You know, Bob. I actually did dance to that very song with a young man named Elmore. (can't remember his first name). I outlasted him. I love to dance. It was part of the gimmick when I sang. No one had to push me on the dance floor.

Here's an animal lover item:

A concerned group who didn't want Nevada to sell the wild mustangs for dog food, saved the animals, a part of American history, by adopting them.

Hoorah for the horsey set!

Beautiful Jim Key: The Book

Beautiful Jim Key
By Mim Eichler Rivas
Book Jacket Copy for February 2005 Launch

For close to a century, a majestic chapter of American history has been buried in an obscure grave in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Now at last comes the unearthing of the remarkable true saga - Beautiful Jim Key, the one-time ugly d uckling of a scrub-colt who became one of the most heralded celebrities of his day Ð a beloved hero who, together with his teacher, the iconoclastic Dr. William Key, helped launch the modern animal rights movement at the dawn of the 20 th Century.

Famous neither for his beauty nor his speed, the bay stallion captured the heartsof the American public with his exceptional intelligence. Said to have an i.q. equivalent to a human sixth grader, Jim exploded onto the national scene in 1897 by demonstrating inexplicable abilities to read, write, spell, do mathematics, tell time, sort mail, use a cash register and a telephone, cite Bible passages, and debate politics. For the next nine years, he performed in nation-wide expositions and world's fairs to wildly receptive crowds, smashing box office records, overcoming hurdles of prejudice and skepticism, all the while winning rapturous praise from the press and such leaders as President McKinley and Booker T. Washington.

In this spell-binding account, Jim Key's astonishing journey is coupled with that of his trainer and best friend, Dr. William Key Ð a self-taught veterinarian, former slave, Civil War veteran, prominent Black entrepreneur, and one of the most renowned horse whisperers of his time Ð a man who shunned all force in training horses, instead relying on kindness. At long last, masterful storyteller and best-selling author Mim Eichler Rivas returns two cultural icons their due, unraveling not only the mystery of their disappearance but examining how, thanks to this rare and intimate relationship between horse and man, championed by promoter and humane activist Albert R. Rogers, a dramatic shift took place in the public mind that made kindness to animals a cornerstone of modern civilization. Unveiled against the backdrop of American history, this is their incredible tale.

What an exceptional summary, Bob. I had always thought that horses were tiny brained. Isn't it amazing what can happen when animal and man bond?

I was trying to remember the psychologist who purposed the simple thesis that in accustoming wild horses to the saddle, one must go about doing it one step at a time. Oh, my. More research. AHA! Thornburg, but I'll have to verify that.

I often wonder if man could learn something from the gentle approach, listeners.

Absolutely! When I first started riding (near the dawn of civilization) my favorite horse, a gray gelding named Jimmy, would often shake his head wondering how long it would take him to teach me. He was a quirky horse and not everyone was allowed to ride him. He knew every trick in the book and you never knew which one he'd pull that day. But we came to an understanding and we each liked the other. Kindred spirits.

Bob, I can picture that gelding as we speak. Dogs are much the same way. My Domino, an American eskimo, hated everyone but me. He had my number, too. It didn't make any difference how many wonderfully innovative pens that I created, he could dig out of any of them, and when I tried to assume a commanding voice to call him back, he would turn around, grin at me, and keep running. That quirky aspect cost him his life.

On, ehBeth's thread concerning The Prince in Toronto, she talked about the fact that one of her dogs was a dog, dog. I loved that description.

Well, listeners. I do believe that I must take a brief respite.

(no wonder that I referred to you as the cowboy from Boston, Bob)

If I was a gelding I would be very resentful. These horses are saints.

McTag, you are certainly full of wit and wisdom today. Is he not listeners?

Here's a poser. If McTag were a horse, what would he be?

Well, my goodness. There's the Mass Man. Hee Hee

Maybe we could settle on half Arabian; half English.

Better a gelding than:

Here comes those silver celestial horses
Rays of the moon in the mountain air
I'm steeped in the steam of the last wild hot spring
Maybe I'm melting but I don't care

There's darkness in the canyon
But the Light comes pounding through
For me and for you

Tomorrow may be a hissing blowtorch
Maybe a silken sky shaken by the wind
The world's in the wake of those whispering horses
But there's always a pillar of cloud on the valley's rim

There's darkness in the canyon
But the Light comes pounding through
For me and for you

Still river full of the depths of the candles
Burning for the free ones riding on the other shore
Even at the heart of these breathing shadows
You can feel us gathering at the door

There's darkness in the canyon
But the Light comes pounding through
For me and for you

For me and for you

Actually, radio fans, that's quite a lovely song by Bruce Cockburn

Am I the only one here who is totally bewildered by the fact that, in the midst of a serious recession, with the country at war in Asia, the US Congress makes headlines by trying to interfere in what should be a private family matter and by sticking its nose into the knotty question of whether ballplayers use steroids? For the luvva... let's find them some honest work, folks.

She had some horses.

She had horses who were bodies of sand.
She had horses who were maps drawn of blood.
She had horses who were skins of ocean water.
She had horses who were the blue air of sky.
She had horses who were fur and teeth.
She had horses who were clay and would break.
She had horses who were splintered red cliff.

She had some horses.

She had horses with full, brown thighs.
She had horses who laughed too much.
She had horses who threw rocks at glass houses.
She had horses who licked razor blades.

She had some horses.

She had horses who danced in their mothers' arms.
She had horses who thought they were the sun and their bodies shone and burned like stars.
She had horses who waltzed nightly on the moon.
She had horses who were much too shy, and kept quiet in stalls of their own making.

She had some horses.

