Welcome back, alex. Couldn't get your Dave Matthews song to work, buddy; however, I think it was this one.

@edgarblythe,
My word, edgar, they've been showing the Wizard of Oz over and over on TCM. Quite timely, that song.

So many things have inspired me today, and I recall so long ago that I told Ticomaya that he reminded me of this song. Great way to say goodnight, as well.

This song is a sad one, but it's by Brenda Lee, so that makes it all right. I like most all of her songs.

@edgarblythe,
Good morning, WA2K radio. edgar, that was a sad song by Brenda Lee. Strange, Texas, the only song that I recall by her was "I'm Sorry, so sorry".

My word, today is Johnny Mercer's birthday and what a surprise to find out that he was a distant cousin of Gen. Patton. Wow!

I read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil simply because it had to do with Johnny. Don't remember much about the book, but I now recall that Clint Eastwood directed the movie and that Kevin Spacey played "the bad guy"

My favorite song from that movie, y'all.

@edgarblythe,
Cool here as well, edgar. Here's a walk through of that cemetery, Texas, and I recall reading "Silent Snow; Secret Snow" by Conrad Aiken. SCARY, especially when one is just a child.

First the walkthrough, then a poem by Aiken, folks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ia9EzwpKl54&feature=related

Hatteras Calling

Southeast, and storm, and every weathervane
shivers and moans upon its dripping pin,
ragged on chimneys the cloud whips, the rain
howls at the flues and windows to get in,
the golden rooster claps his golden wings
and from the Baptist Chapel shrieks no more,
the golden arrow in the southeast sings
and hears on the roof the Atlantic Ocean roar.
Waves among wires, sea scudding over poles,
down every alley the magnificence of rain,
dead gutters live once more, the deep manholes
hollow in triumph a passage to the main.
Umbrellas, and in the Gardens one old man
hurries away along a dancing path,
listens to music on a watering-can,
observes among the tulips the sudden wrath,
pale willows thrashing to the needled lake,
and dinghies filled with water; while the sky
smashes the lilacs, swoops to shake and break,
till shattered branches shriek and railings cry.
Speak, Hatteras, your language of the sea:
scour with kelp and spindrift the stale street:
that man in terror may learn once more to be
child of that hour when rock and ocean meet.

Conrad Aiken

@Letty,
Oh Letty.... what can I say to you... I am so amazed at what you have written... and for everything that folk have said. Never, in a million years, would I have believed how I feel right now. Today, your words sent me soaring so high. I will treasure them always.

You couldn't imagine how much your poem means to me... literally, the world, heart and soul.

I can't imagine my life without my friends here and the support and genuine unconditional love I've been given, never asking for anything in return, ... I'm so fortunate to have found folk who I know are "real" friends. Your poem is beautiful.

I would love to hug you in real-time. One day, I surely hope to do so. You are so special - thanku. All love to you and yours xxxx

@Izzie,
Izzie, it is I who should thank you, dear lady. You gave me the inspiration that I had been lacking for a while. I love that "Stand by Me" version. The first time that I heard it was in the movie with River Phoenix.

Today is John McFee's birthday's, y'all, and since he is a member of the Doobie Bros. let's hear one by him.

some irish tunes
Gypsy Rover

A gypsy rover came over the hill
Down through the valley so shady.
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

She left her father's castle gate.
She left her own fine lover.
She left her servants and her state
To follow her gypsy rover.

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

She left behind her velvet gown
And shoes of Spanish leather
They whistled and they sang 'till the green woods rang
As they rode off together

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

Her father saddled up his fastest stead
And roamed the valley all over.
Sought his daughter at great speed
And the whistlin' gypsy rover.

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

He came at last to a mansion fine
Down by the river Claydee.
And there was music and there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady.

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

"He is no gypsy, my Father," she cried
"but Lord of these lands all over.
And I shall stay 'til my dying day
with my whistlin' gypsy rover."

Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-doo-dah-day
Ah-dee-doo-ah-dee-day-dee
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady.

The Jolly Tinker

As I went down a shady lane
As a door I chanced to knock
Have you any pots or kettles
With rusty holes to block?

Well, indeed I have
Don't you know I have?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I have

The missus came out to the door
And she asked me to come in
Sayin': "You're welcome jolly tinker
And I hope you brought your tin?"

Well, indeed I did
Don't you know I did?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I did

She took me through the kitchen
And she led me through the hall
And the servants cried: "The divil
Has he come to block us all?"

