I heard a story years ago that this song was also about Maine...

There was a snowstorm in Maine in July way back... ruined all the crops...

This song was written by Stephen Foster, and won the best sentimental song contest at Andrew's Eagle Ice-cream Parlor and Saloon in Pittsburg, PA., September 11, 1847.

Biographical Sketch Stephen Collins Foster

Thanks for that Walter...

Shephen Foster seemed well traveled, steam ships (also mentioned) went from Boston to Portland... and, "the underground railroad" mentioned in your article stretched all the way through Maine into Canada.

Also
There is a discrepancy as to where Paul Bunyan originates, Maine "claims" him too Smile

Maine history is rather folkloreish... Smile

Well, there's our Walter with Stephen Foster.

I know that man, Walter:

I Dream of Walter With the Light Brown Hair
(Stephen Foster)

I dream of Walter with the light brown hair
Borne like a vapor on the summer air
I see him tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on his way.
Many were the wild notes his merry voice would pour,
Many were the blithe birds that warbled them o'er

CHORUS:
I dream of Walter with the light brown hair
Floating like a vapor on the soft, summer air.)
I sigh for Walter, but his light form strayed
Far from the fond parts round his native glade;
His smiles have vanished and his sweet songs flown
Flitting like the dreams that have cheered us and gone.

Now the nodding wild flow'rs may wither on the shore,
While his gentle fingers will cull no more.

End of song. Razz

Rex, nice Letty gets mischievous occasionally, as I just did with Walter.

Walter, it is great to see you laugh, and although I know that you don't drink, this song is for you.

Ein zwei drei vier
lift your stein and drink your beer
ein zwei drei vier
lift your stein and drink your beer
Drink! drink! drink!
to eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me!
drink! drink! drink!
to lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree!
Here's a hope that those bright eyes will shine
lovingly, longingly soon into mine!
may those lips that are red and sweet,
tonight with joy my own lips meet!
Drink! drink!
let the toast start!
may young hearts never part!
drink! drink! drink!
let every true lover salute his sweetheart!
Drink! drink! drink!
to arms that are white and warm as a rose in the sun!
drink! drink! drink!
to hearts that will love one, only when i am the one!
here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
tenderly, trustingly soon around mine!
All i ask is the right to see those smiling eyes beguiling me
drink! drink!
let the toast start!
may young hearts never part!
drink! drink! drink!
let every true lover salute his sweetheart!
let's drink!
Drink! drink! drink!
to eyes that are bright as stars when they're shining on me!
drink! drink! drink!
to lips that are red and sweet as the fruit on the tree!
here's a hope that those soft arms will twine
tenderly, trustingly soon around mine!
All i ask is a right to see those smiling eyes beguiling me
drink! drink!
let the toast start!
may young hearts never part!
drink! drink! drink!
let every true lover salute his sweetheart!
let's drink!

i don't drink, either, but i have a weak spot for this oldie by the Andrews Sisters.

There's a garden, what a garden
Only happy faces bloom there
And there's never any room there
For a worry or a gloom there

Oh there's music and there's dancing
And a lot of sweet romancing
When they play the polka
They all get in the swing

Every time they hear that oom-pa-pa
Everybody feels so tra-la-la
They want to throw their cares away
They all go lah-de-ah-de-ay

Then they hear a rumble on the floor, the floor
It's a big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples form a ring
For miles around you'll hear them sing...

Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel, we've got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararrel, ring out a song of good cheer
Now's the time to roll the barrel, for the gang's all here

Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

Then they hear a rumble on the floor-or-or-or
It's a big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples they form a ring
For miles around you'll hear them sing

Zing do da do ding do da-do-do-day

----- instrumental break -----

Roll it out, roll it out, roll out the barrel
Dump-dump-da da-da da-dat en da-da-da-da-da
Sing a song of good cheer
'Cause the whole gang is here
Roll it out, roll it out
Let's do the beer barrel polka

Yit, you are spot on, mr. turtle. One does not have to drink to enjoy drinking songs.

(Well, listeners, I had a nice dissertation all ready to read and somebody threw a lightning bolt at our tower. Poof--more ledgerdermain)

Consider this heady song:

You Go To My Head (sung by many)

You go to my head and you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two

The thrill of the thought that you might give a thought to my plea

Casts a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be

You go to my head with a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head

This version was by Rod Stewart, folks.

