I'll bet Bull Winkle doesn't know the etymology of sardonic. Kinda spooky.

@Rockhead,
Ah, love that blues, rocky. I will be sure and send you the etymology of sardonic.

OK, puppy. A picture is worth a thousand boxes of popcorn.

Here's one that I've been trying to play for ages. Hope this one works.

@Letty,
It worked and I love it. If you get TCM, Letty, be on the lookout for this oldie, Deep in My Heart (1954), the Sigmund Romberg story with Jose Ferrer and a cast of thousands. Smile

dj, my mom loved that song. I still do myself.

Rocky, I sent you the very enlightening informative etymology. Aren't you delighted?

Raggedy, I noticed that about a cast of thousands. I check out TCM every evening. Frankly, puppy, I think the old ones are truly better than anything that Hollywood has to offer today.

Well, y'all, it's Sunday evening and regardless of how we feel faith wise, I love this one and it shall be my goodnight song.

@edgarblythe,
Good morning, WA2K and edgar.

Loved that version of Bye Bye Blackbird, especially the beginning with just the bass and Sammy. Odd, I sang that song with Bud playing bass, and Sammy's version of Chicago is the one we did ala ragtime a while back. That version is better than any other. Thanks, Texas. Yes, songs of Christmas are beautiful.

Incidentally, piffka complimented you on your taste in poetry.

I was a bit slow on the up-take last evening, because Raggedy remembered when we did an A2K movie on the old site. Love it, puppy.

Today is Sinead O'Connor's birthday, and I had no idea that her childhood was so terrible. She sings about it here.

@Raggedyaggie,
I'm with you, Raggedy. That one was a surprise to me. Sad about Sinead.

Thanks again for the info and the septet, PA. Some great celebs, but since we heard about angels, how about Gregg declaring his status.

@Letty,
Good song, Letty.

When you have 8 minutes to spare, here's a piece (one of my favorites) by one of our birthday celebs. This orchestra was a real surprise. Great sound.

@Raggedyaggie,
Raggedy, that was awesome and the symphony performers were perfect. I know Finlandia. There are two sets of lyrics that come from that concerto.

the first, has to do with an effort to make it the national anthem of Finland, and the second are the ones we sang in the church choir.

O, Finland, behold, your day is dawning,
The threat of night has been banished away,
And the lark of morning in the brightness sings,
As though the very firmament would sing.
The powers of the night are vanquished by the morning light,
Your day is dawning, O land of birth.
O, rise, Finland, raise up high
Your head, wreathed with great memories.
O, rise, Finland, you showed to the world
That you drove away the slavery,
And that you did not bend under oppression,
Your day is dawning, O land of birth.

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev'ery change be faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly friend
Through thorny way leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

What a wonderful lift it gave me, and I hope all of our listeners.

Thanks for the lyrics, Letty.

Here's a singer I've never heard before. My feelings about her performance are iffy. Smile

@Raggedyaggie,
Yes, Raggedy, I would say, "iffy". My friend from Virginia Beach who has been into every religion imaginable, once observed that she did NOT like Christian pop music. Razz

See what you think of this one, puppy, and guess who the guy playing the carillon is supposed to be.

Yikes - The Phantom's really rockin' on that one. Methinks Christine would not appeciate that number even if it is the season. Very Happy

@edgarblythe,
Well, edgar, as you know, I love James Thurber. I think I read every thing he wrote. Love this quote: You can fool too many of the people too much of the time. Nothing was sacred with him.

I have been searching for the link between him and Camile Saint Saens. It's called the Carnival of the Animals. No luck as yet, but we can make it fit.

Here's a clip from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty with Danny Kaye. (Mitty is fantasizing about the British RAF.)
