CD-Rom gone crazy

Arrow Strange things has been happening here, it started with my CD-ROM ( its a factory installed CD-ROM in My Compaq Presario ) making crazy noises with the tray sliding in and out.. i could do nothing to stop it.. couldnt shut down, so i'd to resolve to turning the power off..

It took several attempts to reboot, eventually i've managed to do a system restore , at this stage my separate Sony CD-RW was functioning OK, but not before long the CD-ROM made same noises again.. ( i did not have a CD in the drive either occassions ) this time i could shut down without turning the power off.

Now my Sony-CD-RW has stopped working too, when i do a hardware check the test says that its working ok..
I might add here that im unable to open the trays as well....

As well as this hassle my comp seem to freeze up for short periods.. Rolling Eyes

The list of attempts to solve this issue as follows:

First I'd checked but couldnt find my CD-ROM in " my Computer" its gone without a trace

Done 3 system restores..

have run virus checks; with McAfee, run Stinger, AVG and Spybot all came back clear

in addition today an ERROR GUARD has propped up... warning me that I'd 47 errors in my computer !! I DID not download it.. it appeared to have been from Microsoft. :.

any suggestions of how to solve these problems would be appreciated,

Hi mata
post a HJT log please, lets see if anything is running in your start ups that shouldn't be.
Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log
This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.
Most things are harmless and needed so don't make any changes.
post a log here please.

Hi Don Smile , thanks for your reply..

things are continiuing to be strange.. this morn Windows wouldn't load.. eventully i'd turned the power off, when restarted it first i had a black screen with a notice " the following disks has been updated.." and two sets of numbers but it dissappeared before i could copy it.. windows still wouldnt load..
an other restart this time i tapped the F8 button.. requested a startup in normal mode... and bingo.. it worked. The CD-ROM light is on..and of course its still not working..

Hi Mata,

Please go Here and unzip the newest version of HJT into a new dedicated folder,
Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt. Unzip HijackThis into this folder.
Remove the older version you currentl have now,

Next,
Please restart HJT put a check next to the following, close all open windows and click "Fix Checked"

Next reboot to safe mode ( By tapping the F8 key on start up) Make sure you can view all Hidden Files/Folders search for and delete the following in BOLD

Restart your computer, Post back a fresh log please

Hi Don... here is my new HJT log..

couple of things though..

when in safe mode i was not able to see the hidden folders..even though i'd changed the settings to enable me .. did i miss someting..? Embarrassed

please have a look at my log.. and im sure you'll be able to see if i'd made a mess of things Sad ...

Hi Don.. thanks for your help.. im glad that this is ok.. but my comp still has its moments... freezes up for short periods , could it be from this faulty CD-rom? At times when the CD-ROm light is on ( the tray can not be opened at all Rolling Eyes ) i cant use my CD-WR.. would you have any idea how to deal with this apart from getting it to a repair shop ?
