Leonard Cohen
Famous Blue Raincoat

Its four in the morning, the end of december
Im writing you now just to see if youre better
New york is cold, but I like where Im living
Theres music on clinton street all through the evening.

I hear that youre building your little house deep in the desert
Youre living for nothing now, I hope youre keeping some kind of record.

Yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
Youd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without lili marlene

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobodys wife.

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see janes awake --

She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
Im glad you stood in my way.

If you ever come by here, for jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

And jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear

-- sincerely, l. cohen

Well, all, this seems to be a rather slow day on our cyber radio station, but I just had to make this observation.

Today is Jude Law's birthday, and I find it interesting that someone once compared Lord Ellpus to him. We all miss L.E. on our forum, and hope that he is well.

I just realized that Jude was the lover of Kevin Spacey in the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I wasn't particularly impressed with the movie nor the book, but the music from it was awesome. Also, Kevin Spacey's character restored Mercer house, and as many of us love Johnny Mercer songs, let's remember Jude and L.E. with this beautiful song.

Skylark, have you anything to say to me?
Won't you tell me where my love can be?
Is there a meadow in the mist
where someone's waiting to be kissed?

Skylark, have you seen a valley green with spring
where my heart can go a journeying
over the shadows and the rain
to a blossom covered lane?

And in your lonely flight
haven't you heard the music in the night,
wonderful music,
faint as a will o' the wisp, crazy as a loon,
sad as a gypsy serenading the moon.

Oh, skylark, I don't know if you can find these things
but my heart is riding on your wings.
So if you see them anywhere
won't you lead me there?

Oh, skylark, I don't know
if you can find these things
but my heart is riding on your wings.
So if you see them anywhere
won't you lead me there?

Wow, edgar. Glad you landed safely, Texas, and we are going to have a strange day today on WA2K, cause I was just listening to Leonard sing Suzanne.

Suzanne takes you down to
her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body
with your mind

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body
with his mind

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body
with her mind

And, folks, for those of you who would like to listen.

I used to browse record stores by the hour. On a whim, I would buy albums by artists I had not heard of before. This is how I discovered L Cohen, Dylan, and several others. I was rarely disappointed.

No doubt about it, edgar. Trying the new is definitely you. <smile>

Another bit of synchronicity, folks. Today is John Voight's birtday and I do believe that the theme for Midnight Cowboy was almost "Lay, Lady, Lay."

Raggedy missed an important birthday yesterday, Edgar Winter, but I'm sure she has a lot to do and we just appreciate her photo's.

From the man whose hair is the color of our cowboy, dys, this song.

Look through these eyes
And tell me if you see
What in the world it is that's wrong with me
Please take my hand and try
To pull me through
I know it's wrong to try
To cling to you
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh..........

Someone take my heart away
I don't think I can stand the pain
Do it soon without delay
I never want to love again
Love again...

Please take these words and try to understand
I can't be more to you than what I am
I've given everything,
I had to give
My life is all that I have left to live
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh..........

Someone take my heart away
I don't think I can stand the pain
Do it soon without delay
I never want to love again
Love again

Ummmmmm.......
You can have my money
You can take my name
They'll never help me
In this long lost game
I gave emotion
But you took my soul
I gave too freely
Now I've lost control
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh..........

Someone take my heart away
I don't think I can stand the pain
Do it soon without delay.....
I never want to love again
To love again.....

To love again.............

Good Afternoon WA2K.

I did indeed miss Edgar Winter yesterday and I'll miss a few today, too, (there are so many), however, I think you'll like the ones I chose today. I do. Laughing

Happy 69th to Jon Voight; 71st to Mary Tyler Moore; 66th to Ray Thomas (Moody Blues); 60th to Ted Danson and 35th to Jude Law

And that big hit from Midnight Cowboy that was sung by Nilsson?

