@edgarblythe,
Orlando is perfect, edgar. I, for one, enjoyed Merle's "Silver Wings". Thanks, Texas.

Finally located the facts behind Glen's song "Galveston", y'all

This was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's hits "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman." Webb also wrote "MacArthur Park," which was a hit for both Richard Harris and Donna Summer, and "Up-Up and Away," which was recorded by The 5th Dimension.

Galveston is a city on the coast of Texas that attracts lots of hurricanes. Webb was on a beach in Galveston when he wrote this. He made up the story about a soldier in the Spanish-American war and the girl he left behind.

The Vietnam War was going on when Campbell released this. It was considered an antiwar song.

Here's one great vocalist with Stan's band. A great tribute to her.

That song would not load properly, letty. I will try it again after listening to my man, Roy Hamilton.

@edgarblythe,
Great song, edgar.Roy Hamilton has a great voice. Here's one by ABBA that says it all to our contributors and listeners.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WauFkb4jmCI

Ah, sorry Ann's tribute didn't work. It's a great jazz piece.

One thing, however, that makes it a glorious day: Montana is fine just working hard; Piffka is fine and really loved The Fourth Wiseman. Need I say more?

Hey ABBA, my daughter could sing before she could talk.

@Letty,
Hey Letty... Edgar et al

I love this ABBA song.... FQSis and I used to sing this... we had a massive misunderstanding one time - we didn't speak for months - this was many, many, many years ago now... we were both hurting real bad - so I wrote this song out to her.

Funny - how songs make you feel about things, isn't it?

I remember playing Thanku For The Music on Rock's thread not long after I came to A2K.... I think RH, JPB, Mis and I had a singalong from our various spaces in the world. LOVE IT!

Hope all is good with you Letty. Hugging you so big. Lots of love. xxxx

Izzie, big hugs back, dear lady, and I loved that one by
ABBA. Thanks for the insight. You'll have to encourage your sing along group to visit us here.

ah, edgar, Elvis and Beyonce. Loved it, Texas. Wasn't there a movie, Inherit the Wind?

Well, it's time for me to say goodnight, and this one by ABBA is perfect.

A bit of sad news, concerning Peter Falk.

LOS ANGELES " A court document filed by Peter Falk’s daughter says the Emmy-winning actor is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Catherine Falk is seeking a court’s approval for a conservatorship of her 81-year-old father, who she claims no longer recognizes people. A hearing has been scheduled for late January.

Falk is familiar to most audiences as the star of the television series Columbo, for which he won four Emmys. He was also nominated twice for Academy Awards for movie roles in 1959 and 1960.

The petition filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court states Falk lives in Beverly Hills with his wife and recently had hip surgery and requires constant care.

A phone message left for Falk’s manager was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Good morning WA2K folks.

edgar, that is so sad about Peter Falk. He was wonderful in Colombo and your clip was funny. Thanks, Texas.

dj, that was an unusual song, Canada. Hmmm, Spider Bite by Flaming Lips. That's a song that weaves a web, methinks.

A couple of songs today. The first a memory from Colombo, and the second, another by Ernie Hudson whose birthday is today.

@Raggedyaggie,
Good morning, puppy.Great info on the celebs and your sextet of famous faces are a memory jogger.

I'm glad that it is daylight here because I saw The Grudge with Bill Pullman when it was dark. SCARY. Here is a song and some stills from the movie, which shall be followed by a sweeter poem by Whittier.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p42X7-RZ5T8&feature=related

We'll dedicate this to Tai and her school house.

In School-Days

Still sits the school-house by the road,
A ragged beggar sleeping;
Around it still the sumachs grow,
And blackberry-vines are creeping.

Within, the master’s desk is seen,
Deep-scarred by raps official;
The warping floor, the battered seats,
The jack-knife’s carved initial;

The charcoal frescoes on its wall;
Its door’s worn sill, betraying
The feet that, creeping slow to school,
Went storming out to playing!

Long years ago a winter sun
Shone over it at setting;
Lit up its western window-panes,
And low eaves’ icy fretting.

It touched the tangled golden curls,
And brown eyes full of grieving,
Of one who still her steps delayed
When all the school were leaving.

For near it stood the little boy
Her childish favor singled;
His cap pulled low upon a face
Where pride and shame were mingled.

Pushing with restless feet the snow
To right and left, he lingered;"
As restlessly her tiny hands
The blue-checked apron fingered.

He saw her lift her eyes; he felt
The soft hand’s light caressing,
And heard the tremble of her voice,
As if a fault confessing.

“I’m sorry that I spelt the word:
I hate to go above you,
Because,”"the brown eyes lower fell,"
“Because, you see, I love you!”

Still memory to a gray-haired man
That sweet child-face is showing.
Dear girl! the grasses on her grave
Have forty years been growing!

He lives to learn, in life’s hard school,
How few who pass above him
Lament their triumph and his loss,
Like her, because they love him.

John Greenleaf Whittier

Erskine Caldwell wrote Tobacco Road and God's Litle Acre. His books inspired this song, I am sure.

@edgarblythe,
well, edgar, I loved the song by Bing. I guess it ties in with God's Little acre. Check this out, Texas.

and here's a song about Tobacco Road.

I do know that Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was banned for a while.

I found it most interesting that Caldwell told us what people are really like during a depression. Nobody wants to hear that, however.

I don't know how that link got in there. The song I intended to post was the same you posted, done rock style by the Nashville Teens.

I read most of Caldwell's novels and short stories, loved him very much.

@edgarblythe,
I've put the wrong link in several times, edgar. Divergent thinking is to blame.

I think that I have read Caldwell, but I had to refer to the archives to be certain, Texas.

Let's hear a chant from Wes Studi, folks.
