Is it safe to come in now? The computer in our studio went haywire. (whatever that means)

Thanks to all you canucks for the great songs, and to our George and dys for the reminder that we are still at war. Powerful line, "from my mother's sleep I fell into the state."

To everyone including your PD a dark song from Diana Krall.

DIANA KRALL LYRICS

"Dancing In The Dark"

Dancing in the dark 'til the tune ends
We're dancing in the dark and it soon ends
We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here
Time hurries by, we're here and we're gone

Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark

What - though love is old
What - though song is old
Through them we can be young

Hear this heart of mine
Wailin' all the time
Dear one, tell me that we're one

Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark, dancing

DIANA KRALL
Quote:
Biography
Krall was born into a musical family in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. She began learning the piano at age four. In high school, she started playing in a small jazz group. At the age of fifteen, she started playing regularly in several Nanaimo restaurants.

At age seventeen she won a scholarship from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and completed three terms.

In Nanaimo her playing attracted the attention of famed bass player Ray Brown (ex-husband of the late Ella Fitzgerald, long-time member of the Oscar Peterson Trio and Grammy-winning composer) and drummer Jeff Hamilton. After hearing her play, Brown and Hamilton persuaded Krall to move to Los Angeles, and study with pianist Jimmy Rowles, with whom she began to sing. This also brought her into contact with influential teachers and producers. In 1990, Krall relocated to New York.

Krall and British musician Elvis Costello were married on December 6, 2003 at Elton John's estate outside London. Their first children together, twin sons Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, were born December 6, 2006 in New York City.

"To Whom it May Concern"
dyslexia wrote:
I was run over by the truth one day.
Ever since the accident I've walked this way
So stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Heard the alarm clock screaming with pain,
Couldn't find myself so I went back to sleep again
So fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Every time I shut my eyes all I see is flames.
Made a marble phone book and I carved out all the names
So coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

I smell something burning, hope it's just my brains.
They're only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Where were you at the time of the crime?
Down by the Cenotaph drinking slime
So chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

You put your bombers in, you put your conscience out,
You take the human being and you twist it all about
So scrub my skin with women
Chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

-- Adrian Mitchell

Perhaps I heard the poet Alan Ginsberg reciting this?

Nope, I'm wrong:

"Perhaps his best known poem is To Whom it May Concern, about the Vietnam war, which was first read in Trafalgar Square in 1964. A revised version, referring not only to Vietnam, but also to Iraq and Venezuela was read at the Royal Albert Hall on 25 September 2005 as part of the Poetry Olympics Twenty05 Festival, organised by Michael Horovitz."

The War Is Over
By Phil Ochs

Silent Soldiers on a silver screen
Framed in fantasies and dragged in dream
Unpaid actors of the mystery
The mad director knows that freedom will not make you free
And what's this got to do with me

I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

Drums are drizzling on a grain of sand
Fading rhythms of a fading land
Prove your courage in the proud parade
Trust your leaders where mistakes are almost never made
And they're afraid that I'm afraid

I'm afraid the war is over
It's over, it's over

Angry artists painting angry signs
Use their vision just to blind the blind
Poisoned players of a grizzly game
One is guilty and the other gets the point to blame
Pardon me if I refrain

I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

So do your duty, boys, and join with pride
Serve your country in her suicide
Find the flags so you can wave goodbye
But just before the end even treason might be worth a try
This country is too young to die

I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

One-legged veterans will greet the dawn
And they're whistling marches as they mow the lawn
And the gargoyles only sit and grieve
The gypsy fortune teller told me that we'd been deceived
You only are what you believe

I believe the war is over
It's over, it's over

Notes:
The idea for this song came (indirectly) from Ginsberg's ``Wichita Vortex Sutra.'' Phil also wrote an article entitled Have You Heard? The War is Over! which was published in the Village Voice, L.A. Free Press and later in his War is Over song book.

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

Wow! What a diversity of music we experienced on our radio last evening.

Ragman, thanks for the references and the clarification of our dys' song. It's always good to see you in our wee studio.

edgar, I especially like Ochs' line "silent soldiers on a silver screen". Thanks, Texas.

Let's begin our day with an old mountain song from Appalachia, shall we?

RHODODENDRON

I want to wake up in the morning
Where the rhododendrons grow;
Where the sun comes a-peeping
Into where I'm a-sleeping
And the songbirds say, "Hello."
I want to wander thru' the wildwood
Where the fragrant breezes blow
And drift back to the mountains
Where the rhododendrons grow.

