Welcome back to you as well, edgar. Loved that song, and thanks for the memory.

Ah, hbg, Just friends lovers no more. Love the bird man, Ontario. A Night in Tunisia was fantastic.

@hamburgboy,
You did C & D. Here's B, as in Bud Powell. In any list of bebop greats, Bud should be included in same mention with Parker & Gillespie, in my opinion.

For those unfamiliar with Bud's somewhat tragic life, he spent time in mental institutions. So, this famous piece has an ironic title:

What a wonderful day and evening on WA2K.

edgar, Jack Clement's When I Dream was lovely.

yitwail, Ah, poor Bud Powell. Really enjoyed Un PoCo Loco by him.

hbg, I played Wagner because I understand he got his name from Wodin. Loved Fatha Hines, Ontario.

My goodnight song. The Four Freshmen.

and now a birthday :

Quote:
Ernest Loring "Red" Nichols (May 8, 1905 – June 28, 1965) was an American jazz cornettist, composer, and jazz bandleader.

Over his long career, Nichols recorded in a wide variety of musical styles, and critic Steve Leggett[1] describes him as "an expert cornet player, a solid improviser, and apparently

a workaholic, since he is rumored to have appeared on over 4,000 recordings during the 1920s alone."
Cool

Quote:
Woden (wō`dən; German vō`dĭn), Norse Odin (ō`dĭn), in Germanic religion and mythology, the supreme god. His cult, although widespread among the Germanic tribes, was sometimes subordinated to that of his son Thor. With his brothers, Woden fashioned the earth and the sky from the dead body of the giant Ymir, and from an ash tree and an alder he created the first man and woman. As chief of the gods of Asgard Asgard , in Norse mythology, home of the gods, also known as Aesir. It consisted of luxurious palaces and halls, in which the gods (whose chief was Odin) dwelled, conferred, and banqueted. One of the most beautiful of these halls was Valhalla.
..... he established the laws that governed the universe and controlled the destiny of humanity. At his court at Valhalla Valhalla or Walhalla , in Norse mythology, Odin's hall for slain heroes. This martial paradise was one of the most beautiful halls of Asgard. The dead warriors, brought to Valhalla by the Valkyries, fought during the day and feasted at night.

.. he was attended by the Valkyries. Woden was widely known as a god of war, but he was important also as a god of learning, of poetry, and of magic. His wife was Frigg, and his children included Thor, Balder, and Tiw. He was identified with the Roman god Mercury, and among Germanic peoples Mercury's day became Woden's day (Wednesday).

In Richard Wagner's opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Woden is called Wotan.

( this is certainly loud enough to qualify " HERR " Wagner as " SUPER " Wodin Shocked - though the visuals are excellent )

Hey, everybody. Over slept a bit because I stayed up too late last evening.

edgar, Charlie Rich's My Elusive Dreams was lovely but a bit sad.

hbg, Thanks for your explanation of Wagner and I love Twilight of the Gods. Red Nichols was a goodie as well as Hank Snow's home place. Loved the visuals. Also enjoyed Wilf Carter's Bluebird on Your windowsill.

Today is Billy Joel's birthday. I never realized that he was Jewish nor that he had such a difficult life. Here's a tribute to the man.

Resuming my alphabetical jazz feature, I'm reverting to my original plan of showcasing one letter of the alphabet per day, like Sesame Street. Laughing (Down the line, I'll have trouble with some letters, like X.) For the letter B, listeners get a bonus 2 selections instead of one.

Kicking things off, the Jazz Messenger himself, Art Blakey, with vocalist Jon Hendricks, on 'Along Came Betty': (FYI, I suspect "Messenger" alludes to Blakey's religion, Islam, but maybe someone can confirm that.)

Wrapping it up, Clifford Brown, who died tragically young in an auto accident, with a gorgeous rendition of "Stardust":

@Letty,
Coltrane was a candidate for the letter C tomorrow but I've already decided on an older musician. You'll have to tune it tomorrow to find out who.

Art played Along Came Betty especially for you -- what an honor. Smile
