a musical masterpiece by a wonderful singer :

Giuseppe de Stefano

He was known as the "Golden voice" or "The most beautiful voice", as the true successor of Beniamino Gigli. He was also known for his long-term performance and recording association and brief romantic episode with the soprano Maria Callas.

Compay Segundo of the Buena Vista Social Club has his birthday today .
( mighty fine music for a sunday )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_cxCVqzOuc&feature=related

Quote:
Compay Segundo (Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz, Siboney, Cuba 18 November 1907 – Havana, 13 July 2003) was a Cuban trova guitarist, singer and composer.

Segundo's most famous composition is Chan Chan, the opening track on the Buena Vista Social Club album, whose four opening chords are instantly recognizable all over the world. Chan Chan was recorded by Segundo himself various times as well as by countless other Latin artists. Other compositions are Saradonga, La calabaza, Hey caramba, Macusa, Saludo Compay. These are all sones, and this differentiates him from the more usual trova musicians, with their devotion to the bolero. However, it seems his interests went much further

At a fiesta he sang to President Fidel Castro, who took his pulse and joked about his vitality despite his 90-plus years. "Who could have imagined that?" he asked when he found himself at the Vatican City, performing Chan Chan before Pope John Paul II. He explained his longevity simply: mutton consommé and a drink of rum.

Fantastic mix of music on WA2K today.

hbg and I share the same love for Johnny Mercer as does our cockney friend. That version of Accentuate the Positive was funny. We all know that Harold Arlen did the music and Johnny the lyrics to that one.

Nice to see Dad and Daughter with us as well as Sylvester the Cat and our regular crew.

As you all know thumbing up each contribution is my way of saying thank you.

Going to say goodnight with two songs. First Bobby and Johnny doing Two of a Kind.

Now, The Bells. (originally written and done by Edith Piaf)

That was our Sunday song for the day.

A tired Letty once again says with love to you all.
