Watched most of the Inaugural Concert of the new conductor for the LA Phil on PBS Great Performances, most of it Wednesday night and caught the rest of the Mahler lst yesterday. He is astonishing! The program began with a premiere by John Adams based on the old LA film noir, even a TV show the composer admitted to sneaking next door the watch, The Naked City (his parents wouldn't let him watch TV). It was Adams' minimalistic sound with some jazz edges and sometimes reminded me of film scores like "The Bad and the Beautiful." Mahler's lst is a not-so-often performed -- it's always the 2nd, 5th and 8th. Couldn't find the first, but:

Thanks, y'all, for all the contributions to our cyber radio.

Iz, Tai chi, Barry the Brit, Latin George, Mr. Wizard. Hope that I didn't miss anyone.

Still extremely hot here for this time of year, and that's one reason it's difficult for me to respond.

Mr. Wizard, I never hear Mahler that I don't think of a large and vicious dog.

Some info.

Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860 " 18 May 1911) was a Bohemian-born Austrian composer and conductor. He was best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day. He has since come to be acknowledged as among the most important late-Romantic/early-Modernist composers, although his music was never completely accepted by the musical establishment of Vienna while he was still alive. Mahler composed primarily symphonies and songs; however, his approach to genre often blurred the lines between orchestral Lied, symphony, and symphonic poem.

Waking up is Hard to do! I've experienced that.

Today is Moss Hart's birthday. What a terrible life for a man so talented

Lerner wrote a song for him called On the Street Where I live, but couldn't find that one.

From My Fair Lady.

The PBS has the Dudamel/LA Phil concert on their site (great sound on earphones) but still did not find the DVD they offered at the end of the program:

My Fair Lady is my favorite musical. That song is great, no matter the artist.

Here is another song that is great, no matter the artist, although my favorite version is by Jerry Butler.

@Letty,
A large vicious dog? Obviously, you haven't heard the 4th -- no dogs in sight, but it's very winterized.

@edgarblythe,

Wow! Had no idea that Gentleman Jim did that one, edgar.

Mr. Wizard, you sent me on another research project.

Dudamel is the son of a trombonist and a voice teacher. He studied music from an early age, becoming involved with El Sistema, the famous Venezuelan musical education program, and took up the violin at age ten. He soon began to study composition. He attended the Jacinto Lara Conservatory, where he was taught the violin by José Luis Jiménez. He then went on to work with José Francisco del Castillo at the Latin-American Violin Academy.

edgar, you're right about the great songs by different artists. Here are two doing the same one, Texas.

Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer were wonderful, all right

First, Michael Buble

@Letty,
He looked like he was having a great deal of fun, especially with the jaunty sections of John Adam's "City Noir." Did you go to the link for the abridged concert? It has all of the interim intro and interviews with Andy Garcia (who obviously isn't a professional interviewer).

I've already committed to tickets for one of his concerts.

Hey, Brit. Loved R.E.M.'s Disturbance at the Heron House. Never see their name that I don't think of Rapid Eye Movement. I saw a great white heron in my back yard recently. Thanks, honey.

Mr. Wizard, I only listened to his City Noir. Will check the other out later.

Going out to eat tonight, but here is one by Roy Clark. I thought that this one the theme to Soupy's show, y'all.

Hello. I've been preoccupied today. No music most of the time. I took time out to watch a DVD of It Happened One Night (Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable). Had my first beer in about six months (Carta Blanca). Guess I will be on the radio tomorrow AM. Good night.
