Woodstock

I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm
Im going to join in a rock n roll band
Im going to camp out on the land
Im going to try an get my soul free
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Then can I walk beside you
I have come here to lose the smog
And I feel to be a cog in something turning
Well maybe it is just the time of year
Or maybe its the time of man
I dont know who l am
But you know life is for learning
We are stardust
We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

By the time we got to woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust
Billion year old carbon
We are golden
Caught in the devils bargain
And weve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden

Here's a couple of dedications. The first one by J.T. is for dys and Diane, and the second one is from Mary to dj about his wanting to hide from love.

James Taylor
Steamroller Blues

Well, I'm a steamroller, baby
I'm bound to roll all over you
Yes, I'm a steamroller, baby
I'm bound to roll all over you
I'm gonna inject your soul with some sweet rock 'n roll
And shoot you full of rhythm and blues
Well, I'm a cement mixer
A churning urn of burning funk
Yes, I'm a cement mixer for you, baby
A churning urn of burning funk
Well, I'm a demolition derby
A hefty hunk of steaming junk
Now, I'm a napalm bomb, baby
Just guaranteed to blow your mind
Yeah, I'm a napalm bomb for you, baby
Guaranteed to blow your mind
And if I can't have your love for my own
Sweet child, won't be nothing left behind.
It seems how lately, baby
Got a bad case steamroller blues

Mary J Blige - Can't Hide From Love Lyrics

I'm comin for you,
I aint wastin time.
Cuz all night lord,
you been on my mind.
Hope your ready baby,
cuz I'm on my way.
To talk a real good one,
but let's see today.

I just want to see what your made of.
Can you handle me are you really tough?
Lovers come and go,
so what you gonna do. (Whatchu gonna do baby)
Boy this aint no joke,
it's time to show and prove. (Show me, show me)

[Chorus]
You can't hide from love, (hide from love)
No you can't babe (Imma make you want it).
I'mma make you want, make you want my love, want to make love, come to me
You can't hide from love,
It's too strong babe.
I'mma make you want, make you want my love, want to make love, come to me

Now that I got cha,
this is what I'm gonna do.
Boy I need nobody,
to move like I move.
Wrap your arms around me,
and dont be shy.
What you feel is a real woman ,
probably for the first time.

[Refrain]
I just want to see what your made of.
Can you handle me are you really tough?
Lovers come and go,
so what you gonna do. (Whatchu gonna do baby)
Boy this aint no joke,
it's time to show and prove. (Show me, show me)

[Chorus]
You can't hide from love, (hide from love)
No you can't babe (Imma make you want it).
I'mma make you want, make you want my love, want to make love, come to me
You can't hide from love, (hide from love)

Well, folks. I am a bit confused here. Not certain whether or not dj is referring to his song Woodstock or to dys' observation about Steamroller Blues.

Doesn't matter as I have learned not to expect an answer and I stay a might confused anyway. Confused

So, let's match dj's Pearl Jam. That will be safer.

High Flyin' Bird
Elton John

You wore a little cross of gold around your neck
I saw it as you flew between my reason
Like a raven in the night time when you left

I wear a chain upon my wrist that bears no name
You touched it and you wore it
And you kept it in your pillow all the same

My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms
I thought myself her keeper
She thought I meant her harm
She thought I was the archer
A weather man of words
But I could never shoot down
My high-flying bird

The white walls of your dressing room are stained in scarlet red
You bled upon the cold stone like a young man
In the foreign field of death
Wouldn't it be wonderful is all I heard you say
You never closed your eyes at night and learned to love daylight
Instead you moved away

LES PAUL AND MARY FORD - RUMOURS ARE FLYING
------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.animationarchive.org/pics/lespaulmaryford.jpg

Quote:
Just put a ring on my finger,
A kiss on my cheek
And you can bet your life
I'll marry you in the best side of the week

Just say you love me
Be faithful and true
And there's nothing in this great big world
I wouldn't do for you

Now some folks are so bashful
when it comes to making love
Some folks must too forward
and others need a shove

I studied love most carefully
and this way you can't miss
Offer me all your love,
a ring and a kiss

Just put a ring on my finger...(etc.)

Border Song
Elton John

Holy Moses I have been removed
I have seen the spectre he has been here too
Distant cousin from down the line
Brand of people who ain't my kind
Holy Moses I have been removed

Holy Moses I have been deceived
Now the wind has changed direction and I'll have to leave
Won't you please excuse my frankness but it's not my cup of tea
Holy Moses I have been deceived

I'm going back to the border
Where my affairs, my affairs ain't abused
I can't take any more bad water
I've been poisoned from my head down to my shoes

Holy Moses I have been deceived
Holy Moses let us live in peace
Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man over there what's his colour I don't care
He's my brother let us live in peace
He's my brother let us live in peace
He's my brother let us live in peace

Quote:
Hannah Fell in Love with my Piano

Transcribed from vocals by Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon, recorded May 14, 1926.
From Frankie "Half-Pint" Jaxon, Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order, vol. 1. 1926-1929, Document Records, DOCD-5258.

