good afternon all !

today is the birthday of Django Reinhardt ... ... ...

Quote:
Jean "Django" Reinhardt[1] (French pronunciation: [dʒɑ̃ɡo ʁenɑʁt]; 23 January 1910 – 16 May 1953) was a pioneering virtuoso jazz guitarist and composer.

Reinhardt is often regarded as one of the greatest guitar players of all time and regarded as the first important European jazz musician who made major contributions to the development of the idiom.

Reinhardt invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called 'hot' jazz guitar) that has since become a living musical tradition within French gypsy culture. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, he co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, described by critic Thom Jurek as "one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz."[2] Reinhardt's most popular compositions have become jazz standards, including "Minor Swing", "Daphne", "Belleville", "Djangology", "Swing '42", and "Nuages".

.................................................................................................................

another great musician has his birthday today : Gary Burton .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxtr86zmYbk

Quote:

Gary Burton (born January 23, 1943, Anderson, Indiana) is an American jazz vibraphonist.

A true original on the vibraphone, Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the prevailing two-mallet technique. This approach caused Burton to be heralded as an innovator and his sound and technique are widely imitated.[1] He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz and popularizing the duet format in jazz, as well as being a major figure in jazz education due to his 30 years at the Berklee College of Music.

@hamburgboy,
Welcome back, hbg. You always add flavor to our radio.

Django is a great guitarist. Especially like The Sheik.

Thanks for the introduction to Gary Burton. Love that group featuring him and his vibraphone.

Here are a couple to match The Sheik. Became fascinated with Rudolph when I saw Anthony Dexter do the story of his life. Okay, so I've played it before, but it's worth listening to again.

When he died at thirty years of age, women were going crazy with grief.

Now, a funny one by Ray Stevens.

I remember when Danny of E Street Band died. I have often wondered if Ahab would have been a hit if released after the never ending wars in Afghanistan and the like had been underway.
Good ones, hbg.
I am still busy outside. Just stopped to tend to Punky the dog.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, wasn't Ahab a hit? Thanks again for your comments.

Didn't know There You Go by the "man in black". Your dog Punky reminded me of e.e.cummings.

maggie and milly and molly and may

by E. E. Cummings

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach(to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles,and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose(like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea.

Love those last to lines.

Now, set to music.

@Letty,
My point was that Ahab was a hit before we made war on Muslim countries: Would it have been such if introduced after 911?

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for the explanation and the comment, edgar. Ferlin Husky's Eli the Camel was funny and reminded me of Odgen Nash.

The Camel

The camel has a single hump;
The dromedary, two;
Or else the other way around.
I'm never sure are you?

Also liked George Jones' The Race is On

Going to say goodnight now with one of my favorite Canadians

Fly me to the Moon reminds me of this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYAUAELUSts
Swinging on a Star was recorded in 1944 by singer Bing Crosby. Andy Williams and his brothers backed up Bing on his 1944 version His song writer, Jimmy Van Heusen, was at Crosbys house one evening for dinner and to discuss a song for the movie Going My Way. During the meal, one of the children began complaining about how he didnt want to go to school the next day. The singer turned to his son and said to him, If you dont go to school, you might grow up to be a mule. Do you wanna do that? Van Heusen thought that this clever rebuke would make a good song for the movie. He pictured Bing, playing a priest, talking to a group of children acting much the same way that his own child acted that night. When he took his idea to his partner, Johnny Burke, Johnny was quick to approve, and they wrote the song.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for restoring our signal, edgar and for your comment.

For the longest time, many people thought that song referred to LSD. Lots of folks have challenged that allusion, but it's still a good song.

Inspired by The Lonely Heart's Club band I found this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE6kbNuSOEY

and, the lyrics.

None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
Alone and parted
Far from joy and gladness
Heaven's boundless arch I see
Spread out above me
O what a distance drear to one
Who loves me

None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
Alone and parted
Far from joy and gladness

My senses fail
A burning fire
Devours me
None but the lonely heart
Can know my sadness
