Percy's Song - lyrics

Bad news, bad news
Come to me where I sleep
Turn, turn, turn again
Sayin’ one of your friends
Is in trouble deep
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Tell me the trouble
Tell once to my ear
Turn, turn, turn again
Joliet prison
And ninety-nine years
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Oh what’s the charge
Of how this came to be
Turn, turn, turn again
Manslaughter
In the highest of degree
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

I sat down and wrote
The best words I could write
Turn, turn, turn again
Explaining to the judge
I’d be there on Wednesday night
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Without a reply
I left by the moon
Turn, turn, turn again
And was in his chambers
By the next afternoon
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Could ya tell me the facts?
I said without fear
Turn, turn, turn again
That a friend of mine
Would get ninety-nine years
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

A crash on the highway
Flew the car to a field
Turn, turn, turn again
There was four persons killed
And he was at the wheel
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

But I knew him as good
As I’m knowin’ myself
Turn, turn, turn again
And he wouldn’t harm a life
That belonged to someone else
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

The judge spoke
Out of the side of his mouth
Turn, turn, turn again
Sayin’, “The witness who saw
He left little doubt”
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

That may be true
He’s got a sentence to serve
Turn, turn, turn again
But ninety-nine years
He just don’t deserve
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Too late, too late
For his case it is sealed
Turn, turn, turn again
His sentence is passed
And it cannot be repealed
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

But he ain’t no criminal
And his crime it is none
Turn, turn, turn again
What happened to him
Could happen to anyone
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

And at that the judge jerked forward
And his face it did freeze
Turn, turn, turn again
Sayin’, “Could you kindly leave
My office now, please”
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

Well his eyes looked funny
And I stood up so slow
Turn, turn, turn again
With no other choice
Except for to go
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

I walked down the hallway
And I heard his door slam
Turn, turn, turn again
I walked down the courthouse stairs
And I did not understand
Turn, turn to the rain
And the wind

And I played my guitar
Through the night to the day
Turn, turn, turn again
And the only tune
My guitar could play
Was, “Oh the Cruel Rain
And the Wind”

Thank you, edgar, for restoring our signal and your comment on those two songs..

Pat Boone's Friendly Persuasion was really good

Didn't know "the jester" doing Percy, but thanks for the lyrics and the introduction.

Going to say goodnight with two songs. First Deano

Now, The Byrds:

@Letty,
I really liked and appreciated Dean's voice. 'cause he sang with such ease but loaded with feeling.

Byrds were one of my fave groups...helped the Folk-Rock movement get a foothold.

To me this (Etta) is the voice of the blues. I can't decide whether or not I like Otis Redding's version or hers. There's room for both. What are your opinions?

Otis Redding:

When two artists sing the same song, I generally accept each as a different song, because they interpret them according to their own artistry. I tried to tell that to a guy that hated Peggy Lee for doing a cover of Little Willie John's Fever.

@edgarblythe,
Hahaha,. Peggy Lee's Fever...now that one is a classic case. Some people lock onto the one version..(typically the first one - especially if it's popular).

What I hate with many covers is when someone anesthetizes it and strips away the personality to make it mainstream or just to make a buck. This mistreatment is done to a few icons masterpieces:

What follows is a partial list:
Big Mama Thornton
Little Richard
Etta James
Janis Joplin
Warren Zevon
Rolling Stones

... and here's a partial list of those done by a few icons:
Pat Boone
Elvis (sorry fans)
Beatles (sorry fans)
Rod Stewart
Celine Dion
Guns 'n Roses (Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Sympathy for the Devil)
Limp Bizkit
Michael Bolton (where do I start? When can I stop?)
Michael Buble (where do I start?)
Miley Ray Cyrus (Rebel Yell)
Madonna (American Pie...really?!)

I never did hold with blaming someone for covering another artist, although some, like Michael Bolton, sometimes annoy me. Covers have been done as long as there has been music.

@edgarblythe,
Yeah, but some covers just stick in a guy's craw because they butcher the character of a song.

On a slightly different note, here's Tennessee Ernie doing Shenandoah

Good morning, from here in our Florida radio station.

edgar and Ragman, thanks for your comments. Loved Etta's Been Lovin' You Too Long as well as Otis Redding.

Tennessee Ernie's Shenadoah, and The Kingston Trio's The Rev Mr. Black. The Coasters Poison Ivy were good ones.

As edgar knows, I always like the original versions. Maybe I heard this incorrectly, but did I hear that Peggy Lee didn't do the original Fever?
Sorry if I misread your contributions, guys. Did anyone do a cover of The Rolling Stones?

Two songs for the morning here. First, Written on the Wind.

Now, an instrumental version of this great song, then the vocal rendition.

Written on the Wind is a fine song. Charades is a good one too.