When I was a little kid down in Louisiana,
Playing with my little sweetheart, Hannah,
Playing hide and go seek among the sugar cane,
When I heard my mammy call, at the bend of the lane:

She say, "Jim"; "Yeah, what do you want, Mother?"
"I'm going to town, son, and buy you a suit."
"And what else, Mother?"
"And when I come back, you know, darling, I'm going to give you some fruit."
Why, she gave me an apple, banana, pie, peach and plum;
I started playing on my instrument for Hannah,
And then she started to... said, "Son"
The way that gal looked at me, I could plainly see,
It was in her eyes,
She wanted me to play, can I see,
Miss Hannah, she got stuck on the way I played piano.
Nice little piano.
All but her my apple, [?]
I wanted to play her grand opera, too.
She said, "Stop it, man,
Don't play that stuff for me,
I want you to play something good, you fool."
Go on and play that piano.
She got stuck on the way I played piano.
Ummm, piano,
Said, "If you want me to be,
Go on, Tennessee," [?]
You better play it, whip it, pat it, bang it,
Play it, oh, papa, play for me!

Spoken:
Now, listen here, what do you mean you're going to take me home?
You know a man and a taxicab is two dollars fare.
You gonna do what?
You gonna put it in my stocking, the money, bro?
Well, you'll never do nothing like that to me!
I can't stand that kind of a jive!
Lord, the last man said he was going to give me something,
When I woke up and come home the next morning,
I didn't have no legs, stockings or anything else!
Have I got another fellow?
Sure I got another fellow!
Where is he? Out of town?
What am I doing when he's out of town?
What do you think old lady Rip van Winkle was doing while Rip was sleeping?
I guess you thought that she was out there on the corner playing in the sand or doing something like that.
All you got to do is one thing for me,
Play it, play it, play it, papa, for me,
Ummm, Hannah,
She got crazy way I play the piano.
Lord, piano!
I want to play her grand opera.
Play her radio tunes, [?]
She said, "Lord, Lord, nobody better come in here!"
Crazy Lord, oh!
Miss Hannah!
She went wild about the way I play piano,
I mean, pretty piano,
You want me to be
Go up in a tree? [?]
You better play it, whip it, bang it, pat it, rip it and play it,
All for me!

Well, dj. I know that the dys doesn't like me, but I have a penchant for over statement, buddy. Thanks for another Sir Elton song.

Hey, hbg. That second song is unknown to me, but it's great, and I think I shall say goodnight with one that Les Paul did. I forgot to tell my cousin, Billy B. that he taught me the chord changes to this one so long ago.

Dear one, the world is waiting for the sunrise.
Ev'ry rose is covered with dew
And while the world is waiting for the sunrise
And my heart is calling you.

(instrumental break)

Dear one, the world is waiting for the sunrise.
Every little rose bud is covered with dew
And my heart is calling you
The thrush on high his sleepy mate is calling
And my heart is calling you.

Goodnight, my friends

Had the pleasure of seeing a live perfomance of Johnny Cash in Boston a lot of years ago.

He brought down the house with his rendition of Folsum Prison. One of those performances you never forget.

Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin' to do

Gonna look you right in the face
Better get yourself together darlin'
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin' at fools like me
Who in the hell d'you think you are
A super star
Well, right you are

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev'ryone come on

Instant Karma's gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev'ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you're ev'rywhere
Come and get your share

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah

Andy Devine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birth name Andrew Vabre Devine
Born October 7, 1905(1905-10-07)
Flagstaff, Arizona, U.S.
Died February 18, 1977 (aged 71)
Orange, California, U.S.

Andrew Vabre "Andy" Devine (October 7, 1905 - February 18, 1977) was a rotund, raspy-voiced American character actor and comic cowboy sidekick.

Life and work

He was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, and grew up in Kingman, where his family moved when he was a year old.

He was not named Jeremiah Schwartz at birth, as it is often reported. However, he did use this name as a pseudonym during his college football years.

He was a star football player at Ball State University, which led to his first film role in the silent film The Fighting Football Cardinals.

Although it was at first thought that his peculiar voice would prevent him from moving to the talkies, it became his trademark and strongest selling point. Devine told people that his speech was the result of a childhood accident. (His story is that he had been running with a curtain rod in his mouth and fell, the instrument piercing the roof of his mouth, and when he was finally able to speak, he had the wheezing, duo-tone voice that would make him famous as an actor.) However, a biographer explains that this wasn't true but was one of several stories about his voice fabricated by Devine; see the link to http://www.froggythegremlin.com/. Devine's son Tad told an Encore Westerns Channel interviewer[1] that the accident had indeed happened but that Andy Devine himself was uncertain whether it was the actual cause of his unique vocal quality.

