You're exactly right, Raggedy. I saw the movie with Richard Burton. I recall his stoic and determined stance as the audience plummeted him with rotten vegetables. I need to find that book about the Barrymores.

My word, Raggedy and all. The name of the book about John Barrymore was Goodnight Sweet Prince. The title was taken from Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, of course.

"...Goodnight, sweet prince. May hosts of angels sing thee to thy rest..."

Johnnie Ray:

"Walking My Baby Back Home"

Gee it's great, after staying out late
Walking my baby back home
Arm in arm, over meadow and farm....
W m b b h

We stop for a while, she gives me a smile
And snuggles her head to my chest.....

We start in to pet,
And that's when I get.
Her powder all over my vest.

duh duh duh,
Duh da duh , duh, duh.
She wants to borrow my comb,
One kiss then we continue again,
Walking my baby back home.

Hey, McTag. Nat Cole did that, too.

Nat Cole. What a fantastic performer, folks. He played great piano in the
King Cole trio, and then went pop.

Anyone remember The Lettermen?

The evolution of music, and the sweet strains of all measured bars,
Whatever the time or the genre,
It's the world's stairway to the stars.

Here is a tune The Lettermen recorded.

Someday,
When I'm feeling low,
And the world is cold;
I will feel aglow just thinking of you,
And the way you look tonight.

You're lovely
With you smile so warm,
And you cheeks so soft;
There is nothing for me but to love you
Just the way you look tonight.

With each word, your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fears apart.
And your laugh that wrinkles your nose,
Touches my foolish heart.

You're lovely,
And never, never change,
Keep that breathless charm
Won't you please
Arrange it 'cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight.
The way you look tonight.

edgar, I didn't realize that the Lettermen did that. It was my dad's absolutely favorite song.

I recall the Lettermen being a spin off of The Four Freshmen, but I always have thought of this song:

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak,
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it's real.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby.
Let me love you.

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay..

and that song was juxtaposed with "Traces of Love". Very classical in the chord changes.

Well, of course, edgar.

Now listeners, here is a challenge to edgar of Texas and anyone else who would like to participate:

Who originally did Deep Night? Now don't go to the archives listeners. Just take your best guess.

Think My own Little Idaho starring River Phoenix. I swear I'm going to learn how to post a picture one of these days. God knows, edgar, you certainly know who Joaquin Phoenix is now. Laughing

Thinkin Dinah Shore.

Sweet Violets
Sweeter than the roses
Covered all over from head to toe
Covered all over with sweet violets

There once was a farmer who took a young miss
In back of the barn where he gave her a lecture
On horses and chickens and eggs
And told her that she had such beautiful
Manners that suited a girl of her charms
A girl that he wanted to take in his
Washing and ironing and then if she did
They could get married and raise lots of
Sweet violets
Sweeter than the roses
Covered all over from head to toe
Covered all over with sweet violets

The girl told the farmer that he'd better stop
And she call her father and he called a
Taxi and got there before very long
'Cause some one was doin' his little girl
Right for a change and so that's why he said
If you marry her son, you're better off single
'Cause it's always been my belief
Marriage will bring a man nothing but
Sweet Violets
Sweeter than the roses
Covered all over from head to toe
Covered all over with sweet violets

The farmer decided he wed anyway
And started in planning for his wedding
Suit which he purchased for only one buck
But then he found out he was just out of
Money and so he got left in the lurch
A standin' and waitin' in front of the
End of the story which just goes to show
All a girl wants from a man is his
Sweet Violets
Sweeter than the roses
Covered all over from head to toe
Covered all over with sweet violets

Take me to the night I'm tippin topsy turvy turning upside down
Hold me tight and whisper what you wish
For there is no one here around
Oh you may sing song me sweet smiles
Regardless of the city's careless frown
Come watch the no colors fade blazing
Into pedal sprays of Violets of Dawn
In blindful wonderments enchantments
You can lift my wings softly to fly
Your eyes are like swift fingers reaching out
Into the pockets of my night

