Good morning, WA2K radio fans and contributors.

First, let me thank bio Bob for his background information. Often we read books and never think about the person behind the pen. I, for one, was surprised at H.G. Welles' checkered life. As for Stephen King, his books were all right to read up to a point, and he has a marvelous story-telling ability, but as I have observed before, his endings were never literarily sound. Our Bob will be gone for the next few days, and we will miss him, but wanted to let our listeners know that all is well and not to worry.

Morning song:

Something Beautiful

You can't manufacture a miracle
The silence was pitiful that day.
A love is getting too cynical
Passion's just physical these days
You analyze everyone you meet
But get no sign, love ain't kind
every night you admit defeat
and cry yourself blind

[Chorus]
If you can't wake up in the morning
Cause your bed lies vacant at night
If you're lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Can't control it, try as you might
May you find that love that won't leave you
May you find it by the end of the day
You won't be lost, hurt, tired and lonely
Something beautiful will come your way

The DJ said on the radio
Life should be stereo, each day
In the past you cast the unsuitable
Instead of some kind of beautiful, you just couldn't wait
All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul no, no, no
Forgot the time feeling petrified, when they lived alone

[Repeat chorus]

Some kind of beautiful (will come your way)
[x4]

All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul no no no
Forgot the time feeling petrified
When they lived alone

Listeners, it seems that our edgar will be off for a while.

Let's hope that Rita dissipates and condenses into an atmospheric mist.

Since I first heard of Hurricane Rita, this song has been playing inside my brain. My thoughts are with all of those people and fellow A2K'ers, who will be braving her storm. Here's hoping that Rita doesn't get any fiercer than this.

Lovely Rita

Lovely Rita meter maid
nothing can come between us
When it gets dark I tow your heart away

Standing by a parking meter
when I caught a glimpse of Rita
Filling in a ticket in her little white book
In a cap she looked much older
And the bag across her shoulder
Made her look a little like a military man

Lovely Rita meter maid
may I inquire discreetly
When are you free to take some tea with me

Took her out and tried to win her
had a laugh and over dinner
Told her I would really like to see her again
Got the bill and Rita paid it
Took her home and nearly made it
Sitting on a sofa with a sister or two

Lovely Rita meter maid
where would I be without you
give us a wink and make me think of you

Lovely meter maid
Rita meter maid
oh, Lovely Rita meter, meter maid

Good morning, Raggedy. Thanks for the celeb updates, and for a moment, I thought that I was looking at a photo of Dustin Hoffman. I have learned a great deal about Leonard Cohen and his music here on our little radio, and I do hope our listeners have as well.

Well, colorbook. You thought of a song, I thought of a poem. Anyone surprised?

La Belle Dame Sans Merci

Ballad.

I.

O WHAT can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
Alone and palely loitering?
The sedge has wither'd from the lake,
And no birds sing.

II.

O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms!
So haggard and so woe-begone?
The squirrel's granary is full,
And the harvest's done.

III.

I see a lily on thy brow
With anguish moist and fever dew,
And on thy cheeks a fading rose
Fast withereth too.

IV.

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful - a faery's child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.

V.

I made a garland for her head,
And bracelets too, and fragrant zone;
She look'd at me as she did love,
And made sweet moan.

VI.

I set her on my pacing steed,
And nothing else saw all day long,
For sidelong would she bend, and sing
A faery's song.

VII.

She found me roots of relish sweet,
And honey wild, and manna dew,
And sure in language strange she said -
«I love thee true.»

VIII.

She took me to her elfin grot,
And there she wept, and sigh'd fill sore,
And there I shut her wild wild eyes
With kisses four.

IX.

And there she lulled me asleep,
And there I dream'd - Ah! woe betide!
The latest dream I ever dream'd
On the cold hill's side.

X.

I saw pale kings and princes too,
Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
They cried - «La Belle Dame sans Merci
Hath thee in thrall!»

