That's it, Eva. You're gettin as good as the turtle and dj, Venus. Thanks, honey.

I was trying to remember a child's song about My little Buckaroo. My daddy was a real cowboy, and although my memories may be part of my oldest sister's, I can hear that melody in my head.

How about this one by Chris Isaak:

I do hope our Mahealani is a lady.

Sniff, sniff (wiping a sentimental tear from her eye) Yes, Mahealani is a lady (well, most of the time).

Mahalo! Nice pick, Letty. However, our boy Chris Isaak has plagiarized Harry Owen's song to death! He co-wrote it with Bing Crosby in 1937 (Harry Owens was a well-known composer/bandleader...The Royal Hawaiian Band, I think...in the '30s and '40s and composed some of the most memorable popular songs in the Islands of the era.) Here is his original composition:

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
Nature fashioned roses kissed with dew
And then she placed them in a bower
It was the start of you.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
I dreamed of paradise for two.
You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly Flower
Tropic skies are jealous as they shine
I think they're jealous of your blue eyes
Jealous because you're mine.

Sweet Leilani, Heavenly flower
I dreamed of paradise for two.
You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

You are my paradise completed.
You are my dream come true.

Hmmm...I feel a hula comin' on....

My mother used to sing this one to me. Could you be thinking of the same one, Letty?

Close your sleepy eyes,
My little Buckaroo.
While the light of the western skies,
Is shinin' down on you.
Don't you know it's time for bed,
Another day is through.
So go to sleep,
My little Buckaroo.

Don't you realize,
My little Buckaroo,
That it was from a little acorn,
That the Oak tree grew?
And remember that your dad,
Was once a kid like you.
So go to sleep,
My little Buckaroo.

Soon you're gonna ride the range,
Like grown up cowboys do.
Now it's time that you were roundin' up,
A dream or two.
So go to sleep,
My little Buckaroo.

Version 2
Close your sleepy eyes,
My little Buckaroo,
While the light of the western skies
Is shining down on you.
Don't you know it's time for bed,
Another day is through
So go to sleep,
My little Buckaroo.

Oo, oo, oo, oo,
Soon you're gonna ride the range
Like grown up cowboys do
Now it's time that you were rounding
Up a dream or two
So go to sleep,
My little Buckaroo.

She sang both versions. Laughing

Song and Dance Routine
(from the CD Stark Raving Songs)

I used to be a gentle child
But I grew up into a batman
But I drank milk instead of blood
And I turned into a catman
All the dogs were after me
So I became the phantom
And then one day I laid an egg
I turned into a bantam
All I ever got from Farmer Brown
Was the screaming heebeegeebees
So I moved to New York City and
I got a job singing songs at CBGBs.

Do a song and dance routine
Do anything but keep the act clean
Do the jinga jinga do the jowny jown
Do anything but don't pull your pants down.

I used to be a seaman once
But I got sick of all the water
And so I moved onto dry land
Like every sailor ought to
On the land I met a girl
The rich landowner's daughter
And she was always kissing frogs
And this is how I caught her:
I turned myself into a frog
Dressed up like a hotel porter
She kissed me and the prince I became
Took out his purse and bought her.

Do a song and dance routine
Do anything but keep the act clean
Do the boogey boogey, do the boney bone
Do anything but don't bite the microphone.

I used to sing about the world
But it became so tiring
So then I sang instruction songs
On how to fix the wiring
I sabotaged a power plant
I ran away to write a poetry
But the landowner put a spell on me
And I turned into Gene Autrey
I rode across the movie screen
In all the cowboy capers
And my advice to Indians is
Don't see the movies; read the papers.

Do a song and dance routine
Do anything but keep the act clean
Do the pingy pongy, Do the pouty pout
Do anything but don't pull your poetry out.

Guess who just got back today?
Those wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven't changed, haven't much to say
But man, I still think those cats are great

They were asking if you were around
How you was, where you could be found
I told them you were living downtown
Driving all the old men crazy

The boys are back in town

You know the chick that used to dance a lot
Every night she'd be on the floor shaking what she'd got
Man when I tell you she was cool, she was red hot
I mean she was steaming

That night over at Johnny's place
Well this chick got up and she slapped Johnny's face
Man we just fell about the place
If that chick don't want to know, forget her

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Dino's bar and grill
The drink will flow and blood will spill
If the boys want to fight, you'd better let them

That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song
The nights are getting warmer, it won't be long
It won't be long till summer comes
Now that the boys are here again

The boys are back in town

Interestingly, A2K was down nearly to the minute exactly the time, I've been out. Laughing

diane : on the "reeperbahn" no viagra is needed in the water !

some 70 years ago hans albers started to sing the praises of the reeperbahn, where the action starts any time after 12:30 midnight .

his song is called :
"auf der reeperbahn nachts um halb eins"
("on the reeperbahn at night at half to one")

it's a song about a sailor who has just received his pay for the last trip and is now ready to spend it with all the girls willing to help him having a good time ... he wouldn't have had much trouble finding helpmates ... so that by next morning he would be broke and ready to sign on again for another voyage . such is the sailor's life !

Well, my goodness, listeners. We're back and it was Walter's magic that did it.

Diane, that is one funny song. Thanks, honey. I'll have to go get me a drink of water now. <smile>

Raggedy, that's the song, alright, but it seems to me, PA, that there was one line that said, "...don't you know that Buffalo Bill was once a kid like you...". thanks, gal.

Mahealani, Fantastic. Thanks for the background and the original lyrics. My word. Grass skirts and lei's and brown supple bodies.

We need to thank our diligent maintenance crew, folks.

To the mods and the way they do the hu-a-la

1588 John Winthrop was born on January 12, 1588

For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world.

1729 Edmund Burke was born on January 12, 1729
British statesman and philosopher, 1729-1797
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

1876 Jack London was born on January 12, 1876
American short-story writer and novelist whose works deal romantically with elemental struggles for survival. One of the most extensively translated of American authors. 1876-1916
I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.
from Jack London.

If Raggedy can't make it today. I shall be back later with pictures, listeners.

perhaps you'll enjoy a picture of hans albers. he was considered quite a heartthrob in the 30''s, 40's and 50's. he quite often played the role of a sailor, but i believe he never was a sailor.
one of his first film engagements was in the original "the blue angel" with marlene dietrich - the late 1920's , i believe. we recently borrowed a copy (black-and-white, of course) from the library and it was interesting to see with how little dialogue a powerful story could be portrayed. we thought it was quite an outstanding social commentary of the times . hbg

Wow! , hamburger. We appreciate seeing something different, Canada. The old time stars are very provocative to me. Thanks for the chance to do some more research.

Jack London is one of my favorite authors, especially his short story,"To Build a Fire", because his one very brief statement about the main character-- "...the man had no imagination..."--characterizes so many of us in the world.