He appeared in more than 400 films and shared with Walter Brennan, another character actor, the rare ability to move with ease from "B" Westerns to "A" pictures.

His notable roles included ten films as sidekick "Cookie" to Roy Rogers, a role in Romeo and Juliet (1937), and "Danny" in A Star Is Born (1937). He made several appearances in films with John Wayne, including Stagecoach (1939), Island in the Sky (1953), and as the frightened marshal in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). He also played "The Cheerful Soldier" in The Red Badge of Courage. While most of his characters were reluctant to get involved in the action, he played the hero in Island in the Sky, as an expert pilot who leads his fellow aviators through the arduous search for a missing airplane.

Devine also worked in radio. He is well-remembered for his role as "Jingles", Guy Madison's sidekick in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, which Devine and Madison reprised on television. He often appeared on Jack Benny's radio show, sometimes appearing in Benny's semi-regular western series of sketches "Buck Benny Rides Again".

Devine also worked in television. He played "Hap" on the TV series Flipper and hosted a children's TV show, Andy's Gang. He starred in a Twilight Zone episode as "Frisby", a talkative braggart faced with an alien invasion called "Hocus-Pocus and Frisby". He was also a frequent guest star in many television shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

In addition, Devine performed voice parts in animated films, including "Friar Tuck" in Disney's Robin Hood. He provided the voice of Cornelius the Kellogg's Rooster in some TV commercials for their corn flakes.

His film appearances in his later years included movies such as Over-the-Hill Gang, and 'Coyote Bill' in Myra Breckinridge.

Devine also made many public appearances. He struck up a friendship with George C. Brian, an actor and filmmaker who headed the theater department at a Louisiana university. At Brian's request, Devine came to Monroe in 1973 to perform in Edna Ferber's Showboat.

Devine died of leukemia on February 18, 1977, at the age of seventy-one, in Orange, California. The main street of his home town of Kingman was renamed "Andy Devine Avenue" in his honor. His career is also highlighted in the Kingman museum.

Trivia

Andy was the Exalted Ruler of San Fernando, California, Elks Lodge No. 1539 in 1942-1943.
He is mentioned in a Jimmy Buffett song, "Pencil Thin Mustache" from Buffet's 1974 album, Living & Dying in 3/4 Time. The singer wishes for "an autographed picture of Andy Devine", which along with the mustache and other attributes, will make him cooler.
He is mentioned in a Frank Zappa song, "Andy," from the album One Size Fits All. The lyric is opaque:
Andy Devine
Had a thong rind
It was sublime
But the wrong kind
His amateur radio call sign, WB6RER, is now registered to an amateur radio club in Kingman, Arizona, which holds annual events in his honor.
There is a star in his honor in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Website Vaughn Monroe Big Band Era Singer

Vaughn Monroe (October 7, 1911 - May 21, 1973) was an American singer, trumpeter and big band leader, most popular in the 1940s and 1950s. Monroe was born in Akron, Ohio. He formed a band in Boston in 1940 and became its principal vocalist.

He recorded extensively for RCA Victor until the 1950s and his signature tune was "Racing with the Moon" (1941). Among his other hits were "There I've Said It Again" (1945), "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" (1946), "Ballerina" (1947), "Ghost Riders in the Sky" (1949), "Someday (You'll Want Me To Want You)" (1949), and "Sound Off" (1951). One lost opportunity - he turned down the chance to record "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer".

He was tall and handsome which helped him as a band leader and singer, as well as in Hollywood, although he did not pursue a movie and television career with vigor. He was sometimes called 'the baritone with muscles'. He was admired by some and derided by others for both his singing and his persona. He had a pleasant baritone voice that wasn't always quite good enough for the songs he sang, according to his critics. (One said "If he'd just open his mouth further so the sound would come out of IT, instead of his nose....".) Spike Jones' satirical rendition of "Ghost Riders" openly made fun of Monroe, even mentioning him by name in the song. The judgment of these critics is open to question, as Monroe's recordings reveal that he was one of the rare popular singers with a voice approaching operatic caliber.

June Allyson (October 7, 1917 - July 8, 2006) was a Golden Globe-winning American film and television actress, popular in the 1940s and 1950s.

