Funny, George. Curlers? Does any woman sleep with curlers in her hair in today's world?

Well, folks. We must go through the process of awaiting our tax forms here in America. I think I'll try doing my own this year. We would all be interested to know how the system works in other countries. Let us hear from you folks.

Get you a copper kettle, get you a copper coil
Fill it with new made corn mash and never more you'll toil
You'll just lay there by the juniper while the moon is bright
Watch them just a-filling in the pale moonlight.

Build you a fire with hickory, hickory, ash and oak
Don't use no green or rotten wood, they'll get you by the smoke
You'll just lay there by the juniper while the moon is bright
Watch them just a-filling in the pale moonlight.

My daddy he made whiskey, my granddaddy he did too
We ain't paid no whiskey tax since 1792
You'll just lay there by the juniper while the moon is bright
Watch them just a-filling in the pale moonlight.

I'm troubled, I'm troubled
I'm troubled in mind
If trouble don't kill me
Lord I'll live a long time

Courting is pleasure
And parting is grief
But a false hearted lover
Is worse than a thief

For a thief will just rob you
And take what you crave
But a false hearted lover
Will lead you to the grave

And the grave will decay you
And turn you to dust
Not one girl in a hundred
That a poor boy can trust

They'll hug and kiss you
And tell you more lies
Than the cross ties on a railroad
Or the stars in the sky

I'm going to Georgia
I'm going to Rome
I'm going to Georgia
Gonna make it my home

I'm gonna build me a cabin
On the mountain so high
So the world bird and the turtle dove
Will hear my sad cry

Wow, dys. Moonshine and moolightmaddness. That second song sounded sooooo familiar.

Listeners, dys just reminded me of two old songs that my sister and I used to sing together, and they blended perfectly:

"Have I stayed Away to Long" and "Love oh Love oh Careless Love"

I'll be back later with both sets of lyrics, plus a companion piece called "Trouble in Mind."

Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All these things that don't change, Come what may.

But our good times are all gone,
And I'm bound for moving on.
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

Think I'll go out to Alberta,
Weather's good there in the fall.
Got some friends that I can go to working for,

Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I asked you one more time,
But we've been through that a hundred times or more.

If I get there before the snow flies,
And if things are going good,
You could meet me if I send you down the fare.

But if you wait until it's winter,
It will be no good
'Cause that wind sure can blow way out there.

Oh my gosh. "Have I Stayed Away Too Long". I forgot all about that one. "Have all of my dreams gone wrong. If I came home tonight would that lovelight still be shining or have I stayed away too long?" But, who did that one? I hear a crooner. Was it Bing?

Lots of celebrities born this January 6th:

George, I like that melody. From whence cameth it?

Raggedy, my sister always led me to believe that "Have I Stayed Away too Long" was a country song.

Have I Stayed Away
Too Long ?

Have I stayed away too long?
Have I stayed away too long?
If I came home tonight, would you still be my darlin' ?
Or, have I stayed away too long?

The love light that shone so strong
Sweet love light that shone so strong
If I came home tonight, would that same light be shinin' ?
Or, have I stayed away too long?

I'm just outside of town
I'll soon be at your door
But maybe I'd be wrong to hurry there
I'd best keep out of town, and worry you no more
For, maybe someone else has made you care

Have all of my dreams gone wrong?
My beautiful dreams gone wrong?
If I came home tonight, would you still be my darlin' ?
Or, have I stayed away too long?

I'd best keep out of town, and worry you no more
For, maybe someone else has made you care

Have all of my dreams gone wrong?
My beautiful dreams gone wrong?
If I came home tonight, would you still be my darlin' ?
Or, have I stayed away too long?

Stayed away too long?

Words and Music by Frank Loesser, 1943

and the crooner was Perry Como for this particular version.

My word, Danny Thomas. It seems to me, listeners, that Marlo Thomas has a role in some TV show, but I can't remember which.

Gonna try and do this one from memory.

Love oh love oh careless love
Love oh love oh can it be,
Love oh love oh careless love,
To love someone who don't love me.

Once I wore my apron down.
Once I wore my apron down.
Once I wore my apron down.
Now the strings, they won't go round.

(repeat chorus)

Brook Benton, listeners? Quite a surprise.

CARELESS LOVE
Brook Benton

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Oh it's love, oh love, oh careless love
You see what careless love has done.

Once I wore my apron low
Once I wore my apron low
Oh it's once I wore my apron low,
You'd follow me through rain and snow.

Now I wear my apron high
Now I wear my apron high
Oh it's now I wear my apron high,
You'll see my door and pass it by.

I cried last night and the night before,
I cried last night and the night before,
Oh I cried last night and the night before,
Going to cry tonight and cry no more.

Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Love, oh love, oh careless love,
Oh it's love, oh love, oh careless love
You see what careless love has done.

