Kenny and First Edition once had a fun TV show. Back when that song was still young.
Well, here bees Chuck Willis with his take on Betty and Dupree

@edgarblythe,
Wow! what a great song by Chuck Willis, edgar. Don't know him, but I do now.

The beginning to Betty and Dupree reminded me of Johnny Mercer's sermon.

Here is a different version, folks.

Look at the smile on this guy's face.

Quasthoff was born in Hildesheim, Germany, with serious birth defects caused by his mother's exposure during pregnancy to the drug thalidomide which was prescribed as an antiemetic to combat her morning sickness. Thomas Quasthoff is about four feet tall due to shortening of the long bones in his legs, and he has phocomelia of the upper extremities with very short or absent long bones. Crying or Very sad

@edgarblythe,
It seems, Texas, that all of the really good songs keep going on and on.

Love Desperado by Suzi. Don't know her either, but she is great. Good to know about different artists here on our cyber radio.

Had no idea that Desperado was written by the Eagles.

Here's one by them.

Betty and Dupree is a very old song with a number of variations. Chuck Willis delivered a sanitized version. Here are the words as sung by Ian and Sylvia

Dupree was a bandit; he was so brave and bol';
He stoled a diamond ring for some of Betty's jelly roll

Betty told Dupree, "I want a diamond ring." (2x)
Dupree told Betty, "l'Il give you most anything."

He said, "Lie down, little Betty, see what tomorrow brings," (2x)
It may bring sunshine, may bring you that diamond ring.

Michigan water taste like cherry wine,
The reason I know: Betty drink it all the time.

I'm going away to the end of the railroad track
Nothing but sweet Betty can bring me back

Then he got his pistol, went to the jewelry store,(2x)
Killed a policeman and he wounded four or five more.

Then he went to the post office to get the evening mail (2x)
Sheriff caught poor Dupree and put him in that old Atlanta jail.

Dupree tol' the lawyer, "Clear me if you can
For I have money to back me, sure as I'm a man

The lawyer tol' Dupree, You are a very brave man
But I think you will go to jail and hang"

Dupree tol' the judge, "I am not so brave and bol'
But all I wanted was Betty's jelly roll

The judge tol' Dupree, "Jelly roll's gonna be your ruin
"No, no, judge, for that is what I done quit doing"

The judge tol' Dupree, "I believe you quit too late
Because it is already your fate

Dupree's mother said to Betty, "Looka' here what you done done."(2x)
"Made my boy rob and steal, now he is gonna be hung"

Betty went to the jailhouse, she could not see Dupree (2x)
She told the jailer, "Tell him these words for me."

"I come to see you, baby, I could not see your face." (2x)
"You know I love you, but I cannot take your place."

Sail on, sail on, sail on, Dupree, sail on. (2x)
You don't mind sailing, you'll be gone so doggone long.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for lyrics to the old version of Betty and Dupree, edgar. Love those old ballads. I'm sure that the "jelly roll" wasn't Jelly Roll Morton. Razz

Well, you sent me to the archives again concerning The Princess and the Frog song. I remember now that a black gal played the princess.

@George,
Hey, buddy. Can you please do that ballad in Latin? Razz

I know Frankie and Johnny, George; just not that melody. Thanks for the different version.

A couple of songs for the early evening. First another ballad to match our "father of the bride's" and then another that I know and didn't know that I knew. Since my Mama was a ragtime lover, it may have been from a memory of her on her upright piano.

Here's another Frankie, y'all.

First time I heard anybody other than Marty Robbins do that Alamo song. I have a Jelly Roll album somewhere. I need to look for it.

@edgarblythe,
Great version of Long Ago and Far Away, edgar. I noticed that a lot of folks did that one, but was surprised to see that James Taylor did it as well. I remember it by "old blue eyes" the best, I guess.

"...far away.." led me to this song, y'all.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A re-styled version of the Elvis Presley hit "Suspicious Minds" hit radio stations on Monday, part of an album being released later this year featuring newer, more contemporary takes on many of his hits.

"Suspicious Minds" is the first single off "Viva Elvis-The Album," set for mass release Nov. 9. The 12-track compilation is a companion piece to the Las Vegas show "Viva Elvis" by Cirque du Soleil, which began in February.

The new "Suspicious Minds" and the other reworked songs on the album could strike a dissonant chord with Elvis' older fans. But the minds behind the new album said the new tracks won't lose the qualities that made them hits in the 1950s and '60s.

"I can understand why the purist may be cautious and hesitant, but the new album is a unique way to bring Elvis' music to a whole new younger audience," said Tom Cording, vice president of media relations for Legacy Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment's catalog division.

The Elvis machine is relying on fans who never saw him in person to keep revenue pouring in. Last year, Elvis generated more than $60 million in revenue from royalties, licensing and Graceland's operations, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings by CKx Inc., which owns Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Morning Ms Letty,Ed and all WA2K folks.Ed,I heard that Elvis track on the radio last week.It certainly is different than the original but,if he were still alive and performing today,I'm sure that he would change his musical arrangements to suite todays audiences.Cirque du Soleil did a similar thing to the Beatles a few years ago -

"Nov 2006
'Love' is a fascinating reworking of numerous classic Beatles recordings by the band’s original producer, Sir George Martin and his son Giles. The result is an astonishing album that reinforces the timeless quality of the group's recordings; fans will have hours of fun enjoying the roller coaster experience of listening to the album whilst trying to spot where all the pieces of music come from. 'Love' is an astonishing album that pushes back the boundaries of recorded music and can only add to the enduring legacy of the Beatles.
'Love' is also the title of the highly successful Cirque du Soleil/Apple co-production, featuring the music of The Beatles, currently wowing audiences in Las Vegas."

Here's a a few vid clips and tracks from the opening night in Vegas -

Goodnight, edgar, and thanks for the info on the Circle of the Sun and Elvis. Loved Roy Clark's song Thank God and Greyhound, especially the fantastic verse which sounded so heart breaking, then sprang into the reality of humor.

Hey, Brit. So the Circle of the Sun did the same thing with the Fab Four. I am enthralled at updated oldies, but not always certain that they are better than the original.

Two songs for the early morning, y'all.

First, the cat man.

Now, an island song by Leon. (I continue to be amazed at what a great jazz pianist that he is)
