Hmmm. Guess edgar didn't hear me. Let's see what I can do about that, listeners:

Terry Gilkyson Lyrics - Marianne Lyrics

Marianne, Oh, Marianne, Oh won't you marry me?
We can have a bamboo hut and brandy in the tea,
Leave your fat old Nanna home,
She never will say yes.
If mamma don't know now,
She can guess, my, my, yes.

All night, all day, Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.
Even little children love Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.

When she walks along the shore,
People pause to greet,
While birds fly around her,
Little fish come to her feet.
In her heart is love, but I'm the only mortal man,
Who's allowed to kiss my Marianne,
Don't rush me.

All night, all day, Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.
Even little children love Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.

When we marry, we will have
A time you never saw,
I will be so happy,
I will kiss my mother-in-law.
Children by the dozen, in and out the bamboo hut,
One for every palm tree, and cok-y-nut, Hurry up now.

All night, all day, Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.
Even little children love Marianne,
Down by the seaside sifting sand.

Did ya hear that Texas?

I noticed that earlier, edgar. It's been a while, though. What ever happened to that entire cast, I wonder.

Well we're movin on up,
To the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Fish don't fry in the kitchen;
Beans don't burn on the grill.
Took a whole lotta tryin'
Just to get up that hill.
Now we're up in the big leagues
Gettin' our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it's you and me baby
There ain't nothin wrong with that.

Well we're movin on up,
To the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up
To the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Well, Miss Letty is fat and full so I think that I will slip into my bed and watch Monk tonight.

Cassiopeia

Feel the mattress tense beneath me
like the muscle of nonsleepy;
Feathers flexing will defeat me,
and it vexes me completely.

And the hexes heat covertly
like a slow low-flying turkey
like a Texan drying jerky
but his meaty mitts can't hurt me

With my steely will compounded
in a mighty mound that's hounded
by the SNAP my steel string sounded,
just before your snores unwound it.

And in store are dreams so daring
that the night can't stop from staring.
I'll swim sweetly as a herring
through the ether, not despairing.

Go to sleep, you stunning sky;
gently creep cunning by:
A quiet hum is amplified
by your thumb, that you suck dry.

Hundred raging waters snare the lonely sigh.
Hold your breath and clasp at Cassiopiea.

I felt like saying goodnight with an odd one.

From Letty with love

Gravel
Ani DiFranco

I heard the sound of your bike,
As your wheels hit the gravel,
Then your engine in the driveway
Cutting off
And I pushed through the screen door
And I stood out on the porch
Thinking fight, fight, fight
At all costs,
But instead I let you in,
Just like I've always done
And I sat you down and offered you a beer
And across the kitchen table
I fired several rounds,
But you were still sitting here
When the smoke cleared.
And you came crawling back
To say that you wanna
Make good in the end

And oh, oh,
Let me count the ways
That I abhor you,
And you were never a good lay
And you were never a good friend
But, oh, oh, what else can I say...
I adore you

All I need is my leather,
One t-shirt and two socks,
I'll keep my hands warm
In your pockets
And we can use the engine block,
And we'll ride out to California
With my arms around your chest,
And I'll pretend that this is real
'Cuz this is what I like best,
And you've been juggling two women
Like a stupid circus clown
Telling us both we are the one
And maybe you can keep me from ever being happy,
But you're not gonna stop me from having fun.
So let's go before I change my mind
I'll leave the luggage of all your lives behind
'Cuz I am bigger than everything that came before

And you were never very kind,
And you let me way down every time
But oh, oh, oh what can I say...
I adore you

I heard the sound of your bike,
As your wheels hit the gravel,
Then your engine in the driveway
Cutting off

32 Flavors
Ani DiFranco

Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cuz someday you're going to get hungry
And eat most of the words you just said

Both my parents taught me about good will
And I have done well by their names
Just the kindness i've lavished on strangers
Is more than I can explain
Still there's many
Who've turned out their porch lights
Just so I would think they were not home
And hid in the dark of their windows
Til I'd passed and left them alone

And god help you if you are an ugly girl
Cause too pretty is also your doom
Cuz everyone harbors a secret hatred
For the prettiest girl in the room
And god help you if you are a phoenix
And you dare to rise up from the ash
A thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
While you are just flying past

I never tried to give my life meaning
By demeaning you
And I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that i'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
No, I will never be a saint
But I will always say

Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cuz someday you might find you're starving
And eating all of the words you said

Untouchable Face
Ani DiFranco

Think I'm going for a walk now
I feel a little unsteady
I don't want nobody to follow me
'Cept maybe you
I could make you happy you know
If you weren't already
I could do a lot of things
And I do

Tell you the truth I prefer
The worst of you
Too bad you had to have a better half
She's not really my type
But I think you two are forever
And I hate to say it but
You're perfect together

So f**k you
And your untouchable face
And f**k you
For existing in the first place
And who am I
That I should be vying for your touch
And who am I
Bet you can't even tell me that much

Two-thirty in the morning
And my gas tank will be empty soon
Neon sign on the horizon
Rubbing elbows with the moon
A safe haven of sleepless
Where the deep fryer's always on
Radio is counting down
The top 20 country songs
And out on the porch the fly strip is
Waving like a flag in the wind
Y'know, I don't look forward
To seeing you again soon
You'll look like a photograph of yourself
Taken from far far away
And I won't know what to do
And I won't know what to say

Except f**k you...

I see you and i'm so perplexed
What was I thinking
What will I think of next
Where can I hide
In the back room there's a lamp
That hangs over the pool table
And when the fan is on it swings
Gently side to side
There's a changing constellation of balls as we are playing
I see orion and say nothing
The only thing I can think of saying is f**k you...

At Last
Glenn Miller & His Orchestra w/ Ray Eberle

At last, my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

At last, the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped in clover
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I've never known

You smiled, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine, at last

(I Got Spurs) Jingle Jangle Jingle
Kay Kyser & His Orchestra

I got spurs that jingle, jangle, jingle
As I go ridin' merrily along
And they sing, oh, ain't you glad you're single
And that song ain't so very far from wrong

Oh, Lillie Belle
Oh, Lillie Belle
Though I may have done some foolin'
This is why I never fell

I got spurs that jingle, jangle, jingle
As I go ridin' merrily along
And they sing, oh, ain't you glad you're single
And that song ain't so very far from wrong

Oh, Mary Ann
Oh, Mary Ann
Though we done some moonlight walkin'
This is why I up and ran

I got spurs that jingle, jangle, jingle
As I go ridin' merrily along
And they sing, oh, ain't you glad you're single
And that song ain't so very far from wrong

So I'll jingle on along

Dear John (I Sent Your Saddle Home)
John Prine

When I woke up this morning
There was a note upon my door
Saying " Don't make me no coffee, Babe
Cause I won't be back no more"

And that's all she wrote
"Dear John", I sent your saddle home"

Now Jonah got along in the belly of a whale
Daniel in the lion's den
I know a guy that didn't try to get along
And he won't get a chance again

That's all she wrote
"Dear John", I sent your saddle home"

She didn't forward no address
No she never said goodbye
All she said was "If you get blue
Just hang your little head and cry"

That's all she wrote
"Dear John", I sent your saddle home"

Now my gal's short and stubby
She's mean as she can be
If that little old gal of mine
Ever gets a hold of me

That's all she wrote
"Dear John", I fetched your saddle home"

Went down to the bank this morning
The cashier said with a grin
I'm sorry for you Little John
But your wife has done been in

That's all she wrote
"Dear John", I sent your saddle home"

That's all she wrote
"Dear John", I sent your saddle home"

Daddy daddy come and look
And see what I have found
A little way away from here
While digging in the ground

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's nothing but a picture book
They had before the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Oh daddy come and look
There's four or five Melinda girl
Inside this picture book

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
There were lots of little girls like you
Before they had the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Oh daddy hurry do
There's someone in villages
Who's all grown up like you

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
That someone is a mother
Like you had before the war

Daddy daddy come and see
Such things I've never seen
Happy faces all along
And all the ground is green

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's just the way it used to be
Before they had the war

Daddy daddy come and see
And tell me if you can
Why can't it be the way it was
Before the war began

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
The answer lies in yesterday
Before they had the war

Edgar, what a powerful song..here's a little light entertainment:

1948 - "Buttons and Bows" from The Paleface
Music and lyric by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston

East is east and west is west
And the wrong one I have chose
Let's go where I'll keep on wearin'
Those frills and flowers and buttons and bows
Rings and things and buttons and bows

Don't bury me in this prairie
Take me where the cement grows
Let's move down to some big town
Where they love a gal by the cut o' her clothes
And I'll stand out
In buttons and bows

I'll love you in buckskin
Or skirts that I've homespun
But I'll love ya' longer, stronger where
Yer friends don't tote a gun

My bones denounce the buckboard bounce
And the cactus hurts my toes
Let's vamoose where gals keep usin'
Those silks and satins and linen that shows
And I'm all yours in buttons and bows

Gimme eastern trimmin' where women are women
In high silk hose and peek-a-boo clothes
And French perfume that rocks the room
And I'm all yours in buttons and bows.

