Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man.

I come up hard, baby
But now I'm cool
I didn't make it, sugar
Playin' by the rules

I come up hard, baby
But now I'm fine
I'm checkin' trouble, sugar
Movin' down the line

I come up hard, baby
But that's okay, cause
Trouble man
Don't get in the way

I come up hard, baby
I'm in for real, baby
Gonna keep movin'
Gonna go to town

I come up hard
I come up, gettin' down
There's only three things
That's for sho'
Taxes, death and trouble, h'oh!

This I know, man, is
This I know, sugar
Girl, ain't gon' let it sweat me, baby

Got me singin'
Yeah! Yea-aah!
Hoo-ooo-ooo

Come up hard, baby
I had to fight
Took care of my bid'ness
Wit' all my might

I come up hard, awful hard
I had to win
Then start all over
And win again

I come up hard
But that's okay, 'cause
Trouble man
Don't get in my way
Hey, hey!

I know some places
And I see some faces
I've got the connections
I dig my directions
What people say, that's okay
They don't bother me, oh yeah

I'm ready to make it
Don't care what the weather
Don't care 'bout no trouble
Got myself together
I feel the kind of protection
That's all around me

I come up hard, baby
I be for real, baby
With a trouble minds
Movin', goin' to town

I come up hard
I come up, gettin' down
There's only three things fo' sho'
Taxes, death and trouble

Ooh, this I've known, baby, ooo!
This I've known, baby
Ain't gon' let it sweat me, baby
Woo!

'I'm on the ground, yeah, yeah!'

Woo, I come up hard
But now I've cooled
I didn't make it, baby
Playin' by the rules

Come up hard, baby
Now, I'm fine, I've
Checkin' trouble, sugar
Hey, movin' down the line
Oooh.

@Letty,
Good morning. Haven't heard Art Blakey in a long time.
The Warren Zevon song, Keep Me in Your Heart, was introduced to me by farmerman not long ago. I liked the other songs too. Paul Thorn is new to me. A good artist.
See ya all later on the radio.

Almost high noon here, and London has "wooshed" with Trouble Man by Marvin Gaye. Hmmm, he doesn't sound that the one of the grapevine, however.

Hurry back Brit; hurry back Texas and thanks again for your comments.

Today, America celebrates Columbus Day.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS discovered America in 1492. At least that is what all elementary school children were always taught: "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." Of course, Columbus never did "discover" North America, and the regions he did explore were already inhabited. He only discovered them from the viewpoint of the Europeans. Yet his first voyage did prove one thing for sure, that the earth was not only round, but that it was bigger than he had thought, Eratosthenes notwithstanding.

One of the first known celebrations marking the discovery of the "New World" by Christopher Columbus was in 1792, when a ceremony organized by the Colombian Order was held in New York City honoring Christopher Columbus and the 300th anniversary of his landing in the Bahamas. Then, on October 12, 1866 the Italian population of New York organized the first celebration of the discovery of America. Three years later, in 1869 Italians in San Francisco celebrated October 12 calling it C-Day.

To mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' voyage, in 1892, President Benjamin Harrison made a commemorative proclamation. But it was Colorado, in 1905, that became the first state to observe a Columbus Day. Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually, and in 1937 President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. That's where it remained until 1971 when Congress declared it a federal public holiday on the second Monday in October.

A funny tribute to Chris, y'all.

First allow me to edit my remark to our Brit about Marvin. That should have been, "...he doesn't sound like the ONE who did the grapevine.."

edgar, loved both of your songs to Chris. Particularly liked the jazzy version, "...Mr. Christopher Columbus.." and Guy Mitchell's was great as well. RIP, Guy.

Thanks again for your comments, Texas.

Thanks also to ehBeth for the reminder that the great Joan Sutherland has died.

Dame Joan Sutherland died on 10 October 2010 at her home near Geneva in Switzerland. She had been in poor health since a fall. Her death was announced by her family on 11 October and they plan to hold a small funeral today.

Salute, Joan. The bell tolled for thee.

@Letty,
I once had a record of Dinah Washington singing Mr Christopher Columbus. If I recall correctly, it was on her album of Fats Waller songs. But the version I played was the only one a search turned up. I like it too, so it worked out well.
I did not remember that Joan Sutherland could sing like that. She was more talented than I realized.
As for the opera, I was previously unaware of it.

@edgarblythe,
Well, buddy, that White Bird in a Golden Cage was mesmerizing. I listened twice, and once again, you sent me to the archives. Thanks again for your comments, Texas.

It's a Beautiful Day was a band formed in San Francisco, California in 1967, the brainchild of violinist David LaFlamme.

LaFlamme, a former soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the band Orkustra, and unusually, played a five-string violin. The other members were his wife Linda (keyboards), Pattie Santos (vocals), Hal Wagenet (guitar), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Val Fuentes (drums). Although they were one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from the Summer of Love, It’s a Beautiful Day never quite achieved the success of their contemporaries such as The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana, with whom they had connections. It’s A Beautiful Day created a unique blend of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world beat styles during the seven years the band was officially together.

Fantastic group, edgar, fantastic song. Thanks for the introduction.

So, this may be Columbus day, but I think the birds, white or otherwise, are also wonderful.

Don't know who the vocalist is on this version, but he is great.

@edgarblythe,
Great protest song by Melanie, edgar. Thanks once more for your comment.

I remember her best for "...brand new roller skates.."

I thought that this one by Glen Campbell was a protest song as well, but maybe not.

"Galveston" is the title of a 1969 song written by Jimmy Webb and popularized by Glen Campbell. The song describes a soldier waiting to go into battle who thinks of the woman he loves and his hometown of Galveston: "I still hear your sea waves crashing/as I watch the cannons flashing/ I clean my gun/And dream of Galveston."

The song was widely perceived as a protest song which is also underlined in the original promo video as Campbell is dressed up in a military outfit. However, Webb admitted in interviews that he didn't have the Vietnam War in mind when he wrote the song, as he had imagined it taking place during a battle of the Spanish-American War the time period when the City of Galveston reached its civic peak.

Let's play it any way.

Mary Chapin Carpenter - 10.000 Miles.

Fare thee well
My own true love
Farewell for a while
Im going away
But Ill be back
Though I go 10,000 miles

10,000 miles
My own true love
10,000 miles or more
The rocks may melt
And the seas may burn
If I should not return

Oh dont you see
That lonesome dove
Sitting on an ivy tree
Shes weeping for
Her own true love
As I shall weep for mine

Oh come ye back
My own true love
And stay a while with me
If I had a friend
All on this earth
Youve been a friend to me.

Baby I'm a Fool for a Sweet Talking Guy. Now those two songs go together nicely.

Thanks, London and Paris.

Back to the birds, y'all.

Haitian folk song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR7FF-Gw-Hs&feature=related

and the lyrics.

Yellow bird, up high in banana tree.
Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.

Did you lady friend leave the nest again?
That is very sad, makes me feel so bad.
You can fly away, in the sky away.
Your more lucky than me.

I also had a pretty girl, she's not with me today.
They're all the same those pretty girls.
Take tenderness, then they fly away.
Yellow Bird, yellow bird.

Did you lady friend leave the nest again?
That is very sad, makes me feel so bad.
You can fly away, in the sky away.
Your more lucky than me.

Wish that I were a yellow bird, I'd fly away with you.
But I am not a yellow bird, So here I sit.
Nothing I can do.
Yellow bird, yellow bird.
