The Johnny Cash version of that song makes a fitting tribute to a great artist.
Madeline Kahn was also great performer.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks for your feedback, edgar. I had forgotten about Teresa Brewer. Like Mutual Admiration Society.

You sent me to the archives, and here are several of her hits.

Never much cared for her voice, however.

@edgarblythe,
George has the most fantastic voice, edgar. Love Baby Blue.

Here's a discovery. Today is his birthday.

Some info on Jean Luc Ponty.

Ponty was born into a family of classical musicians on September 29, 1942 in Avranches, France. His father taught violin, his mother taught piano. At sixteen, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating two years later with the institution's highest award, Premier Prix. In turn, he was immediately hired by one of the major symphony orchestras, Concerts Lamoureux, where he played for three years/

While still a member of the orchestra in Paris, Ponty picked up a side gig playing clarinet (which his father had taught him) for a college jazz band that regularly performed at local parties. It proved a life-changing jumping-off point. A growing interest in the jazz sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane compelled him to take up the tenor saxophone. One night after an orchestra concert, still wearing his formal tuxedo, Ponty found himself at a local club with only his violin. Within four years, he was widely accepted as the leading figure in jazz fiddle.

The enigmatic ocean music is good. Violins become my favorite instrument when played certain ways.
Jackson Browne too. I bought some of Jackson's albums, including that one.
Leonard Cohen's song has a violin that I love also.

@edgarblythe,
edgar, thanks for the feedback. That song by Leonard is fabulous. The violin and a momentary bit of flute was a great combination and footnote to his voice, and those unusual photo's were awesome. Don't know the photographer Bessom.

My favorite by Jackson Browne was Doctor My Eyes.

Here's another discovery. Today is Mark Farner's birthday, so how about a bit of Grand Funk Railroad.

mr. waits has been nominated to the rock and roll hall of fame

I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind
I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind
I never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,
I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.

I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the west
I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast
I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal,
tried to steal it away
I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face.

sadly mr. zevon hasn't been

Every day I get up in the morning and go to work
And do my job--whatever
I need some
Sentimental Hygiene
Everybody's at war these days
Let's have a mini-surrender
I need some Sentimental hygiene

Everybody's had to hurt about it
No one wants to live without it
It's so hard to find it
Sentimental hygiene

Every night I come home exhausted
From trying to get along
I need some
Sentimental hygiene

Everybody's joining up to fight
For the right to be wrong
They need some
Sentimental hygiene

Some nights I drive my car
Up and down the boulevard
It's so hard to find it
Sentimental hygiene

Everybody's had to hurt about it
No one wants to live without it
It's so hard to find it
Sentimental hygiene

Some nights I drive my car
Up and down the boulevard
It's so hard to find it
Sentimental hygiene
Sentimental hygiene
I need some Sentimental hygiene

bruce springsteen covering warren zevon

I was staying at the Marriott
With Jesus and John Wayne
I was waiting for a chariot
They were waiting for a train
The sky was full of carrion
"I'll take the mazuma"
Said Jesus to Marion
"That's the 3:10 to Yuma
My ride's here..."

The Houston sky was changeless
We galloped through bluebonnets
I was wrestling with an angel
You were working on a sonnet
You said, "I believe the seraphim
Will gather up my pinto
And carry us away, Jim
Across the San Jacinto
My ride's here..."

Shelley and Keats were out in the street
And even Lord Byron was leaving for Greece
While back at the Hilton, last but not least
Milton was holding his sides
Saying, "You bravos had better be
ready to fight
Or we'll never get out of East Texas tonight
The trail is long and the river is wide
And my ride's here"

I was staying at the Westin
I was playing to a draw
When in walked Charlton Heston
With the Tablets of the Law
He said, "It's still the Greatest Story"
I said, "Man, I'd like to stay
But I'm bound for glory
I'm on my way
My ride's here..."

@djjd62,
dj, welcome back. Be sure and check out Grand Funk Railroad. That guy reminds me of our Polar Bear. Smile

Loved Tom Waits San Diego Serenade. He deserves to be inducted. Thanks Canada.

Don't know Warren Zevon, but I particularly liked the line "...let's have a mini-surrender..."

Ah, what a fabulous song by "The Boss" . My Ride's Here was a marvelous tribute and the visuals were awesome. Try to get that other boss to visit us here and bring "the girl" with him.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall do so with a classic and a sonnet by "the bard"

Ah, the clear moon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtO8BROBuhE&feature=related

and Shakespeare says it right.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Goodnight all. Great to have London and Canada with us today.

From Letty with love to the world.

Light Show Over the VAB

Lightning lights up the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida during thunderstorms on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010. The Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB, is one of the largest buildings in the world. Originally built for assembly of Apollo and Saturn vehicles, it was later modified to support space shuttle operations. High Bays 1 and 3 are used for integration and stacking of the complete Space Shuttle vehicle. High Bay 2 is used for external tank (ET) checkout and storage and as a contingency storage area for orbiters. High Bay 4 is also used for ET checkout and storage, as well as for payload canister operations and solid rocket boster contingency handling.

Good morning, WA2K folks.

Hurry back, Texas, and thanks for your comments. Great one by Ozzie Nelson. Yep, It's Great to Meet a Friend was GREAT, and that's true outside our wee studio.

Well, our Brit has gone, but his music lingers on.

Don't know Sandy Denny, but enjoyed the song You Never Wanted me. Really, REALLY enjoyed It's Only Money by Roland Gift. Thanks for the introduction.

Wow! Loved that forked lightning over the Cape although it was a mite scary.

Dear Karen and Ken. Never heard Solitaire by them.

Is there anyone here who doesn't know The Flintstones? You hurry back, too, London, and thanks for that theme.

Today is Johnny Mathis' birthday, and I love this one by him.