I want to climb up on the mountain
Where the rhododendron s grow;
Where the Lord is so near me
When I breathe He can hear me
And the whole world sings below.
I want to lay down all my burdens
And forget my worldly woes,
And stay here in West Virginia
Where the rhododendron s grow.

Listeners, it's another case of, "I know that song, but don't know why I know it."

Sunday Morning Coming Down Johnny Cash
Sunday Morning Coming Down by Johnny Cash

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
Playing with a can that he was kicking.
Then I walked across the street
And caught the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken.
And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughing little girl that he was swinging.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singing.
Then I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing,
And it echoed through the canyon
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

Good morning, Victor. Shall we let Sting cheer us up?

Sting - Brand New Day Lyrics

How many of you people out there
Been hurt in some kind of love affair
And how many times do you swear that you'll never love again?

How many lonely, sleepless nights
How many lies, how many fights
And why would you want to put yourself through all that again?

"Love is pain," I hear you say
Love has a cruel and bitter way
Of paying you back for all the faith you ever had in your brain

How could it be that what you need the most
Can leave you feeling just like a ghost?
You never want to feel so sad and lost again

One day you could be looking
Through an old book in rainy weather
You see a picture of her smiling at you
When you were still together
You could be walking down the street
And who should you chance to meet
But that same old smile that you've been thinking of all day

You can turn the clock to zero, honey
I'll sell the stock, we'll spend all the money
We're starting up a brand new day

Turn the clock all the way back
I wonder if she'll take me back
I'm thinking in a brand new way

Turn the clock to zero, sister
You'll never know how much I missed her
Starting up a brand new day

Turn the clock to zero, boss
The river's wide, we'll swim across
Started up a brand new day

It could happen to you - just like it happened to me
There's simply no immunity - there's no guarantee
I say love's such a force - if you find yourself in it
And sometimes no reflection is there

Baby wait a minute, wait a minute
Wait a minute, wait a minute
Wait a minute, wait a minute

Turn the clock to zero, honey
I'll sell the stock, we'll spend all the money
We're starting up a brand new day

Turn the clock to zero, Mac
I'm begging her to take me back
I'm thinking in a brand new way

Turn the clock to zero, boss
The river's wide, we'll swim across
Started up a brand new day

Turn the clock to zero buddy
Don't wanna be no fuddy duddy
Started up a brand new day

I'm the rhythm in your tune
I'm the sun and you're the moon
I'm a bat and you're the cave
You're the beach and I'm the wave
I'm the plow and you're the land
You're the glove and I'm the hand
I'm the train and you're the station
I'm a flagpole to your nation - yeah

Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Starting up a brand new day

I'm the present to your future
You're the wound and I'm the suture
You're the magnet to my pole
I'm the devil in your soul
You're the pupil I'm the teacher
You're the church and I'm the preacher
You're the flower I'm the rain
You're the tunnel I'm the train

Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Starting up a brand new day

You're the crop to my rotation
You're the sum of my equation
I'm the answer to your question
If you follow my suggestion
We can turn this ship around
We'll go up instead of down
You're the pan and I'm the handle
You're the flame and I'm the candle

Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
We're starting up a brand new day

I'M GONNA BE A WHEEL SOMEDAY
Fats Domino

I'm gonna be a wheel oneday, I'm gonna be somebody
I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you.
Everything's gonna go my way, and I won't need nobody
I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you.

You will cryay ay aya y, you will cryayay aya ay
You'll be wonderin why I don't look at you when I go strollin by.
I'm gonna be a wheel oneday, I'm gonna be somebody
I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you.

I'm gonna be a wheel oneday, I'm gonna be somebody
I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you.
Everything's gonna go my way, and I wont' need nobody
I'm gonna be a real gone cat, then I won't want you.

You will cryay ay ay ay, you will cryay ay ay ay
You'll be wonderin why I don't look at you when I go strollin by.

edgar, that song by Fats reminded me of Ezekiel Saw the Wheel. Do you know that many folks equate that with UFO's? Hey, let's listen and decide.

Harry Belafonte

Ezekiel saw the wheel, way up in the middle of the air,
Ezekiel saw the wheel, way in the middle of the air,
The big wheel run by faith, little wheel run by the grace of God
Wheel within a wheel, 'way in the middle of the air,
Wheel, wheel, wheel, wheel in the middle of the air.
Wheel, wheel, wheel, wheel in the middle of the air.

In his book on UFOs, Carl Jung makes use of the Biblical passage about the wheels that appear in this song. Something about the circle being the symbol for the longing to be a whole, fully integrated person; the similarity between many UFO sightings and the wheels being obvious.

