days it didn't crash and then it started to.

It's also important to state that as of the time i first installed XP along with 98, i had done so after changing my hardware entirely, different motherboard, an additional harddrive and even sound card, only thing that stayed was the first hard drive which had 98, which was reformatted last week when I installed this as an XP alone system. so if it's hardware based, it would be in the harddrive, no conflicts at all are reported from device manager. it's just really really annoying and if anyone could give me any insight on what i can do to resolve the cause, i'd appreciate it. At the moment the computer crashes as mentioned but only after several hours usually. Thank you for your time guys Very Happy

I think I'd start looking foir some basic diagnostic utilities and run those for a bit to see what's going on. It sounds like you have some sort of recurring hardware error (possibly heat related).

Is there anything in your WinXP event log?

I'm with fishin' on this one - could well be related to processor overheatin' - too little power supply output might be another thing to look at, but a little less likely, unless you've added a buncha buss-powered stuff like drives and cards. Less likely, but still possible, it might be related to your RAM - bad module, mis-matched modules, intermitent fault in a module or slot ... buncha possibilities. Definitely think the symptoms point to a hardware problem.

Quick question - have you overclocked either your processor or your video adapter?

I've never overclocked neither, and actually I had to replace my MB because the power supply give away and harmed the mother board itself. But the replacement hardware includes a rather large, very very large, fan for the processor so if its a matter of overheating i'd rule it out. Is there anyway I can check about the heating thing though or any other types of tests you guys would like me to do for further analysis? Smile And where is the XP event log? everytime it crashes like that it runs a scandisk on boot but that's all I've seen from it

The Event Log is in your Control Panel. Open the Control Panel and then "Adminstrative Tools". Open the "Event Viewer" in Administrative tools and look at the Application and System logs for hints to what's going on.
