I don't know why, listeners, but I was reminded of this song by our Calamity Jane:

The Kerry Dance

Chorus
Oh, the days of the Kerry dancing
Oh, the ring of the piper's tune
Oh, for one of those hours of gladness
Gone, alas, like our youth, too soon!
When the boys began to gather
In the glen of a summer's night
And the Kerry piper's tuning
Made us long with wild delight!
Oh, to think of it
Oh, to dream of it
Fills my heart with tears!

Chorus

Was there ever a sweeter Colleen
In the dance than Eily More
Or a prouder lad than Thady
As he boldly took the floor.

Lads and lasses to your places
Up the middle and down again
Ah, the merry hearted laughter
Ringing through the happy glen!
Oh, to think of it
Oh, to dream of it
Fills my heart with tears!

Chorus

Time goes on, and the happy years are dead
And one by one the merry hearts are fled
Silent now is the wild and lonely glen
Where the bright glad laugh will echo ne'er again
Only dreaming of days gone by in my heart I hear.

Loving voices of old companions
Stealing out of the past once more
And the sound of the dear old music
Soft and sweet as in days of yore.

When the boys began to gather
In the glen of a summer's night
And the Kerry piper's tuning
Made us long with wild delight!
Oh, to think of it
Oh, to dream of it
Fills my heart with tears!

Chorus

Should you like to listen:

Birthday Song

The birthday candles now we'll light,
One for every year.
Then you make a wish and blow them out,
Our birthday boy so dear.

Canada, why did you make me laugh? I wanted to be sad and nostalgic tonight. Didn't you listen to that plaintive song of the Kerry Dancers?

Incidentally, the picture that I posted earlier is on the ceiling of The House of Mirrors, a progression from Bob's Sun King.

What war treaty was signed there?

A clue:

Lyrics:
Verse 1:
I can picture the boys "over there,"
Making plenty of noise, "over there,"
And if I'm not wrong,
It won't be long,
Ere a certain song will fill the air;
It's all very clear,
The time's drawing near,
When they'll be marching down to the pier, singing:

Chorus:
"Goodbye France,
We'd love to linger longer, but we must go home;
Folks are waiting to welcome us across the foam;
We were glad to stand side by side with you,
Mighty proud to have died with you;
So goodbye France,
You'll never be forgotten by the U.S.A."

Verse 2:
They are waiting for one happy day,
When the word comes to start on their way;
With a tear-dimmed eye, They'll say 'goodbye'
But their hearts will cry, 'Hip-hip hooray!'
The friends that they made,
Will wish that they stayed,
As they start on their homeward parade, singing:

(Repeat Chorus)

Beautiful, edgar. "....wear your love like heaven...." Thanks, Texas.

Well,dj. You may be speechless, but I'm not songless. (I know, I stole it from you)

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
Available on the album Elton John

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Are we having fun yet? Laughing

letty : here are some "gandy dancers" for you .
not exactly sure of the origin of the name, except that they are driving those handcarts. perhaps the name has to do with having to set the car on and pull it off the rails frequently when a train approached, i.e. they had to be fast on their feet - dancers ? hbg

http://www.hobbylinc.com/gr/bac/bac96201.jpg

i believe the name goes back to the days when the transcontinental railroads were being built.

Well, thanks, hamburger. Those are called hand cars as well. If you saw O Brother Where Art Thou, the blind guy was a part of the Odyssey parallel, and he was pumping a single hand car.

Well, folks. I am very tired as I got little sleep last evening. Please do a cyber back rub for me.

Goodnight, my friends.

From Letty with love.

I Wonder When I'll Get To Be Called A Man
Big Bill Broonzy

When I was born into this world, this is what happened to me
I was never called a man, and now I'm fifty-three
I wonder when,
I wonder when,
I wonder when will I get to be called a man
Do I have to wait till I get ninety-three?

When Uncle Sam called me, I know'ed I'd be called a real McCoy
But I got none of this, they just called me soldier boy
I wonder when,
I wonder when,
I wonder when will I get to be called a man
Do I have to wait till I get ninety-three?