XI.

I saw their starved lips in the gloam,
With horrid warning gaped wide,
And I awoke and found me here,
On the cold hill's side.

XII.

And this is why I sojourn here,
Alone and palely loitering,
Though the sedge is wither'd from the lake,
And no birds sing.

I have always enjoyed Sara Teasdale, and the following is so true of many of us:

Thought for Today: ``I found more joy in sorrow / Than you could find in joy.'' - Sara Teasdale, American author and poet (1884-1933).

10,000 Maniacs - Across The Fields

Well they left then in the morning,
a hundred pairs of wings
in the light moved together
in the colors of the morning
I looked to the clouds
in the cirrus sky and they'd gone.

Across the marshes,
across the fields below.
I fell through the vines
and I hoped they would catch me below.

If only to take me with them there,
tell me the part that shines
in your heart on the wind.

And the reeds blew in the morning.
Take me along to the places
you've gone when my eyes looked away.
Tell me the song that you sing
in the trees in the dawning.
Tell me the part that shines
in your heart and the rays of love forever,
please take me there.

Alone and palely loitering, I reflected-

They tried to tell us we're too young, too young to really be in love. They say that love's a word, a word we've only heard, and can't begin to know the meaning of. And yet, we're not too young to know, our love will last as years may go; and then, one day, they may recall- we were not too young at all.

Well, listeners, there's our McTag. We missed you, Brit. Don't you love that poem and the choice of words? Who was this woman without mercy, do you suppose.

"...and yet, someday they might recall,
We were not too young at all. "

"La belle dame sans merci" might be code for everywoman, or rather a portrayal of an unattainable, remote figure, an idealised icon of "woman" with femininity somehow removed, a fobidding, cold, nightmarish figure, a sorceress.

Well that was a bit contradictory, wasn't it, listeners.

They asked me how I knew my true love was true. I of course replied, something here inside cannot be denied. So I chaffed them, and I gaily laughed to think they could doubt my love. But today, my love has flown away; I am without my love. Now, laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide- you must realise, when the lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes.

The lady without mercy is contradictory, Taggers. That's why she is without mercy and why the knight paley loitered.

Ah, I like that "Smoke Gets in your Eyes":

And here is an odd one by special request:

Singing For The Lonely

Singing for the lonely
You're not the only ones who feel this
So scared of what we're doing
All the time

Here comes wasted head-space
Paranoia
Anger, misplaced feelings
Leave me nowhere
All the time

I don't wake up early every morning
'Cause the more I sleep the less I have to say
Scared of you always thinking that I'm boring
Stop me yawning my life away

Tender young confusion
Send black mariah for blue delusions
Lays heavy oh so heavy
On my mind

I'm so sick of people's expectations
Leaves me tired all the time
If your home's full of useless aggravation
Then don't bring it to mine

I seem to spend my life
Just waiting for the chorus
'Cause the verse is never nearly
Good enough

The hooligan half of me
That steals from Woolworths
While the other lives for love

I'm so sick of people's expectations
Leaves me tired all the time
If your home's full of worthless aggravation
Then don't bring it to mine

Singing for the lonely
We're not the only ones who feel this
So scared of what I'm doing
All the time

Singing for the Lonely
We're not the only ones who feel this
Scared of what we're doing
All the time

You mean like a kind of mediaeval version of "Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen"? Wink

Laughing but of course, McTag. Women love men with mystique and indifferent demeanor, to a point, that is, right listeners?

The Group Who Couldn't Say
Grandaddy

Doo doo doo dit doo, doo doo doo dit doo

The tale I'm gonna tell
Is about the group who couldn't say
Together they discovered with each other the perfection of an outdoor day

They had won some kinda prize
For selling way more stuff than the other guys
They were the shrewdest unit-movers
So their bosses got 'em tours of the countryside

Doo doo doo dit doo, doo doo doo dit doo

Holly saw a certain bird
But she couldn't work up any words
She kinda lost her shoes and lost her mind
And smashed her phone upon a fallen pine

And Darryl couldn't talk at all
He wondered how the trees had grown to be so tall
He calculated all the height and width and density
For insurance purposes

And at the desktop there's crying sounds
For all the projects due
And no one else is around
And the sprinklers that come on at 3 am
Sound like crowds of people asking
"Are you happy what you're doing?"

