I suspect, folks, that many of the performers of that ilk were into drugs of some kind. Too bad that they couldn't look further ahead. Actually, no one is to blame.

Kingston Trio:

[Intro:]
Throughout history
There've been many songs written about the eternal triangle
This next one tells the story of a Mr Grayson, a beautiful woman
And a condemned man named Tom Dooley...
When the sun rises tomorrow, Tom Dooley... must hang...

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
I met her on the mountain
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain
Stabbed her with my knife

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Hadn't a-been for Grayson
I'd a-been in Tennessee

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Down in some lonesome valley
Hangin' from a white oak tree

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die

Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die...

Thanks, hamburger. I listened to Cesaria Evora. Very different, Canada.

It is so quiet here tonight, my friends. Only the sound of a poem in my head. They do make sounds, you know.

And if you think that Donovan was the only fellow who got captivated by the altering of the mind. Think on this fellow

E.A. Robinson - Miniver Cheevy

Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn,
Grew lean while he assailed the seasons;
He wept that he was ever born,
And he had reasons.

Miniver loved the days of old
When swords were bright and steeds were prancing;
The vision of a warrior bold
Would set him dancing.

Miniver sighed for what was not,
And dreamed, and rested from his labors;
He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot,
And Priam's neighbors.

Miniver mourned the ripe renown
That made so many a name so fragrant;
He mourned Romance, now on the town,
And Art, a vagrant.

Miniver loved the Medici,
Albeit he had never seen one;
He would have sinned incessantly
Could he have been one.

Miniver cursed the commonplace
And eyed a khaki suit with loathing;
He missed the mediƦval grace
Of iron clothing.

Miniver scorned the gold he sought,
But sore annoyed was he without it;
Miniver thought, and thought, and thought,
And thought about it.

Miniver Cheevy, born too late,
Scratched his head and kept on thinking;
Miniver coughed, and called it fate,
And kept on drinking.

You have a wide variety of musical tastes! That's very good. So do I. I've given away most of my albums, and I think all my 8-tracks have been discarded. Lots of cassettes are still around, though.

I especially love the music of what some refer to as the "Rat Pack" era. Then there is the "swing" instrumental jazz. (Country swing is pretty good, too.) I think the sexiest song that Doris Day ever did was "Sentimental Journey". Her version, in my opinion, is the best. But on the whole, I try to steer clear of sad lyrics, and stick with the positive ones.

Most often, though, I listen to the instrumentals (jazz, orchestra, classical, new age).

I don't mind if a song is sad. I like some of most everything up until the mid 70s. From there, I am very selective.

Oh, how true, hamburger! I've done many (secret) wild things in my past that I would not condone, now. Surprised I would never be able to run for president!

I would say, folks, that P.S. should be happy that she can't run for president. Perhaps run for the hills.

No, no. I am NOT going to play The Sound of Music.

How about this one

- JOHNNY CASH
Trouble in mind, I'm blue

But I won't be blue always,

'Cause that sun is gonna shine in my back door someday

I'm going down to the river

I'm going top take me a rocking chair

and if the blues don't leave, I rock on away from here

Trouble in mind, I'm blue

But I won't be blue always,

'Cause that sun is gonna shine in my back door someday

Trouble in mind, that's true

I have almost lost my mind

Life ain't worth living, I feel like I could die

Trouble in mind, I'm blue

My poor heart is healing slow

I've never had such trouble in my whole life before

I'm gonna lay my head on some lonesome railroad line

and let that 2:19 special ease my troubled mind

Trouble in mind, I'm blue,

But I won't be blue always

'Cause that sun is gonna shine in my back door someday

Kingston Trio - Mark Twain
Geller/Seligson

My granddad used to tell me, "Boy, when I was just your age, I was a river pilot on a showboat called The Stage.
I'd hobnob with them southern belles and ev'ry roustabout. I'd listen to them paddle wheels and hear the leadsman shout!

Chorus:
Mark Twain, it's two fathoms deep below. Mark Twain, heave the gang plank. Start the show.
Mark Twain, play those banjos as we go down the Mississippi, 'round the Gulf of Mexico.

There were gamblers, crooks and fakers and a minstrel man who'd dance. A singin' gal, Simone Lamour, imported straight from France.
It was a floatin' palace, boy, that showboat called The Stage, and granddad was the king of it when he was just my age."

(Chorus)

The calliope is quiet now. The rudder's thick with rust. The main deck and the paddle wheels are covered high with dust.
But granddad's in his glory, still standin' on the bow. A halo 'round his pilot's cap and I can hear him now.

(Chorus)

Ah, Mark. What a fabulous writer, friends. Great memory, edgar.