She had horses who liked Creek Stomp Dance songs.
She had horses who cried in their beer.
She had horses who spit at male queens who made them afraid of themselves.
She had horses who said they weren't afraid.
She had horses who lied.
She had horses who told the truth, who were stripped bare of their tongues.

She had some horses.

She had horses who called themselves, "horse."
She had horses who called themselves, "spirit." and kept their voices secret and to themselves.
She had horses who had no names.
She had horses who had books of names.

She had some horses.

She had horses who whispered in the dark, who were afraid to speak.
She had horses who screamed out of fear of the silence, who carried knives to protect themselves from ghosts.
She had horses who waited for destruction.
She had horses who waited for resurrection.

She had some horses.

She had horses who got down on their knees for any savior.
She had horses who thought their high price had saved them.

She had some horses.

No, you are most certainly not the only one here, Andrew. As we have discussed, this administration is stretching everything beyond belief. If you have seen the polls about Terry, the majority of the American people support the removal of the feeding tube.

Francis, those were compelling verses. I am caught up in the metaphor.

Listeners, who do you suppose was the "she"?

some songs about horses

Judy And The Dream Of Horses
Belle & Sebastian

Judy wrote the saddest song
She showed it to a boy in school today
Judy, where did you go wrong?
You used to make me smile when I was down
Judy was a teenage rebel
She did it with a boy when she was young
She gave herself to books and learning
She gave herself to being number one
Judy, I don't know you if you're gonna show me everything
Judy, I don't know you if you're gonna show me everything

Judy got a book at school
She went under the cover with her torch
She fell asleep till it was morning
She dreamt about the girl who stole a horse
Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping
Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping

Judy, let's go for a walk
We can kiss and do whatever you want
But you will be disappointed
You will fall asleep with ants in your pants
Judy, you're just trying to find and keep the dream of horses
And the song she wrote was Judy and the Dream of Horses
Dream of Horses
You dream of horses

The best looking boys are taken
The best looking girls are staying inside
So Judy, where does that leave you?
Walking the street from morning to night
With a star upon your shoulder lighting up the path that you walk
With a parrot on your shoulder, saying everything when you talk
If you're ever feeling blue
Then write another song about your dream of horses
Write a song about your dream of horses
Call it Judy And The Dream Of Horses
Call it Judy And The Dream Of Horses
You dream of horses

Wildfire
Michael Martin Murphey

She came down yellow mountain
on a dark flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night

Oh they say she died one winter
When there came a killing frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down his stall
In a blizzard he was lost
She ran calling Wildfire (3 times)

By the dark of the moon I planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot owl howling by my window now
For six nights in a row
She's coming for me I know
And on Wildfire we're both gonna go
We'll be riding Wildfire (3 times)

On Wildfire we're going to ride
Gonna leave sodbusting behind
Get these hard times right on out of my mind
Riding Wildfire

Pony
Tom Waits

I've seen it all, boys --
I've been all over.
Been everywhere in the whole wide world.
I rode the high line with ol' Blind Darby.
I danced real slow with Ida Jane.
I was full of wonder when I left Murfreesboro --
Now I am full of hollow on Maxwell street.

And I hope my pony
I hope my pony
I hope my pony
Knows the way back home.

I walked from Nachez to Hushpukena --
I built a fire by the side of the road.
I worked for nothing in a Belzoni saw mill.
I caught a blind out on the B and O
Talullah's friendly Belzoni ain't so
A 44'll get you 99.

And I hope my pony
I hope my pony
I hope my pony
Knows the way back home.

I run my race with burnt face Jake --
Gave him a Manzanita cross.
I lived on nothing but dreams and train smoke
Somehow my watch and chain got lost.
I wish I was home in Evelyn's kitchen
With old Gyp curled around my feet.

And I hope my pony
I hope my pony
I hope my pony
Knows the way back home.

dj, you are an amazing man. I only knew one of those songs, and that one was "Wildfire", which I really like.

"Judy and the Dream of Horses" was as esoteric as Francis' song.

You are so very prolific, dj.

Isn't he listeners?

(incidentally, you took the sting out of the news about Jessica)

one of my favourite Ian Tyson songs

Jaquima To Freno (Ian Tyson, B. McIntyre)

A
Jaquima to freno

He's an old vaquero

From another time

Hands as fine as the
D
Dealers of Reno

He's been to the ocean

He's been to the sea
A
Big long tapaderos hangin' both sides

Of an old Visalia tree

Chorus 1:
E A E
Hey Mr. Vaquero
D
Put a handle on my pony for me
C#
Teach me the mystery

Verse 2:

A
Jaquima to freno

He's an old Amansador

Still hangin' on

Just about gone

Like the California Condor
D
He been down to the rodear ground

Seen him on the movie screen
A
Ah but sometimes I think he's like America

Only see him in your dreams

(repeat chorus 1)

Chorus 2:
C# E
Did they sing all day
C#
Did they dance all night
E
Did they ride their spade bit ponies
C#
Through the golden light
E
Did they find true love
C#
Was it all a bunch of lies
E A
Quien sabe, maybe it was paradise

(repeat first verse, choruses 1 and 2 in that order)

i actually missed that post, i saw the various discussions of horses and thought, let's program some equine music for tonights show

both stories from florida are so different yet so similar, for some involved there will be closure, for others more pain and questions

a song for two souls, hopefully now at peace

Good Night
The Beatles

Now it's time to say good night
Good night sleep tight.
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night sleep tight.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Close your eyes and I'll close mine
Good night sleep tight.
Now the moon begins to shine
Good night sleep.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Now it's time to say good night
Good night sleep tight.
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night sleep tight.
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you.
Good night good night everybody
Everybody everywhere.
Good night.