Everybody's talkin' bout me
I don't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes in my mind
Everybody stops to starin'
I don't even see their faces
only the shadows of their eyes

I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin' through the fallin' rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin' off the northeast wind and sailin' on summer breeze
Skippin' over the ocean like a stone

Everybody's talkin' bout me
I don't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes of my mind
Everybody stops to starin'
I don't even see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

I won't let you leave my love behind
I won't let you leave my love behind
I won't let you leave my love behind

Great photo's, Raggedy, and I know all but one of the quintet. I know those are the lyrics to Midnight Cowboy, but I don't know who wrote it. I do recall that our minister's wife went to see the movie thinking that it was a western. Razz

This is not the Knights in White Satin with which I am familiar, but it's a great song if one may judge by the lyrics, so for Ray Thomas of the singing group...

Moody Blues

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I've always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you

Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end

And I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I've always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy is spent

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young

Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right

And which is an illusion

Here they are. Ray Thomas is the one with the mustache.

Nilssen made the song popular, but Fred Neil wrote Everybody's Talkin'. I remember you posting Fred Neil's song "The Dolphins".

Wow, Raggedy. That visual Knights in White Satin was great, especially the flute solo. Was that Ray Thomas?

I recall playing The Dolphins, but I don't think I knew the performer. That was in the days before YouTube. Razz

Incidentally, was the background in England? Fabulous, puppy.

Can't leave out Mary Tyler Moore. Recognize this, folks?

(first)
Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

¾ (second)
How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you're all alone
But it's time you started living
It's time you let someone else do some giving

Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

Hey,nothing's too old for Youtube, Letty. Laughing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAmZF79wvu8

I don't know where the Moody Blues video is set, but yes, that is Ray Thomas on the flute. I may have told this story before, but anyway:

I took my teenage daughter to see the Moody Blues many years ago to a full house at The Civic Arena in Pittsburgh The flight was delayed and the Moody Blues were an hour and a half late and police were all over the place expecting a riot. Well, they were the most patient, sweetest mob of young people I ever encountered. My daughter and I sat on the floor in the lobby area with a group of them who entertained us with rock star/music stories. And when I commented that I loved the incense aroma that was permeating the arena, not one person snickered. Of course, after that, everytime I played a Moody Blues CD or mentioned their name, my daughter howled with laughter. I had no idea grass could smell so sweet. And the concert was worth waiting for. I don't recall your having told that great anecdote, Raggedy, but it is fabulous. What a wonderful time you and your daughter have had.

Hee, hee. It was a woman named dupre and I sat back and did Chopin, Dvorak, all of the classics that I have not listened to since Enrico Caruso.

HEY DUPRE; RAGGEDY LOVES YOU! Razz

Incidentally. When I did research on Johnny Mercer in Music Appreciation in undergrad college, my prof wasn't particularly appreciative.

My Mom loved this one by Johnny

Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer.
Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer.
Lead us lest too far we wander.
Love's sweet voice is calling yonder.
Shine little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer.
Hey, there don't get dimmer, dimmer.
Light the path below, above.
And lead us on to love!
Glow little glow-worm, fly of fire.
Glow like an incandescent wire.
Glow for the female of the species.
Turn on the AC and the DC.
This night could use a little brightnin'.
Light up you little ol' bug of lightnin'.
When you gotta glow, you gotta glow.
Glow little glow-worm, glow.
Glow little glow-worm, glow and glimmer.
Swim through the sea of night, little swimmer.
Thou aeronautical boll weevil.
Illuminate yon woods primeval.
See how the shadows deepen, darken.
You and your chick should get to sparkin'.
I got a gal that I love so.
Glow little glow-worm, glow.
Glow little glow-worm, turn the key on.
You are equipped with taillight neon.
You got a cute vest-pocket mazda.
Which you can make both slow and faster.
I don't know who you took a shine to.
Or who you're out to make a sign to.
I got a gal that I love so.
Glow little glow-worm, glow.

Yes indeed, I love dupree Laughing

Maybe your prof didn't care about lyrics, Letty.

Maybe you should have told him:

You've got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium's
Liable to walk upon the scene

(To illustrate his last remark
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark
What did they do
Just when everything looked so dark)

Man, they said we better
Accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between
No, do not mess with Mister In-Between
Do you hear me, hmm?