<impressive radio voiced anouncer guy> "say johnny have you travelled alot?"

<johnny cash> "have i travelled, well.....

I was totin' my pack along the dusty Winnemucca road
When along came a semi with a high and canvas covered load
"If you're going to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
So I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land."

(Chorus)
I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man
Across the deserts bare, man
I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere.

I've been to Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow,
Sarasota, Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma, Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo, Tocopilla, Barranquilla, and Padilla,
I'm a killer.

(Chorus)
I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man
Across the deserts bare, man
I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere.

I've been to Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana, Washington, Houston,
Kingston, Texarkana, Monterey, Ferriday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa, Glen Rock, Black
Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa, Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devil's Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.

(Chorus)
I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man
Across the deserts bare, man
I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere.

I've been to Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika, Shefferville,
Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica, Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield,
Shreveport, Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond Du Lac, Davenport, Idaho, Jellicoe,
Argentina, Diamontina, Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean'a.

(Chorus)
I've been everywhere, man
I've been everywhere, man

I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere.

I've been everywhere.

dj, Do you mean the man in black did that song? I thought it was The Singing Ranger, Hank Snow. Well, I think he wrote it at least.

Hmmm, red wigglers. Must be a fishing worm; certainly not a blood worm.

I know, dj:

They always, always pick on me;
They never, never let me be;
I'm so very lonely, awfully sad;

But, I know what I'll do, bye 'n' bye,
I'll eat some worms and then I'll die,
When I'm gone, you wait and see,
They'll all be sorry that they picked on me! Crying or Very sad Laughing

Okay, listeners. dj and I are at an impasse.

Here's what we'll do. If dj guesses my amphora; I'll guess his commercial.

Sound fair?

In the meantime; in between time, Ain't we Got fun.

FUN
(Gus Kahn, Raymond B. Egan / Richard A. Whiting, 1921)

Bill collectors gather
'Round and rather
Haunt the cottage next door
Men the grocer and butcher sent
Men who call for the rent
But with in a happy chappy
And his bride of only a year
Seem to be so cheerful
Here's an earful
Of the chatter you hear

Just to make their trouble nearly double
Something happen'd last night
To their chimney a gray bird came
Mister Stork is his name
And I'll bet two pins
A pair of twins
Just happen'd in with the bird
Still they're very gay and merry
Just at dawning I heard

Every morning
Every evening
Ain't we got fun
Not much money
Oh but honey
Ain't we got fun
The rent's unpaid dear
We haven't a bus
But smiles were made dear
For people like us
In the winter in the Summer
Don't we have fun
Times are bum and getting bummer
Still we have fun
There's nothing surer
The rich get rich and the poor get children
In the meantime
In the between time
Ain't we got fun.

Every morning
Every evening
Don't we have fun
Twins and cares dear come in pairs dear
Don't we have fun
We've only started
As mommer and pop
Are we downhearted
I'll say that we're not
Landlords mad and getting madder
Ain't we got fun
Times are so bad and getting badder
Still we have fun
There's nothing surer
The rich get rich and the poor get laid off
In the meantime
In between time
Ain't we got fun.

However, folks, I looked up dj's red wigglers. They are compost stuff.

Hey, Canada. Go back a couple of transcripts, and you will see how we got off on urns and things.

Ah, dj. I love your picture of Betty Boop. That's what my fishing buddy called me.

Sinead O'Connor I Want To Be Loved By You lyrics

I wanna be loved by you,
Just you and nobody else but you
I wanna be loved by you
Alone poo poo pi doo
I wanna be kissed by you
Just you, nobody else but you
I wanna be loved by you
I couldn't aspire
To anything higher
Then to fill a desire
To make you my own
I wanna be loved by you,
Just you and nobody else but you
I wanna be loved by you
Alone
I couldn't aspire
To anything higher
Then to fill a desire
To make you my own
Tada tada ta tada
I wanna be loved by you
Just you, nobody else but you
I wanna be loved by you
I wanna be loved by you
I wanna be loved by you
Alone
