ah, edgar. I know that one. Guess we're still teaching the world to sing in perfect harmony.

Wish I could locate a song called Harmony by Nat Cole and Johnny Mercer. It's funny and says a world of stuff, with a funny tilt.

A mineshaft gap is a situation in which the Russians are more successful than the Americans at building shelters in mineshafts.

as the bard once said, "in the end, it took me a dictionary, to find out the meaning of unrequited", ok so it wasn't the bard it was uk folk singer billy bragg, but that's not the important bit, the important bit is tonights topic, love gone wrong, or just plain gone

The Saturday Boy
Billy Bragg

I'll never forget the first day I met her
That September morning was clear and fresh
The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes
And the way she rubbed herself
Against the edge of my desk
She became a magic mystery to me
And we'd sit together in double
History twice a week
And some days we'd walk the same way home
And it's surprising how quick
A little rain can clear the streets
We dreamed of her and compared our dreams
But that was all that I ever tasted
She lied to me with her body you see
I lied to myself 'bout the chances I'd wasted

The times we were close
Were far and few between
In the darkness at the dances in the school canteen
Did she close her eyes like I did
As we held each other tight
And la la la la la la la la means I love you

She danced with me and I still hold that memory
Soft and sweet
And I stare up at her window
As I walk down her street
But I never made the first team,
I just made the first team laugh
And she never came to the phone
She was always in the bath
I had to look in the dictionary
To find out the meaning of unrequited
While she was giving herself for free
At a party to which I was never invited

I never understood my failings then
And I hide my humble hopes now
Thinking back she made us want her
A girl not old enough to shave her legs

So In Love
OMD

Talk to me, don't lie to me
Save your breath
Don't look at me, don't smile at me
Just close your eyes
I was so impressed by you
I was running blind
I would fall for every trick
Every twist of mind

Heaven is cold
Without any soul
It's hard to believe
I was so in love with you

Don't say your prayers, don't build your hopes
Just walk away
Don't phone me up, don't call around
Don't waste your time
You were so in awe of me
You were so divine
You would do just anything
To still be mine

Heaven is cold
Without any soul
It's hard to believe
I was so in love with you

All the things you said to me
I was so obsessed
You were always talking talking
God I did my best

Heaven is cold
Without any soul
It's hard to believe
I was so in love with you

Etc....

Brown To Blue
Elvis Costello

We stood there in the courthouse room so close but far apart
You brought along the lawyer and I brought a broken heart
The judge pronounced the words the way you wanted him to do
You changed your name from Brown to Jones and mine from Brown to Blue

I couldn't help my tears from falling on the courtroom floor
My love, they took away my right to love you anymore
My world just seemed to stop as I stood there so close to you
You changed your name from Brown to Jones and mine from Brown to Blue

The judge forgot to tell me how I'd live my life alone
What I would do without you after loving you so long
He didn't seem to care that I'm still in love with you
You changed your name from Brown to Jones and mine from Brown to Blue

I couldn't help my tears from falling on the courtroom floor
My love, they took away my right to love you anymore
My world just seemed to stop as I stood there so close to you
You changed your name from Brown to Jones and mine from Brown to Blue

It Ain't Me, Babe
Johnny Cash

Go 'way from my window,
Leave at your own chosen speed.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I'm not the one you need.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong,
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong,
Someone to open each and every door,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go lightly from the ledge, babe,
Go lightly on the ground.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I will only let you down.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part,
Someone to close his eyes for you,
Someone to close his heart,
Someone who will die for you an' more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go melt back into the night, babe,
Everything inside is made of stone.
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone.
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall,
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call,
A lover for your life an' nothing more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Never Fall in Love
Dan Bern Never

I got thirty six foot insulation in my house
Wear 14 pairs of long underwear
Stick tape inside my ears
Cover myself up with five bedspreads
I spend every morning in an isolation tank
Spend every afternoon high up in a tree
Spend every evening with one of those things over my eyes
Like in virtual reality

And I-I-I-I...I'll never fall in love again

I'll have a walkman on my head every step I take
Put thorazine in my morning coffee break
Won't feed the birds bread boys, let them eat cake
I'll lock my doors click click click bang bang when I'm not awake
When I'm walking down the street
Don't make me meet your sister, Pete
When theres a knock knockin at my door
I'll just sit here on the floor

I run 26 miles a day straight up hills
Work overtime to pay all of my hospital bills
I spray black spraypaint on my windowsills
I'll make a million dollars, leave you out of my will

And I-I-I-I...I'll never fall in love again
I-I-I-I...I'll never fall in love again

Who can I turn to

When nobody needs me?

My heart wants to know

And so I must go

Where destiny leads me.

With no star to guide me

And no one beside me

I'll go on my way

And after the day

The darkness will hide me.

And maybe tomorrow

I'll find what I'm after

I'll throw off my sorrow

Beg, steal or borrow

My share of laughter.

With you I could learn to

With you on a new day

But who can I turn to

If you turn away?

With you I could learn to

With you on a new day

But who can I turn to

If you turn away …

dj, you tell 'em, honey. What a world of songs lie in the theme of unrequited love.

I think I can see clearly, now, edgar.(great song)

Wasn't there a movie with Harry Belafonte who escaped nuclear holocaust because he was in the mines?

He was in "Odds Against Tomorrow", in which he and a white girl are the only two persons they know of still living. They go through heart wrenching scenes, particularly he overcoming his feelings toward white people (She thoughtlessly says things like, "Why not; I'm free white and twenty one?"). In the end another person, a white male wanders in. They ultimately walk away, a threesome.

