Bob Dylan sings The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll

I recall Doug Kershaw, and that is one helluva of a stomper. Thanks for the memory.

Had to research Hattie and found this, folks.

"The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" is a topical song by Bob Dylan. Recorded on 23 October 1963, the song was released on Dylan's 1964 album The Times They Are A-Changin' and gives a generally factual account of the killing of 51-year-old barmaid Hattie Carroll by the wealthy young tobacco farmer from Charles County, William Devereux "Billy" Zantzinger (whom the song calls "William Zanzinger"), and his subsequent sentence to six months in a county jail.
The lyrics are a commentary on the racism of the 1960's, which valued a black woman's life so lightly. At the time, Charles County was still strictly segregated by race in public facilities such as restaurants, churches, theaters, doctor's offices, buses, and the county fair. The schools of Charles County were not integrated until 1967, four years after Hattie Carroll was killed.

Rather reminds me of The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.

Here's another by Doug.

My advisor at the University of Virginia once told me to react in kind. Sorry, it's just not my style.

Thank you, Raggedy for the great quintet of famous faces. I'm surprised that you didn't mention "Lust in the Dust", PA.

Dys, it is great to see you back on our cyber radio, and it is true that you have met lots of famous folks. <smile>You might be infamous, but not here, buddy.

edgar, Bob Dylan is always a treat to hear, but I like him better as he got older. Thanks, Texas.

Well, Raggedy, I tried to find "Gotta Get me Somebody to Love" by Gregory but no luck.

Strangely, I found that this song was also in the movie.

Jack Guthrie was related to Woody. I had thought they were brothers, but
Wickipedia
Jack Guthrie (13 November 1915-15 January 1948) was born Leon Jerry Guthrie in Olive, Oklahoma, USA. He was a cousin of Woody Guthrie and had a hit record on the country and western charts with a rewritten version of a Woody Guthrie song "Oklahoma Hills" (1945). At the time the record became a hit Jack Guthrie was in the U.S. Army and stationed in the Pacific Theater. As soon as he got out of the service he wrote and recorded more songs, played live gigs up and down the West Coast and had other chart hits including the "Oakie Boogie", a hit at number three in 1947 and a candidate for the first rock and roll record. In July 1947 he was admitted to a hospital with tuberculosis. He died in 1948 in Livermore, California.

Lillian Gish played Beautiful Dreamer on the piano, Letty. It was her theme in the movie.

I looked for Greg's song, too. Laughing

edgar, I love that song. I think George Hamilton IV sang it as well. I had no idea that there was a Jack either.

Raggedy, I only recall that one song from Lust in the Dust. I guess I concentrated on just certain things when I was a youngun. Razz

Remember this, y'all?

No, Texas, I didn't know that Indian rag, but I know this poem song.

Hiawatha's Departure
from The Song of Hiawatha

By the shore of Gitchie Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
At the doorway of his wigwam,
In the pleasant Summer morning,
Hiawatha stood and waited.
All the air was full of freshness,
All the earth was bright and joyous,
And before him through the sunshine,
Westward toward the neighboring forest
Passed in golden swarms the Ahmo,
Passed the bees, the honey-makers,
Burning, singing in the sunshine.
Bright above him shown the heavens,
Level spread the lake before him;
From its bosom leaped the sturgeon,
Aparkling, flashing in the sunshine;
On its margin the great forest
Stood reflected in the water,
Every tree-top had its shadow,
Motionless beneath the water.
From the brow of Hiawatha
Gone was every trace of sorrow,
As the fog from off the water,
And the mist from off the meadow.
With a smile of joy and triumph,
With a look of exultation,
As of one who in a vision
Sees what is to be, but is not,
Stood and waited Hiawatha.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And, I also know my goodnight song.

Well, edgar, at least Clint knew how to talk, right?

Need these lyrics, folks, because the jazz boys sometimes play around the melody.

Lyrics
Hide your heart from sight,
Lock your dreams at night,
It could happen to you.

Don't count stars,
Or you might stumble.
Someone drops a sigh,
And down you'll tumble.

Keep an eye on spring,
Run when church bells ring.
It could happen to you.

All I did was wonder how your arms would be,
And it happened to me.

Hide your heart from sight,
Lock your dreams at night,
It could happen to you.

Don't count stars,
Or you might stumble.
Someone drops a sigh,
And down you'll tumble.

Keep an eye on spring,
Run when church bells ring.
It could happen to you.

All I did was wonder how your arms could be,
And it happened, and it happened,
And it happened to me.

Good morning WA2K.

I loved Mighty Joe's expression when he heard Beautiful Dreamer. Very Happy

I loved Bing Crosby singing those words, Letty. (It Could Happen To You)

I loved Paint Your Wagon on stage with Burl Ives and the young Mexican who sang I Talk to the Trees.

I'm too full of love today to comment on Clint's voice. Laughing
