Good early morning, WA2K folks. Sleepless night for your PD/producer.

JPB, I had forgotten about 1000 and one Nights. Queen Scheherazade knew how to stay alive. Love that and the visuals.

Love Sam Cooke and his A Change is Gonna Come was great.

edgar, Thanks for Deano's Memories are Made of This. Yep, we have a lot of made memories, Texas.

Hey, Brit. Didn't know that version of Lazy Bones by Leon Redbone. Great one.

Shake a Tail Feather was funny, London. Don't know that one either. Thanks for the introduction.

I remember Sister Sledge best for We Are Family, but World Rise and Shine was a good one.

Hey, Taggers. I remember Guy Mitchell for many songs. Really like the "guy"

Hear's your version of Chris.

Hope I didn't miss any contributions. A mite wonky.

@Letty,

Damn, Miss DJ Letty, sorry I missed the link off my request.
Thanks for rectifying my mistake.

I don't know how big Guy was in his native land, but here in the UK in the '50s he was a big, big star with a stream of hits. I think after the war, Britain was hungry for colour and verve and razzmatazz and any product that came out of Hollywood or Tin Pan Alley. Guy Mitchell and his happy sound provided what the market craved.
She Wears Red Feathers
Truly, Truly Fair
Pittsburg Pennsylvania
and so many more. I've actually got a boxed set of the complete Guy.

Then, along came the Italian crooners, hotly pursued by rock 'n' roll.
Who, of those who were there at the time, can forget the impact of Rip It up, Long Tall Sally, Tutti Futti....

A short history of British pop by your sometime contributor, McTag.

A little footnote: I remember reading in a Sunday newspaper, in the 50s, about two new American singers who were being noticed: the writer wondered which was going to make the greater impact.
They were Mel Torme and Elvis Presley.

@McTag,
I have liked Guy Mitchell since I was a kid. Great singer.
I know barry's music and think that is great too.

Another singer from Guy Mitchell's era is Rusty Draper. This song was written by Willie Nelson. But Willie does not own it, because he sold it for $100, as he was broke.

Thanks, McTag for that bit of history about Mel and Elvis. Know them both, of course.

edgar, I don't know Rusty Draper, but Night Life was great. Odd about Willie. I recall Freight Train, however.

Thanks, yawl, for keeping us on the air.

Here's another by Guy and then one by a birthday boy.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks again for the comments, edgar. I am amazed that Bobby Darin did Blue Skies, but I'm also amazed that Johnny Mercer did this one.

I like those songs, barry.

It is popular to listen to the final recordings made by Johnny Cash, and I am not criticising that, but I muchly prefer to hear him when he was young and strong.

edgar, you sent me searching again.

Jerry Butler (born Jerry Butler Jr., December 8, 1939, Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer and songwriter. He is also noted as being the original lead singer of the R&B vocal group, The Impressions, as well as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

Butler is also an American politician. He serves as a Commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, having first been elected in 1985. As a member of this 17-member county board, he chairs the Health and Hospitals Committee, and serves as Vice Chair of the Construction Committee.

Great song by him, and thanks again for your comment. A singing politician?

There's our Brit sounding unhappy with his work.

Willie Mitchell doing That Driving Beat was great. Also that one by The Who carries a great anti war message. Won't Get Fooled again is worthy of thought. Thanks, London

Well, a bit concerned about Irene, but perhaps this song by Debussy will calm her down. It's his birthday. We'll follow with the song lyrics based on this classic.

It will also be my goodnight song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pc7GGQU0B8&feature=related

Our love
Is a dream, but in my reverie
I can see that this love was meant for me

Only a poor fool
Never schooled in the whirlpool
Of romance could be so cruel
As you are to me

My dreams are as worthless as tin to me
Without you life will never begin to be

So love me
As I love you in my reverie
Make my dream a reality
Let's dispense with formality
Come to me in my reverie

Always fantastic to see Scotland and London with us.

From Letty with love and hope for the planet.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, missed this contribution. Sorry to hear when a great musician/composer dies. Love Peggy Lee, but that is one song by her that is a bit discouraging.

Another goodnight to you, Texas