Ah ah ah

And at the desktop there's crying sounds
For all the projects due
And noone else is around
And the sprinklers that come on at 3 am
Sound like crowds of people asking
"Are you happy what you're doing?"

Becky wondered why
She'd never noticed dragonflies
Her drag and click had never yielded
Anything as perfect as a dragonfly

And then the supervisor stood
Right in the creek and it felt really good
And that's about the time he finally had realised the importance of this day
And that's about the time he realised
That he was with the group who couldn't say
Hey hey
And they felt so good it hurt forget the words
They were the group who couldn't say

dj, That song says so much. It's sad, really how we lose touch. Yes, Canada, the group who couldn't say because they had forgorgotten how to say things of a free nature.

Along the Road
I walked a mile with Pleasure;
She chattered all the way.
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow
And ne'er a word said she;
But oh, the things I learned from her
When Sorrow walked with me!

Bulldog Skin
Guided By Voices

I played the part
I played the start
I made a table out of clay
I placed my hands upon the plans
I waited for a proud display
I played around
I heard the sound of certain trouble on the way

I got bulldog skin

I took a car
I drove it far
I dug the quality of steel
I crashed my nerve
I made it swerve
I made it back - was no big deal
I tasted blood
A date with scud
And now I don't know how to feel

I got bulldog skin

dj, you find the most unusual songs to play at this time of night.

And, Canada. I am guided by voices as well. <smile>

They seem to be saying:

Letty, your bed is waiting. Come and climb under and rest your mind.

So, listeners. This will be my goodnight song, along with a prayer for those in the path of Rita:

Enrique Iglesias - Bailamos

Esta Noche Bailamos
De Noite - da mi vida
Quedate conmigo

Tonight we dance
I leave my life in your hands
We take the floor
Nothing is forbidden anymore

Don't let the world in outside
Don't let a moment go by
Nothing can stop us tonight

Chorus
Bailamos - let the rhythm take you over Bailamos
Te quiero amor mio - Bailamos
Wanna live this night forever - bailamos
Te quiero amor mio - Te quiero

Tonight I'm yours
We can make it happen I'm so sure
I won't let it go
There is something I think you should know

I won't be leaving your side
We're going to dance through the night
I want to reach for the stars.

Chorus
Bailamos - let the rhythm take you over Bailamos
Te quiero amor mio - Bailamos
Wanna live this night forever - Bailamos
Te quiero amor mio - Te quiero

Tonight we dance
Like no tomorrow
If you will stay with me
Te quiero mi amor

Quidate conmigo
esta noche - bailamos

Bailamos - let the rhythm take you over Bailamos
Te quiero amor mio - Bailamos
Wanna live this night forever - Bailamos
Te quiero amor mio Bailamos
Como te quiero
Como te quiero
Como te quiero

Goodnight, dear friends.

From Letty with love

I Am A Scientist
Guided By Voices

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
All of my impurities and evils yet unknown
I am a journalist - I write to you to show you I am an incurable
and nothing else behaves like me

And i know what's right
But i'm losing sight
Of the clues for which i search and choose to abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a pharmacist
Prescriptions i will fill you
Potions, pills and medicines
To ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul
I shoot myself with rock and roll
The hole i dig is bottomless
But nothing else can set me free

And i know what's right
But I'm losing sight
Of the clues for which i search and choose to abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a scientist - I seek to understand me
I am an incurable and nothing else behaves like me

Everything is right - Everything works out right
Everything fades from sight
Because that's all right with me