Hmmmm. Guess I didn't do too badly, given the fact that I no longer wear aprons. Razz

Abilene, Abilene
Prettiest town I've ever seen
Women there don't treat you mean
In Abilene, my Abilene

.............

I'm gonna stand on the corner
Tenth Street and Vine
Yeah, I'm gonna stand on the corner
Of 10th St and Vine
With my Kansas City baby and a bottle of Kansas City wine....

..........

The Union Stockyard, Chicago is
The Wrigley Building, Chicago is
One town that won't let you down-
It's...my kind of town!

Oooh, I just read that Perry Como introduced Have I Stayed Away Too Long in 1943. I always thought it was a WWII song. But, I see that it was next picked up by Tex Grande and His Range Riders. So, take your pick. (lol)

Wow! McTag. Abilene? Wasn't the man who did that George Hamilton?(not Hamilton IV). Hey, buddy. I did Kansas City. That is one swinging tune.

Listeners, I do believe that McTag is doing songs from different states. How about one from Manchester.

Whoops I tuned in during Poets Corner. I just wanted to say I dig that stuff, man.

George Shearing now, he was a genius player. I believe he was the piano player on "Let there Be Love" by Nat King Cole, though of course Nat was well capable of playing too. George had a lovely style and one I admire greatly.
In that intro for "Let There Be You" I never unerstood why there is a key change just before the singer starts to sing; anyone listening have any ideas about that?

Heartily agree about Shearing. I have found a reverse racism in jazz that isn't really negative, but causes good white players to be umderappreciated.
McTag, thanks for the heads up about"Let There Be You"...it's the kind of thing I thrive for...I'll get right to work on it.

I love Brook Benton too, what a voice he had. Is he still with us? I remember Sam Costa on our radio over here, he had a Saturday show and he often played Brook's songs. The Boll Weevil Song, remember that? And he made a great job of "Endlessly"

I bet, however, that "Careless Love" has its origins in England, 17th C. or so at a guess. "Once I wore my apron low"? Where would a line like that come from? Old custom, I suppose, to indicate an unmarried woman.

You know something, McTag? I'll bet that song originally came from England, too. Most of America's ballad types did, and that apron bit was indeed about a woman with child and unmarried. Oh, yes, I do indeed remember the bowl weevil song.

I think it goes something like:

First time I seen the bowl weevil,
He was standin on the square.
Next time I seen the bowl weevil,
He had his family there
Just lookin' for a home,
Just lookin' for a home.

(psssst, I think panz missed my bit about Shearing.) Razz

Could you give this record a spin today please? It's for a special girl in Daytona Beach Florida:

Brook Benton
Endlessly
Written by - Clyde Otis & Brook Benton
Peaked at #12 - 6/59

Higher than the highest mountain
And deeper than the deepest sea
That's how I will love you, oh, darling, endlessly

Softer than the gentle breezes
And stronger than the wild oak tree
That's how I will hold you, oh, darling, endlessly

Oh, my love, you are my heaven
You are my kingdom, you are my crown
Oh, my love, you're all that I prayed for
You were made for these arms to surround

Faithful as a morning sunrise
And sacred as a love can be
That's how I will love you, oh darling, endlessly

I hope you can play it because I know she will be listening in. Thanks.

I have a request for your fine Bluegrass show...it's a song I heard by Jimmy Martin back in the 60's. I believe Allan Shelton was on the banjo cause he drives like a trucker on amphetamines...

Better Times A-Coming

Well the cows went dry, the hens don't lay, there's no place I can borrow
Give the landlord all the news and the rent comes due tomorrow
Lots of money in the bank they say that's where they keep it
Not only wouldn't they loan me some they wouldn't let me see it

So pick away on the old banjo
Keep that guitar strumming
Put more water in the soup
There's better times a-coming

Well Mary Lou could pull a plow if only I would let her
Twice as strong as any ox and she don't smell much better
I didn't kiss that Mary Lou but once and then I had to leave her
Make's my collar get so tight, I start to burn with fever

* Refrain

Well a man came by the other day a-huntin manual labor
I told him I hadn't seen the guy why don't he ask the neighbor
So come on boys get your gals and kick your heels up higher
Don't let no one steal your gal just hold her a little tighter

* Refrain

My rooster used to chase a hen he just kept getting thinner
He nearly ran himselfs to death so I bought him in for dinner
Cotton crops are mighty poor the weeds are really a-growin
I need a woman pretty bad to help me with the hoein

Ah, McTag. The only "girl" I know in Daytona is me. Thank you, Brit.

Panz, I have never heard that blue grass song. Great! and it's hard to find stuff when the thread gets too long.

Well, listeners. Raggedy sent me a great link, but I'll have to get her permission before I post it. Unbelievable info!

Okay, gal. I've got it saved to the favorite files here in the WA2K studio.

You know listeners, throughout history, there are tragic love affairs, and this one Raggedy found for me upon my request concerning a NYT's crossword puzzle:

How far have we come, I wonder?