Another shock:

The Grateful Dead did this: Duh!

Tom Dooley
Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

This was performed by "Bob Weir and Friends" on 17 Nov 1978 (just Weir, Garcia and Lesh - Mickey Hart joined them on stage after this song)

Chorus
Hang your head, Tom Dooley
Hang your head and cry
Killed poor Laura Foster (note 1)
And you know you're bound to die

You took her on the hillside (note 2)
And begged to be excused
You took her on the hillside
Then hid her clothes and shoes

You dug her grave four feet wide
Dug it three feet deep
Rolled the cold clay over her
And tromped it with your feet

[chorus]

Took her on the hillside
Stabbed with a knife (note 3)
Took her on the hillside
And then you took her life

[chorus]
[chorus]

This time tomorrow morning
Where do you reckon I'll be
Down in some lonesome valley
Just swinging from a white oak tree

You can take down my old violin
And play it all you please
For at this time tomorrow morning
It'll be of no use to me

[chorus]
[chorus]

Notes
(1) in some versions it is "Laurie Foster" not "Laura Foster" - and it's hard to tell which it is that Garcia and Weir sing
(2) other versions have "You left her by the roadside" for the first and third lines of this verse side instead of repeating "You took her on the hillside"
(3) in some versions the line here is "For to be your wife". Garcia mumbles something that definitely sounds as if it ends "... with her knife"

Speaking of rulers, Letty...

IF I RULED THE WORLD

From the London Musical "Pickwick"
(Leslie Bricusse / Cyril Ornadel)

Harry Secombe (London Stage Production) - 1963
Tony Bennett - 1965
Sammy Davis Jr. - 1965
Robert Goulet - 1965
Ray Charles Singers - 1965
Dionne Warwick -1965
Sarah Vaughan -1965
Bobby Vinton - 1966
James Brown - 1968
Harry Secombe (London Revival Production) - 1993

Also recorded by: Bobby Darin; Tom Jones; The Supremes;
American Theatre Singers; Michael Civisca; Enzo Stuarti;
Pete Brady Big Band; Steve Lawrence; Stephanie Nakasian;
Louise Pitre; P.J. Proby, Robert Goulet, and others.

If I ruled the world
Every day would be the first day of Spring
Every heart would have a new song to sing
And we'd sing of the joy every morning would bring

If I ruled the world
Every man would be as free as a bird
Every voice would be a voice to be heard
Take my word, we would treasure each day that occurred

My world would be a beautiful place
Where we would weave such wonderful dreams
My world would wear a smile on its face
Like the man in the moon when the moon beams

If I ruled the world
Every man would say the world was his friend
There'd be happiness that no man could end
No my friend, not if I ruled the world

Every head would be held up high
There'd be sunshine in everyone's sky
If the day ever dawned when I ruled the world

It wasn't meant for any one person to rule the world. But each of us has the power to rule our own individual world, in this manner, by a conscious choice. If the writer(s) of these lyrics knew that he could rule his own world, then all the universe would move on his behalf.

P.S. That is a marvelous song and sentiment, dear. It seems that everyone does and re-does, right?

I heard a brief promo on TV yesterday touting Michael Buble, and of all things, he was singing a Gershwin song that my husband loved:

How glad the many millions of annabelles and lillians
Would be to capture me
But you had such persistence, you wore down my resistance
I fell and it was swell

I'm your big and brave and handsome romeo
How I won you I shall never never know
It's not that you're attractive
But, oh, my heart grew active
When you came into view

I've got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and night-time give me sigh
I never had the least notion that
I could fall with so much emotion

Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share
The world will pardon my mush
'cause I have got a crush on you

Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage
That we could share
The world will pardon my mush
'cause I have got a crush, my baby, on you.

What a composer, folks, on all and in every genre.

Alvin Lee and company;

Let the sky fall
Let the sea sink
Let the earth shake
Let the sun blink
Let the universe
Go spinning free
If my darling
Ever leaves me

Let the air freeze
Let the moon cry
Let the stars go out
Let the world die
Let the eyes go blind
Let the grass turn blue
If I ever
Think of leaving you

Let our love be
With our minds free
Let our hearts beat
Let our eyes see
Let the universe
Share our love
Let me be
What you're thinking of

Ah, dys. How wonderful, cowboy. Thanks, and as one song leads to another, listeners:

A bunch of folks did this one

this version by The Bellamy Brothers. (whoever they are)

(with Hal Ketchum & Lisa Brokop )

There's a reason for the sun shiny sky
And there's a reason why I'm feelin' so high
Must be the season
When that love light shines all around us
So let that feelin' grab you deep inside
And send you reelin' where your love can't hide
And then go stealin'
Through the summer nights with your lover

