On June 6, 1944, the D-Day invasion of Europe took place during World War II as Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France.

On June 6, 1875, Thomas Mann, the Nobel Prize-winning German author, was born.

On this date in:

1844 The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London.

@edgarblythe,
That was deemed rare footage, edgar.

Langston Hughes (one of my favorite poets)

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

@edgarblythe,
Don't know Salt of the Earth, edgar, but you sent me on another trip to the archives, and I found this:

"This song is total cynicism. I'm saying those people haven't any power and they never will have." (speaking of the hard working people)

Mick Jagger!

Hey, where's Barry the Brit. Last time I saw him he was petting some pied elephant.

From the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, y'all.

"He prayeth well, who loveth well
Both man and bird and beast.

He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all."

The elephant.

@edgarblythe,
I love that Freight Train song, edgar. I heard it by another group, but cannot recall who at the moment. The ending lyrics go something like this:

When I die please bury me deep, down at the end of Fleenor Street(sp) so I can hear old number nine as it goes on down the line.

From Kelly's Heroes:

For some reason, edgar, my daughter used to call me Clyde. Love that Lover Please by him.

Here's an answer from Fran Warren. Don't remember her at all and don't know if she's still alive.

Ah, I enjoy hearing Billy Eckstine, edgar. Remember when I sent you an apology song by him after making that funny about the fruit cake? Thanks, buddy.

Don't know this lady either, but today is her birthday, so here is a song by Sandra.

@edgarblythe,
Oh my Gawd, edgar, That's from The Park Avenue Hillbilly. I recall her from sooooo long ago in Richmond, Va. I don't think I heard that one by her, however. More than likely it was Jo Stafford.

Well, she lived in Jacksonville, Florida and so does this birthday boy.

Oops, Texas, we missed Iz's ballet boy. Bet she's asleep as we speak