For dj, and his unrequietness:

TOM JONES LYRICS

"I'll Never Fall In Love Again"

I've been in love so many times
Thought I knew the score
But now you've treated me so wrong
I can't take anymore
And it looks like
I'm never gonna fall in love again
Fall in love, I'm never gonna fall in love
I mean it
Fall in love again
All those things I heard about you
I thought they were only lies
But when I caught you in his arms
I just broke down and cried
And it looks like
I'm never gonna fall in love again
Fall in love, no, I'm never gonna fall in love
I mean it, I mean it
Fall in love again
I gave my heart so easily
I cast aside my pride
But when you fell for someone else, baby
I broke up all inside
And it looks like
I'm never gonna fall in love again
That's why I'm a-singin' it
Fall in love, no, I'm never gonna fall in love
Please don't make me
Fall in love again

Without Love - Clyde McPhatter

I awakened this morning, I was filled with despair
All my dreams turned to ashes and gone, oh yeah
As I looked at my life it was barren and bare
Without love I've had nothing at all
Without love I've had nothing
Without love I've had nothing at all
I have conquered the world
All but one thing did I have
Without love I've had nothing at all
Once I had a sweetheart who loved only me
There was nothing, oh that she would not give, oh no
But I was blind to her goodness and I could not see
That a heart without love cannot live
Without love I've had nothing
Without love I've had nothing at all
I have conquered the world
All but one thing did I have

Hmmm. Trying to recall that, edgar. I'll check it out later.

I guess it's time to call it a day, listeners.

From Willie:

Turn out the lights
The party's over
They say that
All good things must end
Call it tonight
The party's over
And tomorrow starts
The same old thing again

But the crazy crazy party
Never seen so many people
Laughing dancing
Look at you you're having fun
But look at me
I'm almost cryin'
That don't keep her love from dyin'
Misery cause for me the party's over
Turn out the lights...

Once I had a love undyin'
I didn't keep it but I tried
Life for me was just one party
And then another
I broke her heart so many times
I had to have my parting wife
I had to have my party
Why broke her heart so many times
But one day she said
Sweetheart the party's over
Turn out the lights...

i'm not familiar with that song, when i read the title i was expecting this

I'll Never Fall In Love Again
Burt Bacharach / Hal David

What do you get when you fall in love?
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble
That's what you get for all your trouble.
I'll never fall in love again.
I'll never fall in love again.

What do you get when you kiss a guy?
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia.
After you do, he'll never phone you.
I'll never fall in love again.
I'll never fall in love again.

Don't tell me what is all about,
'Cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out,
Out of those chains, those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love?
You get enough tears to fill an ocean
That's what you get for your devotion.
I'll never fall in love again.
I'll never fall in love again.

What do you get when you fall in love?
You only get lies and pain and sorrow.
So, for at least until tomorrow,
I'll never fall in love again!
I'll never fall in love again!

(but here at WA2K, we learn to expect the unexpected)

CLYDE MCPHATTER - "Treasure Of Love"

The treasure of love is easy to find
It's waiting for you if your heart isn't blind
The treasure of love is not very far
It glows like a fire and it shines like a star

It's stronger than diamonds
Worth more than gold
This is a treasure that never grows old
The treasure of love is found on no chart
To find where it is just look in your heart

It's stronger than diamonds
Worth more than gold
This is a treasure that never grows old
The treasure of love is found on no chart
To find where it is just look in your heart

Long and Lonely Nights - Clyde McPhatter

Long, long and lonely nights
I cry my eyes out over you
Wond'ring if I did right
And why you left me with a broken heart

Oh, long, long and lonely nights
Oh, how I miss you, my dear
Please, please, come back to me
How I wish you were here

As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through my doorway
What's left for me to face?

Oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone

As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through my doorway
What's left for me to face?

Oh, oh, oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone

Please, please, come back to me
You've been gone too long

Huh! Looks like everyone's gone home. Shall I go to bed? Maybe not. After all your eyes are still seeing one screen. You don't usually go to bed until you start seeing two screens or you bang your head on the keyboard. That's true but I'm all alone. Well, give them one more poem. ok.

Alone

Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

Yuk! This place is a mess. Sure doesn't look like home. To make it look like home I'd have to throw some more stuff on the floor. Oh! Right. Well, look busy. That's what I always do. Quick throw a song at them maybe they won't notice. I like it.

Angus MacFergus MacTavish Dundee

by Burl Ives

I know a wee squirrel who lives in an oak
He loves a good lunch and he loves a good joke
There's a wee bit of Scotch in his family tree
He's Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee.

Of chestnuts and acorns he gathered a score
Although he has plenty, he still gathers more
And he eats them for breakfast and luncheon and tea
Young Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee

His brothers and sisters and uncles and aunts
Quite often would gather and have a fine dance
And they'd leap through the air with hilarious glee
With Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee

Once while they were dancing a hunter came by
And all of those squirrels the hunter did spy
And he lifted his rifle and aimed carefully
At Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee!

The rifle went off with a terrible blast
But Angus McFergus was faster than fast
And the bullet went deep in the poor old oak tree
But it never touched Angus McFergus Dundee

The hunter looked round, but the squirrels were gone
Of all of those dancers, there wasn't a one
They were all safely hid in that friendly oak tree
With Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee!

I often imagine that I'd like to be
A bonnie wee squirrel and live in a tree
Pay no rent and no taxes and get my lunch free
Like Angus McFergus McTavish Dundee.

What a silly song to start the day. Silly's what I do best. Good point.

Good morning, WA2K radio.

I hope all you listeners enjoyed edgar's nocturnal music.

Bob, you closed with a poem that is dear to Craven's heart. Incidentally, he has been promoted in his techie job, and all here wish him the best. What a neat song to open the station with. I remember the words a little differently, but they are all delightful.

Back later with more music and updates on the state of our station. <smile>