BILLY GILMAN

"Little Things"

Little things that you do
Make me glad I'm in love with you
Little things that you say
Make me glad that I feel this way.
The way you smile, the way you hold my hand
And when I'm down you always understand.

You know I love those little things that I knew
The little things you whispered in my ear.
I know there ain't nobody else like you.
No one could do the little things you do.

Little things in my ear that you say
When there's no one near.
Little things that you do
Let me know that your love is true.
When we walk you like to hold my hand
And when we talk you tell me I'm your man.

You know I love those little things that I knew
The little things you whispered in my ear.
I know there ain't nobody else like you.
No one could do the little things you do.

Little things that you do
Make me glad I'm in love with you.
Little things that you say
Make me glad that I feel this way.
When we walk you like to hold my hand
And when we talk you tell me I'm your man.

You know I love those little things that I knew

Wow! You mean the same Carl Jung that was Freud's modified disciple? Thanks for that explanation, edgar.

Love your song, Texas, because it is the "little things" that bind us closer.

Well, I still can play this one on piano, folks, and it really moves in it's own way

Johnny Cash

Will The Circle Be Unbroken

I was standing by my window
on one cold and cloudy day
when I saw that hearse come rolling
for to carry my mother away

Lord I told that undertaker
undertaker please drive slow
for this body you are hauling
Lord, I hate to see her go

I will follow close behind her
try to hold up and be brave
but I could not hide my sorrow
when they laid her in her grave

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and Bye Lord Bye and Bye
There's a better Home Awaiting
in the sky Lord in the sky

Love it, Victor. Listening right now. Love the chord changes and the upbeat rhythm. How could we be down listening to that song replete with banjo and the entire Carter family.

I call that a hard cutting song for a Sunday. Many thanks, honey. Strange, I just played that on our studio piano. Usually, I had a man accompany me on the acoustic bass. No matter, cause I can still hear him, even those the strings are silent.

I BELIEVE IN YOU

Words and Music by Bob Dylan
1979 Special Rider Music

They ask me how I feel
And if my love is real
And how I know I'll make it through.
And they, they look at me and frown,
They'd like to drive me from this town,
They don't want me around
'Cause I believe in you.

They show me to the door,
They say don't come back no more
'Cause I don't be like they'd like me to,
And I walk out on my own
A thousand miles from home
But I don't feel alone
'Cause I believe in you.

I believe in you even through the tears and the laughter,
I believe in you even though we be apart.
I believe in you even on the morning after.
Oh, when the dawn is nearing
Oh, when the night is disappearing
Oh, this feeling is still here in my heart.

Don't let me drift too far,
Keep me where you are
Where I will always be renewed.
And that which you've given me today
Is worth more than I could pay
And no matter what they say
I believe in you.

I believe in you when winter turn to summer,
I believe in you when white turn to black,
I believe in you even though I be outnumbered.
Oh, though the earth may shake me
Oh, though my friends forsake me
Oh, even that couldn't make me go back.

Don't let me change my heart,
Keep me set apart
From all the plans they do pursue.
And I, I don't mind the pain
Don't mind the driving rain
I know I will sustain
'Cause I believe in you.

Victor, the acoustics in our little studio are great as are the speakers. The music came across perfectly.

edgar, wonder who dylan was referring to in his song? It's always hard to tell with that man. It could be a woman, but I don't think so, Texas.

What does Mac Davis believe? Let's listen and see.

I could just sit around making music all day long.
As long as I'm making my music, ain't gonna do nobody no harm.
And who knows, maybe I'll come up with a song
To make people want to stop all their fussing and fighting
Long enough to sing along.

I believe in music.
Oh, I believe in love.
And I believe in music.
Oh, I, I believe in love.
Music is love, and love is music, if you know what I mean.
People who believe in music are the happiest people I've ever seen.
So clap your hands and stomp your feet and shake your tambourine,
And lift your voices to the sky; tell me what you see.
I, I believe in music.
Oh, I believe in love.
I believe in music.
Oh, I, I believe in love.
Music is the universal language, and love is the key
To peace, hope, and understanding, and living in harmony.
So grab your brother by the hand, let's sing along with me,
And lift your voices to the sky; tell me what you see.
I, I believe in music.
Oh, I, I believe in love.
I, I believe in music.
Oh, I, I believe in love.

When Dylan converted to Christianity, he took three years of his career to write songs to promote his belief. I Belive in You was written during this time. (There was a rumor, which I don't know if true or false, that he was baptised in Pat Boone's swimming pool.)