Biography

Early life

Allyson was born Ella Geisman[1] in the Bronx, New York City to Clara Provost and Robert Geisman on October 7, 1917. Her paternal grandparents, Harry Geisman and Anna Hafner, were immigrants from Germany,[1] although Allyson has claimed that her last name was originally "Van Geisman", and was of Dutch origin.[2] June was six months old when her alcoholic father who'd worked as a janitor abandoned the family. Her mother worked as a telephone operator and restaurant cashier. Allyson was brought up in near poverty. At eight, a dead tree branch fell on her while she was bicycling. Several bones were broken, and doctors said she would never walk again. She underwent months of swimming exercises and regained her health.[3]

Career

After graduating from a wheelchair to crutches to braces, she was inspired to dance by obsessively watching Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies. In 1938, fully recovered, she tried out for a chorus job in the Broadway show "Sing out the News." The choreographer gave her a job and a new name: Allyson, a family name, and June, for the month.[4]

Like other musical performers in New York, the 5'1" Allyson found work in movie short subjects that were filmed there. Her first opportunity came from Educational Pictures at its Astoria, Long Island studio. Educational cast her as an ingenue opposite singer Lee Sullivan, comic dancers Herman Timberg, Jr. and Pat Rooney, Jr., and future comedy star Danny Kaye. When Educational ceased operations, Allyson moved over to Vitaphone in Brooklyn, and starred or co-starred (with dancer Hal LeRoy) in musical shorts until that studio discontinued New York production in 1940.

Allyson returned to the New York stage. After her appearance in Best Foot Forward in 1941, she was selected for the 1943 film version, and followed it up with several other musicals, including Two Sisters from Boston (1946) and Good News (1947). She also played straight roles such as Constance in The Three Musketeers (1948), the tomboy Jo March in Little Women (1949), and Glenn Miller's wife in The Glenn Miller Story (1953). June was very adept at opening the waterworks on cue, and many of her films incorporated a crying scene. Fellow MGM player Margaret O'Brien recalled that she and Allyson were known as "the town criers."

In 1950, June Allyson had been signed to appear opposite Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding, but had to leave the production due to pregnancy. (She was replaced initially by Judy Garland, and later Jane Powell.)

Allyson was a very popular motion picture star in the 1940s and 1950s. She won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the comedy Too Young To Kiss in 1951. In 1955, she was named the ninth most popular movie star in the annual Quigley Exhibitor's Poll, and the second most popular female star (behind Grace Kelly). In 1956, she starred with a young then-rising star named Jack Lemmon in the musical comedy, You Can't Run Away from It.

After her film career ended in the late 1950s, Allyson starred on television as hostess and occasional star of The DuPont Show with June Allyson. The anthology series lasted two seasons. In later years the actress appeared on television shows such as The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote.

For her contribution to the motion picture industry, June Allyson received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1537 Vine Street.

Personal life

On August 19, 1945, Allyson caused Hollywood studio chiefs some consternation by marrying Dick Powell, who was 13 years her senior and had been previously married to Mildred Maund and Joan Blondell. They had two children, Pamela Allyson Powell (adopted in 1948 through the Tennessee Children's Home Society in an adoption arranged by Georgia Tann) and Richard Powell, Jr. born on December 24, 1950. The couple briefly separated in 1961, but reconciled and remained married until his death on January 2, 1963, which led to Allyson's effective retirement from the screen.

Following Powell's death, she went though a bitter court battle with her mother over custody of her children, Ricky and Pamela. Reports at the time revealed that writer/director Dirk Summers, with whom Allyson was romantically involved from 1963 to 1975, was named legal guardian for Ricky and Pamela as a result of a court petition. Members of the nascent jet-set, Allyson and Summers were frequently seen in Cap d'Antibes, Madrid, Rome and London. However, Summers refused to marry her and the relationship did not last. Allyson twice married and divorced Powell's barber, Alfred Glenn Maxwell, whom she claimed physically abused her. During this time, Allyson struggled with alcoholism, which she overcame in the mid-seventies. She was married to David Ashrow, a dentist turned actor, from 1976 until her death. The couple occasionally performed together in regional theater.

Allyson returned to the Broadway stage in 1970 in the play Forty Carats and later toured in a production of No, No Nanette.

Dick Powell had been a major television player with his own production company, Four Star, owning several network shows. When he died, Allyson was left very well off and didn't need to work. She occasionally made appearances on talk and variety shows.

After Dick Powell developed kidney problems and died of cancer, June Allyson committed herself to charitable work on his behalf. She championed the importance of research in urological and gynecological diseases in seniors, and represented the Kimberly-Clark Corporation in commercials for Depend adult diapers. Her name made the headlines again when actor-turned-agent Marty Ingels publicly charged Allyson with not paying his large commission on the Depend deal. Allyson counter-charged that Ingels was harassing her with dozens of phone calls daily and nightly.

Alyson made a special appearance in 1994 in That's Entertainment III, as one of the film's narrators. She spoke about MGM's golden era, and introduced vintage film clips.