And the Olympic Games started yesterday ...

A quite popular Austrian tune, translated:

Quote:
Schifoan > Skiing
Musik/Text: H.G. Hausner, W. Ambros, V. Vane

On Friday evening I mount my skis
On my car and take off
To the Stubaital (Stubai Valley) or to Zell am See
'Cause up there on the mountains we've got super snow.

Refrain
'Cause I want to ski, ski, wow wow wow wow
Ski, 'cause skiing is the greatest thing
That I can imagine ('understand')

In the morning I'm the first one to go up
So I don't have to wait so long to go up.
Up in the ski chalet I buy myself a Jägertee (hunter's tea)
'Cause it's just such a tea that makes the snow really nice.

'Cause I want to ski...

And when the snow flies (dusts up) and when the sun shines
Then I have total happiness within me
I stand on the peak, look down into the valley;
Everyone's happy, everyone feels good

And just wants to ski...

On Sunday evening I mount my skis
On my car, but then it comes over me,
And I look up once again and think "But why"
I'm not driving home yet, I'll stay on Monday, too,
Skiing...

- English translation by Hyde Flippo

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

Hey, dj. Thanks for the Ani tunes. My daughter loves her, and has been to one of her concerts. (I think it was she). Also the John Prine melody was nice.

My goodness, folks. This must be cowboy day, and thanks to edgar and Diane for adding to the WA2K round up.

Walter has just reminded our listeners that the Olympics have begun and the Austrian song was perfect. Thanks, Germany.

Incidentally, folks. From what writer cometh the phrase:

East is East and West is West. Don't look it up, now.

Ah, the hunter of the East is rising over the ocean, and the glow is filtering through our studio blinds. Let us hope that this day holds promise of good things to come.

Good morning.

On this day in history:

The II Olympic Winter Games were held in 1928 in Sankt-Moritz, Switzerland.

The 1928 Games were the first true Winter Olympics, held on its own, and not in conjunction with a Summer Olympics. The preceding 1924 Winter Olympics were retroactively renamed into Winter Olympics. They were actually part of the 1924 Summer Olympics. All preceding Winter Events of the Olympic Games were the winter sports part of the schedule of the Summer Games, and not as a separate Winter Games. These games also replaced the now redundant Nordic Games, that were held quadrennially since early in the century. (Sonja Henie won her first Gold Medal in women's figure skating.)

And on this day in 1941, the first Gold record was presented to Glenn Miller for "Chattanooga Choo Choo".

And a Happy 70th Birthday to:

Well, my goodness, folks. There's our Raggedy with a precis concerning the original Olympics and a happy birthday to Burt. Talk about a centerfold. WOW! Razz Thanks, PA!

Well, no one has called in or written about the quote, so we'll just let her sit there a while.

Valentine's Day is approaching, so let's play a really nice jazz ballad for our dear couples out there:

My Funny Valentine

My funny Valentine, sweet comic Valentine,
you make me smile with my heart.
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable.
Yet, you're my favorite work of art.
Is your figure less than Greek ?
Is your mouth a little weak ?
When you open it to speak, are you smart ?
But don't change a hair for me, not if you care for me.
Stay little Valentine, stay! Each day is Valentine's day.
Is your figure less than Greek ? Is your mouth a little weak ?
When you open it to speak, are you smart ?
But please, don't change a hair for me, not if you care for me.
Stay little Valentine, stay! Each day is Valentine's day.

and so you do, Raggedy. Why am I not surprised. Kipling was a great writer, and it's a pity that simply because of one poem, many places banned his excellent literature.

It seems that cultures still have a lot to learn about the setting event, right folks?

The Appeal
If I have given you delight
By aught that I have done,
Let me lie quiet in that night
Which shall be yours anon:

And for the little, little, span
The dead are born in mind,
Seek not to question other than
The books I leave behind.

Lovely, poem.