When I got back from overseas, that night we had a ball
Next day I met the old boss, he said "Boy get you some overalls"
I wonder when,
I wonder when,
I wonder when will I get to be called a man
Do I have to wait till I get ninety-three?

I've worked on the levee camps, and axer gangs too
Black man's a boy, don't care what he can do
I wonder when,
I wonder when,
I wonder when will I get to be called a man
Do I have to wait till I get ninety-three?

They said I was uneducated, my clothes were dirty and torn
Now I've got a little education, but I'm still a boy right on
I wonder when,
I wonder when,
I wonder when will I get to be called a man
Do I have to wait till I get ninety-three?

Good morning WA2K radio fans and contributors.

Imur, I must say that picture did the trick for Letty. Totally delightful both in sight and in feel, Irish. It is so nice to wake up with a smile. Love it!

Strange, edgar. That song reminds me of a short but sad observation by Richard Wright called "Almost a Man." I'll have to check that out folks. Thanks, Texas.

Incidentally, no one has answered the question about mirrors, yet; not even McTag or the birthday boy.

Now to get started with the best early morning beverage that I know. <smile>

Well, there's our Raggedy, folks. Hmmmm. our PA picture person in residence here on our radio has just shown us two celebs, and I'm afraid Letty is confounded. One rather resembles someone once married to Roald Dahl, but I can't be sure.

and while we await answers, listeners, how about a little Mexican music from James Taylor:

Oh, Mexico
It sounds so simple I just got to go
The sun's so hot I forgot to go home
Guess I'll have to go now

"Americano" got the sleepy eye
But his body's still shaking like a live wire
Sleepy "SeƱorita" with the eyes on fire

Oh, Mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low
Moon's so bright like to light up the night
Make everything all right

Baby's hungry and the money's all gone
The folks back home don't want to talk on the phone
She gets a long letter, sends back a postcard; times are hard

Oh, down in Mexico
I never really been so I don't really know
Oh, Mexico
I guess I'll have to go

Oh, Mexico
I never really been but I'd sure like to go
Oh, Mexico
I guess I'll have to go now

.................The Treaty of Versailles, Letty.

Among other people who were born on this day, I share it with:

George Burns, comedian

Deforrest Kelley, Doctor McCoy on Tv's original "Star Trek" , and

Edwin "Buzz Aldrin, Astronaut.

Thanks for all your birthday wishes, folks.

I would now like to play one of my favourite songs, from my favourite band.................

FAR AWAY EYES (Rolling Stones)

I was driving home early sunday morning through bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, you know you always have the
Lord by your side

And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she'd be off
She'd be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
And you can't harmonize
Find a girl with far away
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of jesus
Located somewhere in los angeles, california
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer with a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Thanks, McT. I'm startin' to get in the party mood.....

Here's one to start things off....

I'M INTO SOMETHING GOOD. (Herman's Hermits)

Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine
There's somethin' special on my mind
Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood, whoa yeah
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
She's the kind of girl who's not too shy
And I can tell I'm her kind of guy
She danced close to me like I hoped she would
(she danced with me like I hoped she would)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
We only danced for a minute or two
But then she stuck close to me the whole night through
Can I be fallin' in love
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of
She's everthing I've been dreamin' of
I walked her home and she held my hand
I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
(Somethin' tells me I'm into somethin', ahhh)
I walked her home and she held my hand
I knew it couldn't be just a one-night stand
So I asked to see her next week and she told me I could
(I asked to see her and she told me I could)
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, oh yeah, something good
(somethin' tells me I'm into somethin')
To something good, something good, something good

HI HO SILVER LINING
Jeff Beck

You're everywhere and nowhere, baby,
that's where you're at
Going down the bumpy hillside in your hippie hat
Flying across the country and getting fat
Saying everything is groovy
when your tires are flat

And it's hi-ho silver lining
anywhere you go now, baby
I see your sun is shining but I will make a fuss
Though it's obvious

Flattering your peasuit, baby,
they're waving at me
Anything you want is yours now,
only nothing's for free
Life's a-gonna get you someday,
just wait and see
So put up your beach umbrella
while you're watching TV

And it's hi-ho silver lining
anywhere you go, well, baby
I see your sun is shining but I will make a fuss
Though it's obvious...............