Allyson had been in failing health since undergoing a hip-replacement surgery, and died at her home in Ojai, California on July 8, 2006. She was 88 years old. Her death was a result of pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis. Her husband of nearly 30 years, David Ashrow, was at her side.

Al Martino (born Alfred Cini, October 7, 1927, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an Italian-American singer and actor.

Career

After service with the U.S. Marines in World War II, including being a part of the Iwo Jima invasion where he was wounded, he commenced his singing career.

His single "Here In My Heart" was number one in the first UK Singles Chart, published by the New Musical Express in 1952, putting him into the Guinness Book of World Records. The song stayed there for nine weeks.

One of the most successful Martino hits was "Spanish Eyes", achieving several gold and platinum discs for sales. Recorded in 1965, the song reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart when re-issued in 1973. Even today, this classic by composer, Bert Kaempfert (his original title for the song was "Moon Over Naples") is among the 50 most-played songs worldwide. Another hit was "Volare", (also known as "Nel blu, Dipinto di Blu"). In 1976, it reached number one on the Italian and Flemish charts, and was in the Top Ten in Spain, The Netherlands and France, as well as in many other European countries.

In the U.S., Martino had eleven top 40 hits in the Billboard pop singles chart in the 1960s and 1970s, with 1963's "I Love You Because" and 1964's "I Love You More and More Every Day" both reaching the Top Ten. He also sung the title song for the film, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), and is credited in the end titles of the film.

Apart from singing, Martino has acted in a number of movies, notably, he played the role of Johnny Fontane in the 1972 film The Godfather, as well as singing the film's title score, "Speak Softly Love". He played the same role in The Godfather Part III (1990) and The Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980 (video, 1992). He recently returned to acting, playing ageing crooner Sal Stevens in the short film Cutout, appearing in film festivals around the world in 2006.

Toni Michelle Braxton (born October 7, 1966 in Severn, Maryland) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and actress who was popular during the 1990s. She has won six Grammy Awards.[1] The RIAA named Braxton as one of the top selling artists of all time.[2]

Biography

Early life and career

Braxton is the oldest of six children. She attended elementary school at Quarterfield Elementary School,[citation needed] and middle school at Corkran Middle School in Glen Burnie, Maryland.[citation needed] She also attended Glen Burnie High School in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Her father was a clergyman, and the Braxton children were raised in a strict religious household.[2] Braxton's first performing experience was singing in her church choir.[2] She attended Bowie State University to obtain a teaching degree but decided to pursue a musical career.

1989-1991: The Braxtons

Braxton and her four sisters (Traci, Trina, Towanda, and Tamar) began performing as The Braxtons in the late 1980s and were signed to Arista Records in 1989. Their first single, "Good Life", was released in 1990.[3] Though the song was not successful, it attracted the attention of Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.[3]

With Braxton's low register sounding similar to that of Anita Baker,[citation needed] Reid and Babyface recruited her to record a demo of "Love Shoulda Brought You Home", a song that they had written for Anita Baker for the soundtrack of Eddie Murphy's film, Boomerang. Baker, who was pregnant at the time,[4] didn't record the song but suggested that Braxton record it. Her recording was later included on the soundtrack along with "Give U My Heart" - a duet by Braxton and Babyface. Braxton, meanwhile, was signed to Reid and Edmonds' Arista-distributed imprint, LaFace Records, and immediately began recording her solo debut album.

1993-1998: Toni Braxton, Secrets and Bankruptcy

Toni Braxton

On July 13, 1993, LaFace Records released Braxton's self-titled debut album, Toni Braxton.[5] The album, which was primarily produced by Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.[6] The first single, "Another Sad Love Song", peaked at number seven and number two on Billboard's Hot 100 and R&B Singles charts respectively.[7] The album's second single, "Breathe Again" peaked in the top five of both the Hot 100 and R&B singles charts.[7] More singles from Toni Braxton were released in 1994, including "You Mean the World to Me", "Seven Whole Days", and "How Many Ways".[7]

Braxton's debut album won her several awards, including three Grammy Awards (for "Best New Artist" and two consecutive awards for "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" in 1994 and 1995).[1] She also won two American Music Awards (for "Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist", "Favorite New Adult Contemporary Artist")[1] in 1994 and another one in 1995 (for "Favorite Soul/R&B Album").[1] Toni Braxton was certified 8x Platinum and has sales of over 10 million worldwide.[8][3]

Secrets

In 1996, Braxton released her second and most successful album, Secrets.[9] Braxton has said about the album: "The motivation for this album was to include a little bit of everything. Our aim was to come up with material that would have a familiar 'feel' to the people who bought the first album without being musically redundant."[10] Along with Babyface, Braxton also worked with R. Kelly, Tony Rich, and David Foster on the album.[11] Braxton was the co-executive producer of the album and co-wrote two of its songs, including the 1997 single "How Could an Angel Break My Heart" which was also later included on Diana Princess of Wales Tribute, a Princess Diana memorial album.[12]

With help from the album's first single, "You're Makin' Me High" (which became Braxton's first number one hit on the Hot 100 singles chart),[7] the album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart.[13] "You're Makin' Me High" also topped the R&B singles chart for two weeks[7] and saw similar success in Europe and Asia. The album's second single, "Un-Break My Heart" (written by Diane Warren) - which would later become the singer's signature song[14] - became the biggest hit of her career spending eleven weeks at number one on the Hot 100[3] and also topping the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart for eleven weeks and the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart for four weeks.

