I have a few Blood Sweat and Tears CDs letty. Good group. The girl who wrote And When I Die

Between 1968 and 1970 a number of artists had significant hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Save The Country" and "Black Patch"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul & Mary with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson with "Eli's Coming"; and Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof."

Laura Nyro sang like this:

@edgarblythe,
Wow! edgar, you've become quite the musicologist. Thanks for that info. Nice to inform our listeners as well.

Laura Nyro's version of Eli's Coming was really good. I remember it best by Three Dog Night.

Well, I was going to acknowledge Carl Sagan's birthday, but decided against it.

Instead, Let's do another dance, ok?

I remember when I was in Virginia doing a dance to this one by a dj, and the kid I was dancing with wore out before I did.

In my mind, I can see the entire thing, even what I was wearing.

@edgarblythe,
Daddy What's a Train by Utah Phillips was wonderful, edgar. Never heard that one, and thanks for the comment about Wilson.

I had to smile tonight as I noticed that The Quick and the Dead is on the TV.
As a child, I thought "quick" meant fast. "...from thence he shall come to judge the quick (living) and the dead." That's my quote for the evening.

Saying goodnight a bit early as I am still not quite acclimated to the time.

First, inspired by your "train" John Coltrane. Some info on that great jazz man.

Coltrane died from liver cancer at Huntington Hospital on Long Island on July 17, 1967, at the age of 40. His funeral was held on Friday, July 21 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in New York City. The Albert Ayler Quartet and The Ornette Coleman Quartet respectively opened and closed the service. He is buried at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Now he is playing my "telling song"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tjlz3DYmTw&feature=related

The lyrics, of course.

Every time we say goodbye
I die a little
Every time we say goodbye
I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above me
Who must be in the know
Think so little to me
They allow you to go

When you're near
there's such an air
of Spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
begin to sing about it
Theres no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Every time we say goodbye

Now, Texas, Inspired by you...

Happy to see London with us today.

From Letty with love to all

Driving my daughter to her job, in the last days she lived at home, I am a Rock came on the radio. She turned up her nose. "Why are we listening to this?" she wanted to know. I stubbornly let it play out. One thing I have never allowed is for people to tell me what I have to listen to.

Coltrane is always good.

Thanks again, edgar, for your comment.

Bobby Rydell's Frenesi was great. Know the song, but not the performer. His voice is really good.

Welcome back, euroGeorge. Don't know Young the Giant nor his Cough Syrup either. Once again you sent me searching.

Young the Giant is an American alternative rock band that formed in Irvine, California, in 2004. The band's line-up is Sameer Gadhia (lead vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass guitar), and François Comtois (drums). Formerly known as The Jakes, Young the Giant was signed by Roadrunner Records in 2009 and released its eponymous debut album in 2010.

Thanks, Irish, for the introduction.

Today is Richard Burton's birthday, and here's another surprise.

Thomas Becket (also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London, and later Thomas à Becket; circa 1118 – 29 December 1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in 1170. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. He engaged in conflict with Henry II of England over the rights and privileges of the Church and was assassinated by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral. Soon after the death of Thomas Becket, Pope Alexander III canonized him.

Had no idea that Richard did this.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks again for your comment. Yep, Richard did a lot of good movies, but that one was a big surprise.

Love, Canned Heat. Ah, the hippie culture. Especially like the flute, Texas, and speaking of Texas, today is Donna Fargo's birthday.

First, some info.

Donna Fargo (born Yvonne Vaughan, November 10, 1945, Mount Airy, North Carolina) is an American country music singer-songwriter, who is best-known for a series of Top 10 country hits in the 1970s. These include "The Happiest Girl In the Whole USA" and "Funny Face," which both became crossover pop hits in 1972. (wonder if she's any kin to Wells)

@Letty,
i'll be temporarily off-line - moving into a new apartment within the same building - but it will take about a week to get re-connected - isn't it wonderful that we can get quicker to the moon than getting an intetnet connection ?

@hamburgboy,
hbg, you're not saying goodbye, buddy. Had the same problem when my pc froze up for a week. Love that song, however, and it reminded me of this lady.

Dietrich remained popular throughout her long career by continually re-inventing herself, professionally and characteristically. In the Berlin of the 1920s, she acted on the stage and in silent films. Her performance as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel, directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame and provided her a contract with Paramount Pictures in the US. Hollywood films such as Shanghai Express and Desire capitalised on her glamour and exotic looks, cementing her stardom and making her one of the highest paid actresses of the era. Dietrich became a US citizen in 1937and throughout World War II she was a high-profile frontline entertainer. Although she still made occasional films in the post-war years, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a successful show performer.

In 1999, the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth greatest female star of all time.

Loved her best in Witness for the Prosecution.

Vera Lynn did a version of that one, too, and she's still with us.

Here's Marlene

hbg, Marlene was one fabulous lady. Thanks for the additional vocals and info about the lady.

edgar, thanks again for your comments. I just played Donna because it was her birthday.

Ferlin Husky's Now You've Gone was a good one.

Love the mix of music that we play on WA2K.

Another birthday man. First, some info.

Russell Charles Means (born November 10, 1939) is an Oglala Sioux activist for the rights of Native American people. He became a prominent member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) after joining the organisation in 1968, and helped organize notable events that attracted national and international media coverage. The organization split in 1993, in part over the 1975 murder of Anna Mae Aquash, the leading woman activist in AIM.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, thanks for the comment. That parody of Star Wars was hilarious. Barry Manilow did it right, Texas.

Time for me to say goodnight and I think I shall do so with two songs. First the "Irish troubadour"

Now, because it's Martin Luther's birthday
