@edgarblythe,
Interesting guy, the composer
http://www.library.jhu.edu/bin/n/v/box143item39.jpg

Quote:
One of the most respected popular song writers of the period was Paul Dresser, brother of Theodore Dreiser.

An innocent sentimentalist, Dresser personally felt all the thoughts he put into his songs. One example is the song widely considered to be the best that Dresser ever wrote: On the Banks of the Wabash, now the Indiana state song.

Leading musicologist Sigmund Spaeth once said that the simple first measures of the chorus were worth more than all the rest of his songs put together.

Hmmm. Been doing more research today than I did when I was in grad school.

panz, went searching for Theodore Dreiser and found out that he wrote An American Tragedy. Wasn't there a movie based on that book?

The Mills Bros. are the only ones that I can recall singing "...On the Banks of the Wabash..."

Don't you guys forget to check out Greta Garbo.

Another birthday today, folks. Frankie Avalon is going to sing Venus.

I watched the Garbo video - but forgot to mention it.
I bought that Frankie Avalon record the same month it was issued. Unfortunately, most of my 45s were lost or broken the times I was roving and they were left home.

@edgarblythe,
Hmmm. I think I have some old 45's around somewhere. Still have a lot of vinyls, edgar.

I have been searching for Song of India (the original one) and ran across this lovely song by Renaissance, y'all.

@edgarblythe,
UhOh, edgar. That marvelous tribute to a great actor sent me to the archives again. Hey, y'all, we live and learn on our cyber radio. I had no idea the man was Mexican.

I think the last movie I saw was called Revenge with Kevin Costner.

Here's another that I don't recall very well, but if my mom liked it then I liked it. It was based on a book.

The last scene in The Shoes of the Fisherman.

Quinn actually played a Mexican, in Viva Zapata and The Ox-Bow Incident. Smile

@edgarblythe,
More than those two times -- sorry, I've been remiss in posting here (probably too much game playing, as edgarblythe would know!)

I know it was more than two, but I don't have enough memory to recall some of the others. Laughing

I have not watched Shoes of the Fisherman, letty. It's a lavish production.

Welcome back Wizard of Light.

My word, edgar. Ain't they sweet? Interesting that you should play that one, because now I can play That Fabulous Face(book of course)

Maybe not sweet, but beautiful.

Incidentally, Texas. Anthony played so many different ethnic men, that I wasn't sure.

@Letty,
I have known Quinn was Mexican for years, but I had to read it somewhere. He has, to me, a European look, whatever that means. I will look at your tribute to the ladies of the cinema after I get home. The wife and I are dining out this evening.

Have a great dinner, edgar.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think I shall do with with a birthday song for our foxyowl.

@edgarblythe,
Good morning, WA2K and edgar. Wow! Grandma's Hands is powerful, Texas. Love Bill Withers, too.

Today is Paul Hamilton Williams' birthday, and he wrote some beautiful songs, but I did not know that he could sing.

Also noticed that Frances Farmer's face was among those in Hollywood, and having met Sam Shepherd and Jessica Lang at Mountain Lake, I did a search for the trailer and found a brief one.

First Paul, y'all.

Now, Frances.