[15] Other singles from the album included the double-side "I Don't Want To"/"I Love Me Some Him" (which peaked at number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart)[7] and "How Could an Angel Break My Heart" which featured Kenny G, whom Braxton later toured with.[16]

Braxton topped the Billboard Year-End Charts as the "Top Hot 100 Singles Artist - Female",[17] "Top R&B Artist - Female (singles and albums)",[15] "Top Hot R&B Singles Artist - Female",[15] "Top Hot Dance Club Play Artist", and "Top Hot Adult Contemporary Artist", while "Un-Break My Heart" became the "Top Hot Dance Club Play Single" and "Top Hot Adult Contemporary Track" of the year. She won two Grammy Awards; one for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance"[1] and "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" and two American Music Awards for "Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist" and "Favorite Soul/R&B Album".[1]

1998 Bankruptcy

In 1998, the five-time Grammy winner filed for Chapter 7 protection from a reported $3.9 million debt. All of her personal household possessions were tagged and marked for sale to pay off her creditors, including her prestigious awards. The humiliating and highly publicized bankruptcy taught her a lesson, she says. In the middle of the bankruptcy proceedings, Braxton was able to pursue her acting dreams when she was offered the role of "Belle" in Disney's musical, Beauty and the Beast, a role she played on Broadway from September through December 1998.[15]

1999-2002: The Heat and More Than a Woman

In early 1999, Braxton and LaFace resolved their legal conflict. Issued with a brand new contract worth a reported $25 million, a satisfied Braxton continued to record for the label. Though the legalities with her LaFace and Arista subsided, Braxton saw a steep sales decline with her forthcoming releases with the label.

The Heat

In January 2000, LaFace Records released "He Wasn't Man Enough", the first single from Braxton's third studio album, The Heat. By June, the song peaked at number two on the Hot 100 chart. Braxton's music video for "He Wasn't Man Enough", which also featured actress Robin Givens, was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards including "Best Female Video" and "Best R&B Video" and a Billboard Music Video Award for "Best R&B Clip of the Year".

The Heat, meanwhile, was released on April 26,2000. Debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart with first week sales of 205,000, it remained in the top 20 for fifteen consecutive weeks. Braxton again worked with producers Babyface and Foster; also included in the staple were Rodney Jerkins, and new beau musician Keri Lewis. Braxton herself also took a more hands-on approach, co-writing and co-producing a handful of the tracks. "Gimme Some", a track on "The Heat", featured a rap verse from TLC star Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes.

The albums second single, "Just Be a Man About It", peaked at number thirty-two on the Hot 100 and number six on the R&B Charts. The third single, "Spanish Guitar", peaked at number ninety-eight on the Hot 100 and number one on the Hot Dance & Club charts. The fourth single, Maybe, peaked at seventy-four on the R&B charts all together missing the Hot 100.

By the end of the year, The Heat was certified 2x platinum. Also in February 2000, Braxton performed along side Enrique Inglesias and Christina Aguilera during the Super Bowl Halftime show.

Braxton topped the Billboard Year-End Charts as the "Top R&B/Hip-Hop Artist - Female", "Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Artist - Female", and "Top Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks Artist - Female". She also received the 2000 "Aretha Franklin Award" for "Entertainer of the Year" at the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Braxton also picked up her sixth grammy for "He Wasn't Man Enough" which won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B/Rap Vocal Performance.

While gearing up for the release of her fourth studio album, Braxton discovered she was pregnant with her second child. Knowing that she wouldn't be able to promote the album properly, she unsuccessfully lobbied to get the label to postpone its release until after she was to give birth. Subsequently, the album was released as planned and received very little promotion from the label or Braxton herself, due to a complicated pregnancy that confined her to bed rest. Braxton accused the company of being unwilling to compromise and punishing her from not putting her career over family.

On the show VH1 Inside Out - Family Comes First, she documented the hardships of being pregnant with her second child at the same time as promoting an album.

