George Melachrino (born George Miltiades; 1 May 1909 — 18 June 1965)[1] was a musician, movie composer, and musical director who was English born of Greek and Italian descent. He was an accomplished player of the violin, viola, oboe, clarinet and saxophone.
Willie Nelson references her in Devil in a Sleepin' Bag on Shotgun Willie thus:
Just got back from New York City Kris (Kristofferson) and Rita (Coolidge) done it all Bought perfection there for all the world to see Lord, I heard an angel singing in that Philharmonic Hall Rita Coolidge, Rita Coolidge, cleft for me
Coolidge's greatest success on the pop charts came during 1977-1978 with four consecutive top 25 hits. The list consisted of covers of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher",
Boz Scaggs' "We're All Alone",
and The Temptations' "The Way You Do The Things You Do", followed by "You".
Being an old folkie (also raised around greater Boston) Buffy was one of my fave singer-songwriters. As was Tom Rush, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen. There are some songs that stop me in my tracks every time I hear them. This is one of the best of them due to its purity, intimacy and simple arrangement.
Sorry that I can't acknowledge each contribution, but as you know, thumbing each one of you up is my way of saying thank you. Still feeling a bit ill, however.