Whirling twirling puppy warm before the flashing cloaks of darkness
Are gone
Come see the no colors fade blazing
Into pedal sprays of Violets of Dawn
Some prince charming I'll be
On Two white steeds to bring you diamond crowns
And climb your tower sleeping beauty
Before you ever know I've left the ground
You can wear a Cinderella Snowhite Alice Wonderland gown
Come watch the no colors fade blazing
Into pedal sprays of Violets of Dawn
But if I seem to wander off in dream like looks
Please let me settle slowly
It's only me just staring out at you
A seeming stranger speaking holy
I don't mean to wake you up it's only lonliness just coming on
So let the no colors fade blazing into petal sprays
Of Violets Of Dawn
Like shadows bursting into mist
Behind the echoes of this nonsense song
It's just chasing whispering trail
Of secret steps see them laughing on
There's magic in the sleepiness of waking to a childish sounding yawn
Come watch the no colors fade blazing
Into pedal sprays of Violets of Dawn

Good morning, WA2K. It seems that Dys and edgar have been entertaining us with music of a different hue; one slightly ribald, the other one blue.

If I recall correctly, listeners. Dinah Shore and Burt Reynolds were once an item.

Incidentally, all. The song to which I referred was Deep Night, and originally done by that guy with a megaphone. That sound became quite popular in the music field at one time:

<brief instrumental intro>

Deep night, stars in the sky above
Moonlight, lighting our place of love
Night winds seem to have gone to rest
Two eyes, brightly with love are gleaming
Come to my arms, my darling, my sweetheart, my own
Vow that you'll love me always, be mine alone

Deep night, whispering trees above
Kind night, bringing you nearer, dearer and dearer
Deep night, deep in the arms of love

<lengthy instrumental>

Come to my arms, my darling, my sweetheart, my own
Vow that you'll love me always, and be mine alone

Deep night, whispering trees above
Kind night, bringing you nearer, dearer and dearer
Deep night, deep in the arms of love.

Lovely song, all done in a minor key.

and edgar, I do believe the etymology of "gringo" may have orininated with the expression, "Green grow the lilacs, oh."

Your time is my time, my time is your time, there's no time .......can still hear my mother imitating Rudy. I never did learn the words - it cracked me up so when she used a kitchen funnel (I think that's what it was) for a megaphone.

Deep Night was featured in The Helen Morgan Story (Warner Bros. Pictures : 1959) Ann Blythe played Helen Morgan (Julie in the original Show Boat) and Gogi Grant dubbed her voice. So I guess Deep Night was also one of Helen Morgan's hits.

Today's birthday celebs:

1838 Henry Adams, historian/journalist (Boston, MA; died 1918)
1886 Van Wyck Brooks, literary critic/cultural historian (Plainfield, NJ; died 1963)
1903 Edgar Bergen, entertainer/ventriloquist (Chicago, IL; died 1978)
1904 George F. Kennan, historian and diplomat (Milwaukee, WI)
1920 Patty Andrews, singer (Minneapolis, MN)
1955 William Katt, actor (Los Angeles, CA)
1956 James Ingram, singer/songwriter (Akron, OH)
1957 LeVar Burton, actor (Landstuhl, West Germany)
1958 Ice-T, rap singer (Newark, NJ)
1959 John McEnroe, tennis champion (Wiesbaden, West Germany)

Anyone remember the Andrews Sisters?

Once again, Raggedy has kept us up to date on the celebs, and reminded us of the past:

Patty branched out on her own. She had a beautiful voice, really. The song that I remember was:

As we eye the blue horizon's bend,
Earth and sky appear to meet and end.
But it's merely an illusion.
Like your heart and mine,
There is no sweet conclusion

I can see,
No matter how near you'll be,
You'll never belong to me.
But I can dream Can't I?
Can't I pretend
that I'm locked in the bend of your embrace?
For dreams are just like wine,
And I am drunk with mine

I'm aware my heart is a sad affair.
There's much disillusion there,
But I can dream, Can't I

Can't I adore you although we are oceans apart?
I can't make you open your heart,
But I can dream Can't I

I remember that one, Raggdy, because I was stuck with a blind date, and to pass the very boring time, I sang that song. My friend, kept saying..

Hey, Dick. Can't you take a hint? Twisted Evil

Hey, that blind date wasn't that freckle-faced redhead that became a Minister that we both knew back then, was it?

Hee! Hee! As a matter of record, Raggedy. I never dated a red headed, freckle faced kid, but I did have a few unblind dates with a couple of future ministers.

Hey, radio audience. Anyone out there ever have a blind date experience? Tell us about it. Some were fun; some made ya run.
