This timeless Fado is a famous icon of my city Coimbra, a symbol of the old University of Coimbra ...it is a anthem to the good old bohemian days and its students passage through there.

(In the film you can also see the traditional suit of the students with its black cloak crossed as traditionally is required while singing the fado...)

Abril Em Portugal
José Galhardo

Coimbra é uma lição
De sonho e tradição
O lente é uma canção
E a lua a faculdade
O livro é uma mulher
Só passa quem souber
E aprende-se a dizer saudade

Coimbra do choupal
Ainda és capital
Do amor em Portugal, ainda
Coimbra onde uma vez
Com lágrimas se fez
A história dessa Inês tão linda

Coimbra das canções
Coimbra que nos põe
Os nossos corações, à luz...
Coimbra dos doutores
Pra nós os seus cantores
A fonte dos amores és tu.

@Fil Albuquerque,
The original song was simply entitled "Coimbra" by Raul Ferrão music author and the original lirics by José Galhardo...since then many versions have been made from France to England and the United States with different lyrics...

@Fil Albuquerque,
Hoorah, Filipe is back with fantastic versions of the original song and information on all of them. Thanks, buddy.

The English version.

APRIL IN PORTUGAL (English Lyrics)

I found my April dream in Portugal with you,
When we discovered romance, like we never knew.
My head was in the clouds. My heart went crazy too.
And madly I said, “I love you”.

Too soon I heard you say,
“This dream is for a day.”
That’s Portugal and love in April!
And when the showers fell,
Those tears I know so well,
They told me it was Spring fooling me.

I found my April dream in Portugal with you,
When we discovered romance, like we never knew.
Then morning brought the rain, and now my dream is through,
But still my heart says, “I love you.”

I love the sound of different languages.

@Fil Albuquerque,
COIMBRA
Coimbra is a lesson
Dream and tradition
The "lens" (Master) is a song
And the moon the college
The book is a woman
Only whom know´s goes through
And learns to say I miss you (Saudade)

Coimbra's (of) choupal (small park close to down town)
You're still the capital
Of love in Portugal, although
Coimbra where once
With tears became
The story of "Agnes", (Inês de Castro) so beautiful...

Coimbra (of) songs
Coimbra that puts us
Our hearts, in the light ...
Coimbra (of) "doctors" (finalists)
For us, the singers
The (only) source of love still is you.

This is a very direct goggle precarious translation quickly assembled to give you all a small sense of the original lyrics which is practically untranslatable at least for my English level...hope you condescend and enjoy it a little bit...

@Fil Albuquerque,
Condescend, Fil? All of those songs were glorious. It's more like ascending a clear and lovely mountain and listening to all of them. Thanks, my friend, they were all simply breath taking.

Perhaps we'll all enjoy this one by Andrea who does an Elvis song.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, thanks again for your comments, and I love "the king" doing I Need Your Love Tonight.

Speaking of "tonight", it is time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with Elvis doing Italian.

........................................................................
friday i was kind of busy .
first , off to a birthday lunch for fred ( a YOUNG Laughing friend who just turned 80 ) . it was hosted by his 3 children , and we all had an enjoyable time talking about " the good ole days " Smile .
in the evening there was a wine and cheese party at the residence and i did my best to sample all the goodies Wink
.........................................................................
today was a quiet day and i sorted through youtube looking for different styles of music .

found two pieces that may not be enjoyed by everyone . i thought this presentatation shows that even military bands can play music that's enjoyable ( to me ) .

first a south african military band with a nice jazzy sound

ah, hbg's marching bands were fantastic. jcboy's Bad Romance was good and reminded me of A Fine Romance.

Our edgar made the comments about Volare that I would have made. I remember that one best by Deano, however. edgar's version was the original, and as I have often observed the original fascinates me. Also enjoyed Tell Me Sunday, Texas.

Just had a brunch with the kids and they will be leaving shortly, so let's do a quick tribute to Bruce Lee. There is still a very vivid belief that both he and Brandon's death was planned for a very solid reason.

Interesting, because I chatted with an Anglo man in the super market the other day who was surrounded by a bevy of Chinese beauties and carrying a precious baby in his arms. We decided that not only Bruce and Brandon was not accidental, but that John F. Kennedy was assassination was planned as well. Noticed that Caroline is promoting his book Profiles in Courage.

I was never caught up in the Bruce Lee mystique. Not putting him down, but I never watched any of his films.