Just let your love flow like a mountain stream
And let your love grow with the smallest of dreams
And let your love show
And you'll know what I mean, it's the season
Let your love fly like a bird on the wing
And let your love bind you to all living things
And let your love shine
And you'll know what I mean, that's the reason

There's a reason for the warm sweet nights
And there's a reason for the candle lights
Must be the season
When those love rites shine all around us
So let the wonder take you into space
And lay you under its loving embrace
Just feel the thunder as it warms your face
You can't hold back
Just let your love flow like a mountain stream
And let your love grow
With the smallest of dreams and let your love show
And you'll know what I mean, it's the season
Let your love fly like a bird on the wing
And let your love bind you to all living things
And let your love shine
And you'll know what I mean, that's the reason

Just let your love flow like a mountain stream
And let your love grow with the smallest of dreams
And let your love show
And you'll know what I mean, it's the season
Let your love fly like a bird on the wing
And let your love bind you to all living things
And let your love shine
And you'll know what I mean, that's the reason

another Alvin Lee;

One of these days, boy
Gonna see my baby
Gonna see my baby
Coming down the road
She'll have my pardon
Pardon in her apron, oh, lord
Gonna see the governor
Who said release my man

She's coming down the road, boy
She's coming down the road
Red dress on, yeah
She's got her red dress on
She's coming down the road, boy
She's coming down the road
Her bags down low
She's got her bags down low

One of these days, boy
Gonna see my woman
She'll have my children
Children on her knee
I'll run up to my woman
And hold her in my arms
Tears in her eyes
She says I'm glad you're free

over in music, folks were talking about chrissie hynde, and i realised how much i liked her music, so here's some of it

Time The Avenger
Pretenders

Nobody's perfect
Not even a perfect stranger
But oh what a gal
She was such a perfect stranger
And you're the best in your field
In your office with your girls
And desk and leather chair
Thought that time was on your side
But now it's time the avenger

Nobody's permanent
Everything's on loan here
Even your wife and kids
Could be gone next year
And with what you have left
You'll be forever under pressure
To support her
And a lover who looks strangely
Like time the avenger

Time, time, hear the bells chime
Over the harbor and the city
Time, one more vodka and lime
To help paralyze that tiny little tick, tick, tick, tick

Nobody's perfect
Not even a perfect gent
When your property took the a train
I wonder where your manners went
You were standing at the station
In your briefcase
Was your aftershave and underwear
Can you hear the whistle blow?
Sounds like time the avenger

Time, time, hear the bells chime
Over the harbor and the city
Time to kill another bottle of wine
To help paralyze that tiny little tick, tick, tick, tick

My City Was Gone
Pretenders

I went back to ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown
South howard had disappeared
All my favorite places
My city had been pulled down
Reduced to parking spaces
A, o, way to go ohio

Well I went back to ohio
But my family was gone
I stood on the back porch
There was nobody home
I was stunned and amazed
My childhood memories
Slowly swirled past
Like the wind through the trees
A, o, oh way to go ohio

I went back to ohio
But my pretty countryside
Had been paved down the middle
By a government that had no pride
The farms of ohio
Had been replaced by shopping malls
And muzak filled the air
From seneca to cuyahoga falls
Said, a, o, oh way to go ohio

Brass in Pocket
Pretenders

Got brass in pocket
Got bottle I'm gonna use it
Intention I feel inventive
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Got motion restrained emotion
Been driving detroit leaning
No reason just seems so pleasing
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

(chorus)

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

'cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special so special
I gotta have some of your attention give it to me

Got rhythm I can't miss a beat
Got new skank it's so reet
Got something I'm winking at you
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

(chorus)

'cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me
'cause I gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention

Give it to me

my valentine song, for whoever wants it

Your Song
Elton John

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Great songs, Letty and Dys. Oh, Ira and George Gershwin are tough to beat. Hey Dys, be careful of those whipping posts.

HE TOUCHED ME
(Ira Levin / Milton Schafer)

Barbra Streisand

Also recorded by: Tovah Feldshuh; Esther Phillips;
Rebecca Varon; Sarah Vaughan.

He touched me.
He put his hand near mine and then he touched me.

I felt a sudden tingle when he touched me,
a sparkle, a glow.
Oh, he knew it.
It wasn't accidental, no, he knew it.
He smiled and seemed to tell me so, all through it.
He knew it, I know.

He's real and the world is alive and shining
I feel such a wonderful drive toward Valentining.

He touched me.
I simply have to face the fact : he touched me.
Control myself and try to act as if I remember my name.

But he touched me.
He touched me and suddenly nothing is the same.
Cause he touched me.
He touched me and suddenly nothing... nothing... nothing... is the same.