Well, indeed I have
Don't you know I have?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I have

She took me up the stairs, me lads
To show me what to do
And she fell on the featherbed
And I fell on it too

Well, indeed I did
Don't you know I did?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I did

She then picked up the frying-pan
And she began to knock
For to let the servants know, me lads
That I was at me work

Well, indeed I was
Don't you know I was?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I was

She put her hand into her pocket
And she pulled out twenty pound
Say: "Take this me jolly tinker
And we'll have another round

Well, indeed we will
Don't you know we will?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed we will

Well, I've been a jolly tinker
For this forty years or more
Oh, but such a lovely job as that
I never did before

Well, indeed I didn't
Don't you know I didn't?
To me rightful loora laddie
Well, indeed I didn't

I'll Tell Me Ma

I'll tell me ma when I get home
The boys won't leave the girls alone
Pulled me hair, stole me comb
But that's all right till I go home

She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the Belle of Dublin city
She is a courtin' a one two three
Pray can you tell me who is she
Albert Mooney says he loves her
All the boys are fightin' for her
Knock at the door and ring at the bell
And Oh, me true love, are you well

Out she comes, white as snow
Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes
Ould Johnny Morrissey says she'll die
If she doesn't get the fella with the roving eye

Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high
And the snow come travellin' through the sky
She's as sweet as apple pie
She'll get her own lad by and by

When she gets a lad of her own
She won't tell her ma when she gets home
Let them all come as they will
For it's Albert Mooney she loves still

She is handsome, she is pretty
She is the Belle of Dublin city
She is a courtin' a one two three
Pray can you tell me who is she
Albert Mooney says he loves her
All the boys are fightin' for her
Knock at the door and ring at the bell
And Oh, me true love, are you well

Courtin' In The Kitchen

Come single belle and beau, unto me pay attention
Don't ever fall in love, for it's the devil's own invention
For once I fell in love with a maiden so bewitching
Miss Henrietta Bell out in Captain Kelly's kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

At the age of seventeen I was 'prenticed to a grocer
Not far from Stephen's Green where Miss Henri' used to go sir
Her manners were sublime and she set me heart a-twitchin'
When she invited me to a hooley in the kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

Oh, next Sunday bein' the day that we were to have the flare-up
I dressed meself quite gay and I frizzed and oiled me hair up
The Captain had no wife and he had gone a-fishin'
And we kicked up high life down below stairs in the kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

With her arm around me waist, she slyly hinted marriage
To the door in dreadful haste came Captain Kelly's carriage
Her eyes were full of hate and poison she was spittin'
When the Captain at the door, walked right into the kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

When the Captain came downstairs, though he saw me situation
In despite of all me prayers I was marched off to the station
For me they'd take no bail, but to get home I was itchin'
And I had to tell the tale, how I came into the kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

Now, I said she did invite me, but she gave a flat denial
For assault she did indict me, and I was sent for trial
She swore I robbed the house and in spite of all her schreechin'
And I got six months hard for me courtin' in the kitchen

With me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie
And me toora loora la and me toora loora laddie

@djjd62,
dj, I think the Irish gypsies may have it right, Canada. Love them all but my favorite is Courtin' in the Kitchen. Fantastic.

When I was a wee thing and went to my local school for the festivities of halloween, I always dressed as a gypsy.

Remember this one, too.

round the campfire's ruddy glory,
Where the dry logs crack and blaze,
You can hear our gypsy stories,
You can see our gypsy ways.

Time for me to say goodnight, and I think that I shall allow Doris Day to do it for me. I sang this one so long ago. Please indulge me, if you will.

To all of you who still have a little of the gypsy in you, goodnight.

@edgarblythe,
Good morning WA2K radio.

edgar, that was really the Lee that I like. Thanks for that song, Texas.

Today is Meg Ryan's birthday, but one of the movies in which she starred was called Prelude to a Kiss and it reminded me of this jazz ballad by the Duke. If I'm not mistaken, it also goes by the name, "My One and Only Love", but I'll have to verify that.

Here is the song, and also the lyrics, y'all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYqaiEicGjs

"Prelude To A Kiss"

If you hear a song in blue
like a flower crying for the dew
That was my heart serenading you
MY PRELUDE TO A KISS

If you hear a song that grows
from my tender sentimental woes
That was my heart trying to compose
A PRELUDE TO A KISS

Though it's just a simple melody
with nothing fancy, nothing much
You could turn it to a symphony -
a Schubert tune with a Gershwin touch

Oh! How my love song gently cries
for the tenderness within your eyes
My love is a prelude that never dies
A PRELUDE TO A KISS.
