edgar, Loved Anytime at All by the fab four and that one by Harry and Kitty was great. I remember it best by Ella Fitzgerald, however, and I sang it when I was in the fifth grade.

hbg, you always play great songs on our radio. Love Seventy Six Trombones by Mr. Wilson.

Here's a surprise to me, y'all. A birthday boy.

I know Kyle. And I was not surprised he's a musician, because his dad has always loved music so much.
Today is the late Mickey Newbury's birthday.

edgar, Thanks again for your comment. Don't know Mickey Newbury, but She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye was great.

hbg, I had no idea that Bob Wills and The McKinney Sisters sang Straighten Up and Fly Right as I recall it best by Nat Cole. Thanks for that version.

Speaking of flying, here's "old blue eyes" to do a great one.

Aloha everyone. I found 2 brass players, representing the letters N & O.

(Theodore) Fats Navarro was yet another talented musician who died much too early, in his case because of substance abuse. Here he is on the tune "Lady Bird": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2PzD_PPdd4

Next, we have New Orleans jazz pioneer Joe "King" Oliver, with "Dippermouth Blues". In addition to his playing, he made a lasting contribution to music as Louis Armstrong's mentor. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryUL7ix_ONo

today is the birthday of Grace Jones :

Quote:
Grace Jones (born 19 May 1948 ) is a Jamaican singer, actress and model.

Jones started out as a model, regularly appearing at the New York City nightclub Studio 54. Jones secured a record deal with Island Records in 1977, which resulted in a string of dance-club hits. In the late 1970s, she adapted the emerging electronic music style and adopted a severe, androgynous look. Jones found mainstream success in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, scoring Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart. Her albums include Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Slave to the Rhythm, and her biggest hits are "Pull Up to the Bumper", "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)", "Private Life", "Slave to the Rhythm" and "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYkVtz6ozJE

Quote:
Jean-Paul Goude was responsible for Jones's dramatic transformation, the distinctive androgynous appearance, the square-cut and angular padded clothes. Goude is the artist behind many of Jones's album covers; her first two albums with Chris Blackwell and the Compass Point All Stars, Warm Leatherette (1980), and Nightclubbing (1981), which featured a charcoal skinned Jones sporting an angular padded blazer, and a cigarette in her lips

edgar, Love Wayne's Summer Wind. That brings backs some memories.

Hey, turtle man, Really enjoyed both Fats and King Oliver.

hbg, Grace's La Vie En Rose was lovely. Sachmo did a good job, however.

How about two jazz guys for today. First, Herbie

edgar, I missed your Kingston Trio version of It was a very good year. It was great.

Thanks again for your comment on the jazz guys.

Don't know that one by Gene Pitney, but I remember him for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and it didn't even make the movie.

Great one by Tony and Amy doing Body and Soul.

Going to say goodnight a bit early as I a bit tired.

First, Al

today is the birthday of a famous opera star :

Quote:
Dame Nellie Melba GBE (19 May 1861 – 23 February 1931), born Helen "Nellie" Porter Mitchell, was an Australian operatic soprano. She became one of the most famous singers of the late Victorian Era and the early 20th century. She was the first Australian to achieve international recognition as a classical musician.

Up early this morning. My daughter is ill again.

edgar, That unknown singer is Poll Potts, and here is his song in English.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G84g4ASub_o

hbg, Loved Nellie Melba's Lo Hear the Gentle Lark as well as Teddy's You Are Always in my Heart.

More synchronicity, because today is Jimmy Stewart's birthday and he was in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Here's a tribute to the legend.

Vertigo didn't do well at the box office because he was the villain.

FYI, Paul Potts won a talent contest in UK, the same one Susan Boyle participated in.

I have two more jazz alphabet selections today. First up, Jaco Pastorius, *perhaps* the most celebrated electric bass player ever, at least in jazz. (James Jamerson of Motown's 'Funk Brothers' and Carol Kaye of the 'Wrecking Crew" are notable studio bassists.) Among his accomplishments, he invented fretless electric bass. From his debut album, Jaco does a Charlie Parker tune (composed by Miles Davis but credited to Parker), "Donna Lee": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdqje73KQwg

I couldn't find a jazz surname starting with Q, so let's settle for Quincy Jones' arrangement of "Killer Joe". Ray Brown plays killer bass here, and Grady Tate does a cool Art Blakey-esque drumroll after the first bridge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVkMheBXY28