More Than a Woman

In November 2002, Braxton's fourth studio album More Than a Woman was released. Opening to an instant commercial disappointment, the album peaked at number thirteen, with first week sales of 95,000. The first single, the The Neptunes-produced, "Hit the Freeway", failed at radio and peaked at number eighty-six on the Hot 100. The three singles that followed ("Lies, Lies, Lies", "Give It Back", and "A Better Man") also failed to make a dent and missed the Hot 100 completely.

Prior to the release of the album, a dispute erupted between Braxton and Irv Gotti when he played a rough cut of "No More Love", a song that he produced for the album that was to be the first single. Disapproving of Gotti broadcasting the unfinished track, Braxton withheld it from being released. The same year, Braxton was further annoyed when rapper Jay-Z used the same sample of 2Pac's "Me And My Girlfriend" that she had already used on her track "Me & My Boyfriend" for his and Beyonce's "'03 Bonnie & Clyde". Furious, Braxton lashed out in a radio interview, accusing Jay-Z and producer Kanye West of taking money out of her children's college fund.

Many fans, and allegedly Braxton herself, considered this to be her worst album. Unlike her previous releases, with More Than a Woman, Braxton delved into hip hop with a bevy of guest rappers including Baby and Loon. The album has sold 435,000 copies in the US, falling short of expectations.

2003-2006: Move to Blackground and Libra

In April 2003, Braxton abruptly left Arista Records, having been there for fourteen years, and immediately signed with Blackground Records ?- headed by Barry Hankerson, her manager at the time. The change of scenery, however, did not ultimately help her recording career. As had been the case during her final years at Arista ?- Braxton's fifth album, and first release on Blackground, Libra was released with scant promotion and accumulated poor sales.

Libra

In April 2005, Braxton's new label, Blackground/Universal, released "Please" ?- the first single from her forthcoming fifth album, Libra. The album was originally planned for a June release, but it was pushed back several times and was finally issued on September 27. Unfortunately for Braxton, her troubles with weak album promotion and lack of label commitment weren't over. "Please" peaked at number thirty-six on Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Tracks Chart, while altogether missing the Hot 100. The album lacked promotion by Blackground, caused it to go under the radar of many.

Despite this, Libra still managed to debut at number four on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart selling 114,593 copies in the first week. Libra also peaked at number two on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums; on November 4, 2005 the album was certified Gold by RIAA for shipments of 500,000 copies. Although that is strong for an album with little to no promotion, it became yet another commercial disappointment for Braxton.

The albums second single, "Trippin' (That's the Way Love Works)" received less airplay and peaked at number sixty-seven on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Tracks Chart. The failure was ascribed to the non-video presence of the single and lack of label support. The album was certified gold in late 2005 and has since sold 431,000 copies.[18]

Almost immediately after Libra's release, Blackground halted promotion of the album and later scrapped plans for a re-release. An upset portion of Braxton's fanbase created an online petition to encourage J Records to sign her. Braxton's fans later hoped that "I Wanna Be (Your Baby)" would be a next single off from Libra due to her performing at numerous events, including "Good Morning America" in December 2005, but it was not to be.[citation needed]

Braxton, meanwhile, recorded a song with Il Divo titled "The Time of Our Lives". The song was used as the official 2006 FIFA World Cup anthem and was performed at the championship's opening day in Berlin, Germany on June 9 The song was also performed at the closing ceremonies making Toni Braxton and II Divo the first artists to be asked perform for the opening and closing ceremonies.[19] The song peaked at #17 in Germany. As a result Edel Records decided to re-release Libra in Germany, including a new album cover, artwork and the new anthem.

Braxton made an appearance on the season finale of American Idol 5 where she performed Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto" with soon-to-be winner Taylor Hicks.[20]

Toni Braxton: Revealed

On May 19, 2006, the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas announced that Braxton will replace Wayne Newton as the casino's new headlining act starting August 3, 2006. The show, "Toni Braxton: Revealed", will be performed six nights a week and run through March 2007. Later she confirmed that she was extending her show through August 2007. The show has become the first headlining show from an African American performer in Vegas to enter the top 10 Vegas show's charting. Due to the success of the show, it has been reported that Toni will extend her show through February 2008.

2007: Departure from Blackground

Braxton has been released from her contract with Blackground after a number of disputes with former manager Barry Hankerson.[21]

On January 12, 2007, Braxton filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan against Barry Hankerson for $10 million, alleging "fraud, deception and double dealing" in the matter of mismanaging and destroying her relationship with Arista Records.[22] According to Braxton, Hankerson placed his own personal financial interests ahead of hers during the management of her recording career by using "underhanded double-talk" to compromise and destroy her relationship with Arista Records to lure her to his Blackground label. Braxton alleged that Hankerson told Arista that "[she] no longer wanted to record for Arista," while at the same time telling her that "Arista was not interested in working with her anymore," which, according to her, were false statements on both ends.[22] Braxton also accused Hankerson of failing to send to her on request copies of accounting statements, lying about deals that he made on her behalf and engaging in a vendetta against her by refusing to provide information to other managers that she sought to hire to manage her career.[22] It was also announced that Braxton would be parting ways with Blackground Records after just one album. The suit has been settled.[23]

2007- Current: New Album..

