@edgarblythe,
edgar, I didn't realize what a great voice George Strait has. Ah, gringo, Texas. I never hear that word that I don't think of Bert Lee. Remember his "Cowboy from Boston"?

a little bit of info.

Ambrose Bierce, "the Old Gringo": Fact, Fiction and Fantasy
Glenn Willeford

War is fertile ground for the creative mind. In 1913 a writer who had experienced the American Civil War came to Chihuahua in order to see more bloodshed, this time in the Mexican Revolution. The two conflicts were similar in nature. Had Ambrose Bierce survived his visit to Mexico he would, no doubt, have written some gripping literature about Mexican warfare. But he did not survive, and his literary legacy does not extend beyond his retirement from journalism in 1913. Who was Bierce, and what brought him from the safety of a comfortable retirement to the battlefields of the Mexican desert? To answer the question, one must understand what events made the man, especially his service as a soldier.

Here's a great song to begin the day, and we'll dedicate this one to you, Texas.

@edgarblythe,
Well, edgar, I don't know "Patricia" (I'll have to check that out), but I noted that Perez was asked to leave Mexico because he wanted to change the national anthem.

Well, folks, there is the most beautiful full moon out tonight, and I always think of Jill/Noddy when I see it this bright. It's called a harvest moon, so let's hear one by Liza who does a great job with it.

Time for me to say goodnight, and we certainly don't want to slight 007, so since this is one of my favorite Bond themes, let's listen to this very timely song, y'all.

This makes me a little sad, folks, but today is Richard Carpenter's birthday. A tribute to his sister.

Good afternoon WA2k.

Four more birthdays to add to the gallery today:

Jean Peters (1926-2000); Barry McGuire (1935; Penny Marshall (1942) and Tanya Roberts (1955)

Alex, Welcome back, and that Robbie Robertson song was fantastic. Just found out that he is from Toronto, Canada and has Mohawk DNA. What a nice surprise.

And there is our blue puppy with Barry McGuire and the Eve of Destruction. Thanks for the montage and the reminder that "some things never change."

Well, folks, it's getting closer to halloween, so how about a song and a tarantula from the Smashing Pumpkins

@Raggedyaggie,
Barry McGuire's son grew up to record Eve of Destruction also. Barry sat not far from me when I attended my first Bob Dylan concert, which was in Long Beach, CA., in, I think, 1964.

@edgarblythe,
Thanks, Texas. I know that song and sang it with the jazz quartet, but did not know that Bob had done it. That was REAL ragtime. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, folks, I just noticed a photo of Jean Peters, and I think she was married to Howard Hughes at one time.

A lot of folks did hoaxes about Howard as he was as mysterious as William Randolph Hearst.

First, the hoax; next the aviator with clips from the movie.

@Rockhead,
Welcome back, Rockymoose. Your PD was on the "horns of a dilemma" wondering where you had been.

I didn't think that I knew Tanya Roberts, winkle man, but after watching that sit com clip (which was funny) I did a search and found out that she had a role in The Beast Master. Remember the ferret?

The master saves her from certain sacrifice but loses his little pet.

The Emigrant from Newfoundland
2.
Your rocky mountains, your hills and meadows,
Where oft I played on a summer's day,
Where merry parties and happy picnics
Are passed from view with the boys that play.

3.
Where oft in spring on a pleasant evening
To the Blockhouse go or the Battery stand
Where crowds stood eager to watch the sailors
Come in The Narrows of Newfoundland.

4.
All decked with bunting no more I'll see you,
Although it's years since I took my stand
Near the greasy pole or the Wheel of Fortune,
Unregretted day in dear Newfoundland.

5.
Dear Newfoundland with your fisheries failing
Your sons and daughters must leave each fall
Forced by poverty and cruel taxation
To the shores of Boston, a home for all.

6.
Although with friends I feel sad at parting
My aged parents on the pier will stand
To bid farewell to their sons and daughters
Who now must leave you dear Newfoundland.

7.
So keep your sons and your fairest daughters
Employed here at home on your shores so grand.
May the present generation adorn your nation
Is the prayer of an emigrant from Newfoundland.

@hamburger,
We're happy that you can rejoin, hbg. That makes a lovely poem, Canada, and I have read through it several times.

Don't know if you can still listen, but this one is nostalgic and I like the man's voice, because it has a little bit of country in it.
