good evening all !
today is the birthday of " Jelly Roll " Morton -
here he is playing " King Porter Stump " :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8_2ISGOIjU&feature=fvsr

Quote:
Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (October 20, 1885 – July 10, 1941),[1] known professionally as Jelly Roll Morton, was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist, bandleader and composer.

Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton is perhaps most notable as jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential spirit and characteristics when notated.[2] His composition "Jelly Roll Blues" was the first published jazz composition, in 1915. Morton is also notable for naming and popularizing the "Spanish tinge" (habanera rhythm and tresillo), and for penning such standards as "Wolverine Blues", "Black Bottom Stomp", and "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say", the latter a tribute to New Orleans personalities from the turn of the 19th century to 20th century.

Reputed for his arrogance and self-promotion as often as recognized in his day for his musical talents, Morton claimed to have invented jazz outright in 1902 — much to the derision of later musicians and critics.[3] However, jazz historian, musician, and composer Gunther Schuller writes about Morton's "hyperbolic assertions" that there is "no proof to the contrary" and that Morton's "considerable accomplishments in themselves provide reasonable substantiation".[

What a wonderful mix of music on WA2K this evening. Wish I could acknowledge each one, but as you know, thumbing up each contributor is my way of saying thanks.

So nice to see Ontario, Scotland, and London with us today. Maybe Ireland will pop in later.

Birthday of Ragman and Goethe were great responses. Love you all.

Here are my two good night songs. Anyone remember Stacy Keach as Mike Hammer in Harlem Nocturne? He was also marvelous in The Ninth Configuration.

First Harlem Nocturne.

@Letty,
Good Night, Letty.

The young girl who sang that Prince song also does a lovely version of the 1940's Glen Miller hit, At Last.

Good morning, WA2K folks.

Rock, I love Never Been to Spain by Three Dog Night. Wandel, Chelsea was great doing At Last. Didn't know that Glen Miller had written that, buddy. Another mystery unresolved.

Hey, Texas. Stan Freberg was one of the funniest guys that I have ever heard. His album Stan Presents The United States of America was priceless.

Two songs for the morning here in Florida. First, a great tribute to a birthday man.

Just a reminder of his existence.

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (born 21 September 1934) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet, and novelist. His work often explores religion, isolation, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour.

While giving the speech at Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008, Lou Reed described Cohen as belonging to the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters"

Had no idea that he was Canadian.

Now, We're searching for eeyore. Where are you?

Funny version of Donkey Serenade.

@Letty,
At Last was written for a 1941 movie by someone else but performed by Glen Miller and his orchestra.

@wandeljw,
Thanks for the info, wandel. Be sure and check out Leonard and the funny version of The Donkey Serenade, buddy.

Today is H.G. Wells birthday, so here is a tribute to him. I'm still searching for the original trailer to Orson Wells War of the Worlds duplicity.\

Why settle for an Orson Wells War of the Worlds trailer, when you can listen to the whole thing:

edgar, A long time ago, I watched the original movie on Turner Classics and it was in technicolor. Can't find it anywhere, Texas. The reason people panicked in America is because of the verisimilitude (our word for the day) of Orson's radio broadcast. Amazing what that radio show did and later Orson apologized for the horrible cause and results. The end was that the Martians were killed by the common cold virus. Station breaks were mandated to prevent future problems.

Here's the trailer of The Time Machine and a brief summary.

http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1442119961/

Alexander Hartdegen is a scientist and a inventor, who is determined to prove that time travel is possible. When the girl he loves is tragically killed, Alexander is determined to go back in time and change the path. Testing his theories, the time machine is hurtled 800,000 years into the future. He he discovers a terrifying new world. Instead of mankind being the hunter, they are now the hunted, with him stuck in the middle

Hey, Rock A Horse named Bill was a great parody on Dixieland.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, Thanks for that trailer to War of the Worlds. Don't think that's the one that I saw, however.

Bobby Bare's Marie Laveau was great. You don't want to mess around with us witches. Razz

Today is Bill Murray's birthday, so here is a tribute to him.