(Oh, listen to me children and-a you will hear
About the elininatin' of the negative
And the accent on the positive)
And gather 'round me children if you're willin'
And sit tight while I start reviewin'
The attitude of doin' right

(You've gotta accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between)

You've got to spread joy (up to the maximum)
Bring gloom (down) down to the minimum
Otherwise (otherwise) pandemonium's
Liable to walk upon the scene

(As sung by Bing. He and Johnny Mercer were great buddies. They recorded "Gone Fishin" together. Very Happy )

Raggedy, I love that song by Johnny. As a matter of fact, when I was a bit younger, I did a radio show called Accent, and that was the theme.

Honestly, folks, I thought that I knew music until we developed this cyber radio. I have really learned so much. It's rather like playing my life in reverse. (back masking?)

When I wanted to send Dan Fogelberg to my son, he replied, "Mom, I have all of Dan's stuff already."

Wonder what in the world happened to hebba? He was going to keep us updated on his sculpture.

New Year's Eve will soon be upon us, and I wonder if there will be fireworks?

I did notice that The Rose Bowl will be interrupted by protesters. UhOh!

Well, in spite of sealpoet's parody, I still love the song.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a right good willie-waught,,
For auld lang syne.

Don't think that I have to tell our listeners that the original was done by Robert Burns.

Great, edgar. So glad that you now have YouTube. I cannot believe that Bobby had such a fabulous voice. So much better than "Splish Splash".

God love him, he died much too young. For some reason, I thought that he and Nancy Sinatra had a thing going and that was why he changed his style. Well, I won't go on and on about Bobby, but his intonation was perfect in that song, and I like the altered lyrics as well.

Here's a great memory for most of us here, and that is a lovely lullabye by Billy Joel.

Good night my angel time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say

I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Where ever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Good night my angel now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay

And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark and deep
Inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

(Musical Bridge)
Do do do do...

Goodnight my angel now it's time to dream
And dream how wondeful your life will be
Someday your child will cry and if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die that's how you and I will be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LraZEoRnkPc&NR=1

It's been a long day, folks, so this lullabye will be my goodnight song. I remember being rocked to sleep, and rocking my children as well.

Goodnight,
From Letty with love.

All seems to be in order now, so here is one of my favorites by The Monkees and Davy.

Monkees Song Lyrics

(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone

By Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart

I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone

You're trying to make your mark in society
Using all the tricks that you used on me.
You're reading all those high fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearin' girl are causing public scenes.

I said
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone,
Not your stepping stone.

When I first met you girl you didn't have no shoes
Now you're walking 'round like you're front page news.
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of Who's Who.

I said
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
I I I I I'm not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone,
Not your stepping stone.

Today is the dys's birthday.

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

Thanks, edgar. Here's one for the cowboy as well, 'cause he resembles Edgar Winter, folks.

Cool groovy jazz cats
And country western buckaroos
Classical conductors
And rock 'n' rollers watch your cues

Let the trends keep on passin', what I do's
A thing called jazzin' the blues

I hear some fusion
Makes me wonder what to fuse
Afro, Cuban, Asian
Color comes in many hues

But whatever style's in fashion, I'll never lose
A passion for jazzin' the blues

Disco to hip-hop
There are many avenues
Pop rock to bebop
Why should I be forced to choose

Ain't no fortune I'm amassin', all I'm askin' you's
To let me keep on jazzin' the blues

Retro to techno
Is one example you can use
Where a sample is ample
To turn the oldies into news

But through all the razzmatazzin', and ballyhoos
I'm gon'a keep on jazzin' the blues

No explanation
I've got nothin' to excuse
Without invitation
Music writes it's own reviews

I might be my own assassin, but win or lose
I'm gon'a keep on jazzin' the blues

I can take the harassin', cheers or boos
I'm gon'a keep on jazzin' the blues
There is nothin' surpassin', my music muse
That keeps me jazzin' the blues
Jazzin' the blues, Yeah
