good evening all !
today is the birthday of a german singer - not well known in north-america -
but was a big star in germany and europe by age EIGHT ! : Connie Froboess .

here she is with a Paul Anka hit : DIANA !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo8pGR0fki4

Quote:
As Conny Froboess she had her first hit record in 1951, aged eight, with a song written by her father. "Pack die Badehose ein" (Pack your swimsuit") is a cheery tune about a group of children going swimming on a hot summer's day at Wannsee. The title of the song has become a set phrase and synonym for going swimming easily recognized even by speakers of German who have never heard of the song.

In 1962, Froboess finished in sixth place at the Eurovision Song Contest, where she sang "Zwei kleine Italiener" (Two little Italians) for Germany. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[1] The same year she appeared as herself in Jean Renoir's comedy film The Elusive Corporal.

Later, Froboess became a theatre and movie actress. In 1982 she appeared in Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Veronika Voss. In 1988 she played Marthe Schwerdtlein in Goethe's Faust I, a performance that was also released as film: Faust – Vom Himmel durch die Welt zur Hölle. In 1997 Froboess played the mother of the protagonist Martin Brest (Til Schweiger) in the film Knockin' on Heaven's Door. On stage, she appeared in Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm in 1976, staged by Dieter Dorn.[2] and played Ellida in Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea in 1990.[3] At the Salzburg Festival 2004, she played Mary Tyrone in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night.[4] The same year she played the title role in Bertolt Brecht's play Mother Courage and Her Children.

( from children's star to serious drama - quite a remarkable change )

Quote:

John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985) was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor and soprano.[1]

He was born in Inglewood, California, the son of vaudeville performers Kate Haley and John Sims.[2] Growing up in a performing family, Sims learned to play both drums and clarinet at an early age. His father was a vaudeville hoofer, and Sims prided himself on remembering many of the steps his father taught him.

Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Sims developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his career, he played with renowned bands, including Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, and Buddy Rich. Sims replaced his idol Ben Webster in Sid Catlett's Quartet in 1944. Sims was also one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers", and he was known among his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the field. He frequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with his friend Gerry Mulligan's sextet, and later with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band.

In the 1950s and '60s, Sims had a long, successful partnership as co-leader of a quintet with Al Cohn, which recorded under the name "Al and Zoot". That group was a favorite at the New York club The Half Note. Always fond of the higher register of the tenor sax, Zoot also liked to play alto and late in his career added the soprano saxophone to his performances, while recording a series of albums for the Pablo Records label of impresario Norman Granz. Zoot also played on some of Jack Kerouac's recordings.

Sims acquired the nickname "Zoot" early in his career while he was in the Kenny Baker band in California. The name was later appropriated for a sax-playing Muppet.

Hurry back, Barry and edgar.

Speaking of Clair de Lune, there's a big old witch's moon peeping through our studio window.

hbg, It's Monday here, so your tribute to Zoot Sims is appropriate. Bud knew him well. Don't know Connie, but her rendition of Diana was great.

A couple of songs for the early morning here.

First, a tribute to a birthday man.

McTag, I sent you the lyrics to People Will Say We're in Love. Did you miss it?

No I sure didn't, thank you, but you didn't say whether you thought that was the best goldarned orchestra playing the most amazing arrangements you ever heard in your whole life either.
Smile Wink
I just wondered whether folks here on the Radio like them as much as I do.

A quiz question: who was the most prolific Russian composer?

answer: Irving Berlin (born May 11, 1888, Israel Isadore Baline)

my favourite couplet of his:

"I'd like to take his reveille
And step upon it heavily...."

Good morning, peoples. I wish the local weather could be shared by all this week. The storm on the east coast brings back some dark memories of Hurricane Ike, which gave us here a long struggle to recover.

Sorry, McTag. I guess I need to check out Oklahoma again.

Cold here, edgar, but we missed the worst of the storm, buddy.

Okay, McTag. Irving Berlin, right?

Here's the one to which you referred.

@hamburgboy,
Welcome back, hbg. Thanks again for the info on both of your performers.

Melba Moore's This is It was really good, as was Randy Jackson and the Gypsys.

Ah, shucks. I had hoped that our edgar and our McTag would have commented on some of my contributions.

I know that you'll know this one and like it as well.

Welcome back, Barry and edgar.

Didn't know that Doris did Celery Stalks at Midnight. I recall it best by a big band; will have to check that out.

Terry's 900 Miles wouldn't play here, however.

edgar, thanks again for your comment and that was one I didn't know by the great Bobby Darin. Multiplication does make me smile, however.

Here's one to match hbg's gypsy.

I feel a bit down as my daughter won't be here for my birthday. So sorry about the horrible weather that's occurring in the North Eastern states. When I was a kid, I always went to Halloween parties dressed as a gypsy. I even had my palm read once.
