@Letty,
I have a record of Tony Bennett doing Manhattan. The version you played is very nice, too.

@edgarblythe,
i really have to get back to THE BARBER OF SEVILLE - i just can't get enough of it .
somewhere it's being described as the ROCKMUSIK of the 18th century !

here is a prodution - somewhat scratchy - from 1926 .

( it reminds me of " winding up " the old grammophone . )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUxCSFud-PY&feature=related

and for good measure , a more recent production :

@edgarblythe,
Lovin' Spoonful -- "Nashville Cats" (1967)

(Granted, it can't compare to The Barber of Seville; but it does have its place. Wink )

@Barry The Mod,
being in somewhat of a silly mood - it's friday night - here is a german oldie
( " what do you do with your knee , dear hans , when we dance ? Laughing Laughing )
with an illustration bei heinrich zille .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndeWMOMY8i8

Quote:
Rudolf Heinrich Zille (January 10, 1858 - August 9, 1929), became best known for his (often funny) drawings, catching the characteristics of people, especially "stereotypes", mainly from Berlin and many of them published in the German weekly satirical newspaper Simplicissimus.

He was first to portray the desperate social environment of the Berlin Mietskasernen (literally "tenement barracks"), buildings packed with sometimes a dozen persons per room who fled from the rural regions to the rising Gründerzeit industrial metropolis only to find even deeper poverty in the developing proletarian class.

His special talent was the scathingly humorous portrayal of what were in reality quite unfunny life conditions of handicapped beggars, tuberculous prostitutes, menial labourers, and especially their children, making the best they could of life and resolutely refusing to give up.

Going to say goodnight a little early tonight. A bit fatigued.

wm, Kiss Me was one that I didn't know. Great! Love Nashville Cats.

edgar, thanks again for your comments and I had forgotten about The Music Man. Had to check out the songs. My word! The Wells Fargo Wagon was one.

Loved Shipooi. It was funny by Buddy.

Irish, I found out that your ancient celtic language meant "...a thousand thanks..."

I love Yeats, but his Second Coming used to make me shiver.

Hey, Brit. The Aristocats was great Thanks again for having fun with us on WA2K radio.

hbg, Fantastic versions of The Barber of Seville. Even the wind up Victrola was good. Love the old stuff.

Hope I didn't miss anyone, but I'm going to play my goodnight song that was also from The Music Man. I like Peggy better than Shirley.

So wonderful having Dublin, Toronto, London with us today.

From Letty with love to everyone.

Good night, everyone! See you tomorrow ... Smile

Signing off with an obscure rock song I loved hearing on the radio during the fall of my 7th-grade year in junior high (which was miserable enough) ...

Joey Powers -- "Midnight Mary" (1963)

@wmwcjr,
Sorry to say I recall it, though I hadn't thought of it in 47 years. Much more innocent times, eh?

How about this one? Guantanamera (girl from Guantanamo). Gorgeous voices and meoldy, sung by every folk-singer or singer-celeb in those days:

Also Jose Feliciano sings it (explains the song as well):

Good ones, people. Til there was you, by Peggy Lee is one of my favorites. I like the other music, too, but haven't the energy to single them out. Here is an oldie - 1957, in fact

Good morning from Florida, WA2K folks.

edgar, Thanks again for your comments, and I really liked Joe Valino's The Garden of Evil. Don't know him, however.

wm, Midnight Mary by Joey Powers was great. Thanks!

Ragman, Welcome back. I truly love Guantanamera by The Sand Pipers and Jose.

Hurry back, Brit. Paul's I Will was perfect. Razz

hbg, Your "old records" reminded me of this one. I know that Guy Lombardo did it, but I recall it best by Gary Crosby. (I think). Anyway, here's a version by someone who I do not know, but like.

and a birthday boy that I have learned to love, but not when I was young. It took my older sister to point out that the songs he wrote were pure poetry, and she is right.
