@edgarblythe,
Henry Fleming's red badge of courage was a wound, Texas.

Incidentally, Happy Father's Day

In memory of my daddy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWlUCZAlKKY&feature=related

Here are lyrics that I sang, y'all.

Where did you get those high top shoes,
Where did you get those clothes so fine,
Got my shoes from a railroad man,
And my dress from a driver in the mine.

Don't let your deal go down honey, babe,
Don't let your deal go down.
Don't let your deal go down lawd, lawd.
Til your last gold dollar is gone.

All the pagans are celebrating the summer solstice at stone henge

@Letty,
Summer Solstice is one of Mr B's least favorite days. He says it signals the turn towards winter and every day for the next 6 months will be a bit darker. I'd never heard anyone express those sentiments before and was surprised to hear it. Then, I heard my minister say the same thing in a sermon. Sounds like "glass half empty" thinking to me but...

Some Solstice tidbits:
Quote:
Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.

As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on the Southern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.

Early Celebrations

Awed by the great power of the sun, civilizations have for centuries celebrated the first day of summer otherwise known as the Summer Solstice, Midsummer (see Shakespeare), St. John's Day, or the Wiccan Litha.

The Celts & Slavs celebrated the first day of summer with dancing & bonfires to help increase the sun's energy. The Chinese marked the day by honoring Li, the Chinese Goddess of Light.

Perhaps the most enduring modern ties with Summer Solstice were the Druids' celebration of the day as the "wedding of Heaven and Earth", resulting in the present day belief of a "lucky" wedding in June.

Today, the day is still celebrated around the world - most notably in England at Stonehenge and Avebury, where thousands gather to welcome the sunrise on the Summer Solstice.

Pagan spirit gatherings or festivals are also common in June, when groups assemble to light a sacred fire, and stay up all night to welcome the dawn. more here.

JPB, I know something of what you said, but your additional info was much appreciated, gal. Thanks. Good to see our squirrel back, now where is the mooseman?

Izzie, my mamma told me that she first met my dad at my ancestral home in Virginia. He was combing his hair in front of a mirror in the upper wing just after returning from the war. Thanks, honey, for posting the picture of the two of them. I am the only one who has a dimple in my chin. Got it from him, I guess.

In Houston, what with drought and 100 degree days, we look forward to quickening sunsets.

I also have a recording of Don't Let Your Deal Go Down by Ramblin Jack Elliot, off an album titled Bulldurham Sacks and Railroad Tracks. Bought it in the neighborhood of 1968.

@edgarblythe,
Beautiful, edgar. I never got to know my brother, either, and yet I remember the songs he sang. I think you're right about Jung and the collective unconscious. I tried to call it genetic memory, but that is defined as instinct.

Here's the song that I played and sang after my father's death.

Will keep searching for the lyrics

I did not know that music, letty.
Here is a song Lefty Frizzel wrote and recorded for his parents.

@edgarblythe,
ah, edgar, that was awesome. Never heard anything by Lefty Frizzel but Long Black Veil. I am given to understand that the song was inspired by the lady in black who put a rose on Rudolph Valentino's grave site.

Here's one by Jim Croce about his daddy. His daddy kept things hid because he was Mexican in a prejudiced world.

This is for you, Santa Tomas E Lucas.

I love that Jim Croce song.
My daughter who lives in Sugarland will be here in less than two hours, to take me for a bite. Nice to be a father on fathers day.
