The Hollow Man
I look into the mirror and my reflection looks back at me
And I wonder, what has more substance, myself or what I see
I have become a shell, no longer am I flesh and bone
A hollow man, a desperate man, afraid and all alone
There was a time when I had the world in the palm of my hand
A loving wife and beautiful children was just the life I had planned
But I lost it all, then I lost myself and now here I am
A hollow man, an angry man, living the life of the damned
The man I was, a tower of strength, has fallen by the side
Cut down by fear and circumstance, that man I was has died
Left standing is but a shadow, just waiting for the sun to fade
A hollow man, a foolish man, regretting the choices I've made
I like your handle, Mr. Poetic injustice.
Your poem was a declaration that many people feel, and it was excellent in examining the lousy decisions that we have made in life.
I never cared for T.S. Eliot, either, but I am beginning to examine The Hollow Men carefully, because of the last stanza. Hope to see more of your poetry, my friend.
Powerful.
Facing ourselves is the most challenging thing we can ever do.
Thanks for sharing it!
A most excellent poem, friend. Keep them coming!
thanks Letty, the name fits like a well tanned glove. My writing is an injustice to poets everywhere lol.
thanks Brand and Kelly, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment
You have talent. I would be interested to read more.
thanks so much Edgar. I will continue posting new stuff as I write them, and will throw some of the old on here as well.
Keep them coming, you grinchly poet!
I really liked this as well, and I am glad you are no T.S. Eliot. I'm not a big fan myself. This speaks to all people. Keep posting.
thanks Cav. I posted this in another forum once, and was told to scrap the title as most would compare it to Eliot. At that time I had no idea who Eliot was, and had never heard of The Hollow Men. I liked mine better than his, so I kept the title. LOL!!
