More mysterious lyrics, folks. This one by Sir Elton John:

Daniel
Elton John
(Elton John/Bernie Taupin)

Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes

They say Spain is pretty though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much

Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky

Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes.

What's your take on that one, listeners?

Oh, my. Listeners. This thread must be going to the dogs. <smile>

Serious stuff here, all.

Just heard Peter Jennings warning us about Choice Point. Criminals have hacked into their site and the result is massive identity theft.

Oh, my!

Do you all realize that WA2K is almost 200 pages long?! That is just amazing! I'm scheduling an office party as soon as we hit 200. Everyone bring hors d'oeuvres. Drinks will be paid for out of petty cash.

(Calm down, Letty. I said "PETTY" cash. Smile )

Hey all you music buffs, take a look at this:

BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL
Thursday 17 February - Monday 28 March 2005 TBC

Julie Andrews hosts this entertaining 100-year history of Broadway, celebrating the stars and revealing the impact of social and political events. Interviews, original cast recordings and newsreels tell the story from the immigrant experience in the 1900s to today's big-budget productions.

Well, thanks! That's the same thing, isn't it. We get a chance to see it starting tonight on BBC4.

BBC3 and BBC4 are two of the new digital channels and their output is pretty good (compared with the other so-called "terrestrial" channels here)

Thanks Aggie

Good morning, WA2K radio listeners.

Eva, you know how to throw a party, girl, and it's a good thing that it's going to be financed by PETTY instead of LETTY. <smile> As a matter of fact, Richard Petty is a race car driver in Daytona Beach. We'll invite him, too.

McTag and Raggedy, That looks fabulous and Julie Andrews was the original fair lady.

Here's a bit of etymology for edgar and all relating to the word "gringo"

Well, first, the word doesn't refer to North Americans, but instead to non-Hispanics, especially of European origin. However, gringo did not originate in the Americas, but in Spain, where it applied to an even more specific group: Greeks. Yes, gringo is a corruption of Spanish Griego "Greek", which comes from Latin Graecus and ultimately from Greek Graikos. It originally referred to the apparent babble spoken by foreigners (in 18th century Spain), and later to the foreigners themselves. As for gringo's age as an English word, it first appeared in print in English in 1849.

There are a few who promulgate the notion that gringo arose among Mexican Spanish-speakers because the Americans sang a song containing the words "green grow the lilies" during the Mexican-American War, and the Mexicans named them after the first two words of the song. This is certainly incorrect.

Hmmm. I was wrong on that one, and I also recall the song having been Green Grow the Lilacs.

Let's all check out McTag's and Raggedy's listing, and perhaps enjoy some great broadway productions from the past.

I do hope EOE returns soon to tell us all is well.

Green Grow the Lilacs is the original play by Lynn Riggs from which the musical "Oklahoma" was adapted. Oklahoma is one of the TCM offerings this month - actually it will be shown in the wee A.M. hours tomorrow. You can visit The Lynn Riggs Museum when you're in Oklahoma.

As for the song Green Grow the Lilacs, I'll bet that Edgar has a lovely recording of it by Harry Belafonte. Very Happy

Funny, I looked up "Gringo" yesterday. I was looking for a definition of it for my movie quiz. Loads of synchronicity here.

Looking forward to your party, Eva.

And McTag, the Broadway special was superb. You'll love it.

Proving once again, Raggedy, that all is not necessarily coincidence. The Gershwin's were prolific, and practically every collaboration resulted in a fantastic song on or off the stage.

I'm thinking of eoe, as well, but I'm certain that she'll let us know stuff.