Recently on The Montel Williams Show she revealed that she plans on releasing a new album around March 2008.[24] In an interview with Groovevolt.com Braxton said "I've been recording on my own. I went down to the studio recently, and just laid down the idea. I just don't want to forget it." Still, she won't re-record anything from Libra, and will never re-sing anything from Blackground. "I may sing a few songs on tour," she said. "There is a song, 'I Wanna Be (Your Baby),' that was dedicated to Diezel. I will always sing that song.".[25] "On the next album, I will not be doing any hip-hop. Maybe as a guest on other albums. I would love to work with Michael Buble. I would love to work with Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison again, and maybe Ne-Yo. I really like his style." She added that she did not know if her husband would be working with her on the next album. "I may try something totally different this time around." Still, she left the door open, adding, "Of course, if he has a hot track, it will be on the album."[25] She is currently still unsigned to a record label and revealed that she has been meeting with label heads.

Personal life

Braxton met musician Keri Lewis in 1997, when the group Mint Condition (which he was a member of at that time) opened up for her while she was on tour.[26] On April 21, 2001, they married.[26] On December 2, 2001, she gave birth to their first child,[27] a son named Denim Cole Braxton-Lewis. The couple's second son, Diezel Ky Braxton-Lewis, was born on March 31, 2003.[27] The couple currently lives in the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.

In an October 2006 concert at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was reported that Braxton broke down in tears discussing her son, Diezel, who was recently diagnosed with autism.[28] Braxton has been outspoken regarding her doctor's failure to diagnose Diezel's condition earlier, contending that if he had been diagnosed earlier, he could have been helped. [29] As of August 2007 rumors surfaced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Toni stated to Access Hollywood that the breast cancer rumors were false and that her health is in great condition.

Acting career

Braxton has appeared on two Disney Broadway shows: "Beauty and the Beast" (as Belle)[30] in 1998 and "Aida" (as Aida)[31] in 2003. Her role in "Beauty and the Beast" marked the first time an African American commanded the leading role of Belle. It also marked the first time an African American female would star in a disney musical on broadway, making Toni the first African American female to star in a disney musical on broadway.[32] In 2001, she made her acting debut in the feature film Kingdom Come.[33] In August 2005, Braxton announced that she would be shooting a sitcom pilot for The WB's fall 2006 line-up, though plans to put the show into full-production fell through when The WB announced it would cease to exist in fall 2006 (as part of a merger with UPN to form The CW).[34]

Oops is right, Bob. Love it, hawkman, and once again thanks for the great bio's.

Until our Raggedy arrives, Let's hear "Spanish Eyes" by that Italian who was, of course, the Frank Sinatra personna in the Godfather.

Blue Spanish eyes,
Teardrops are falling from your Spanish eyes
Please, please don't cry.
This is just adios and not goodbye.

Soon I'll return.
Bringing you all the love your heart can hold.
Please say Si Si,
Say you and your Spanish eyes will wait for me.

Blue Spanish eyes;
Prettiest eyes in all of Mexico.
True Spanish eyes:
Please smile for me once more before I go.
Soon I'll return.
Bringing you all the love your heart can hold.
Please say Si Si,
Say you and your Spanish eyes will wait for me.

Spanish eyes wait for me, say Si Si!

Incidentally, Wikipedia. That should be "sang". Razz

Oh, I just have to be here today to wish Al Martino a Happy Birthday. He not only autographed a record for me, (of course, he was promoting his record at the National Record Mart, but that's beside the point Laughing ), he wrote my daughter a sweet note on a separate piece of paper. I love the way he sings "Dear Heart".

Ghost) Riders In the Sky
Vaughn Monroe

Peak Billboard position # 1 in 1949
Monroe may not have sung it precisely this way but a recording by him was not
available so the words and music herein are taken from the sheet music as written
by Stan Jones
Monroes' version, as well as competing versions by Peggy Lee (# 2), Bing Crosby
(#14), and Burl Ives (# 21) were all charted as just "Riders In the Sky"
Later, The Ramrods took it to # 30 in 1961 with the parenthetical (Ghost) added,
as did the Baja Marimba Band (#52 in 1966) and The Outlaws (#31 in 1981)
Lawrence Welk used the original title on his # 87 in 1961.

An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
A'plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breaths he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, and shirts all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they ain't caught them yet
They've got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin' fire, as they ride on, hear their cry

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky

As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a' ridin' on our range"
"Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride"
"A-tryin' to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies."

Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
Ghost riders in the sky
