Letty: You might remember Rita Tushingham as "The Girl" (at the end of the movie) who might have been Lara's daughter in Doctor Zhivago (1965) .

Well, my goodness, Raggedy. I simply don't remember that. As I told someone, I had to see the movie to understand the book. Thanks, gal. I do recall that one scene where Omar was being hauled away in a boxcar, and as the poet, saw only the moon with whisps of clouds drifting across its face. Also, I recall the ice palace, and, of course, Lara's theme.

shari, where in the world have you been? Great to see you back with a "special" song, and here's one that is also special.

This version is by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Well, you wake up in the mornin, you hear the work bell ring,
And they march you to the table to see the same old thing.
Aint no food upon the table, and no pork up in the pan.
But you better not complain, boy, you get in trouble with the man.

Chorus:
Let the midnight special shine a light on me,
Let the midnight special shine a light on me,
Let the midnight special shine a light on me,
Let the midnight special shine a everlovin light on me.

Yonder come miss rosie, how in the world did you know?
By the way she wears her apron, and the clothes she wore.
Umbrella on her shoulder, piece of paper in her hand;
She come to see the govnor, she wants to free her man.

Chorus

If youre ever in houston, well, you better do the right;
You better not gamble, there, you better not fight, at all
Or the sheriff will grab ya and the boys will bring you down.
The next thing you know, boy, oh! youre prison bound

The Whistling Gypsy
The Kingston Trio

The gypsy rover came over the hill
Down through the valley so shady
He whistled and he sang
'Til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

Ah dee du, ah dee du da day
Ah dee du, ah dee day dee.
He whistled and he sang
'Til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

She left her father's castle gate
Left her own fond lover
Left her servants and her estate
To follow the gypsy rover

Ah dee du, ah dee du da day
Ah dee du, ah dee day dee
He whistled and he sang
'Til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

Her father saddled his fastest steed
Searched these valleys all over
Seeking his daughter
At great speed and the whistlin' gypsy rover
At last he came to a castle gate
Along the river Claydee
And there was music and there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

Ah dee du, ah dee du da day
Ah dee du, ah dee day dee
He whistled and he sang
'Til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

He is no gypsy, my father, she said
But a lord of these lands all over
And I will stay 'til my dying day
With the whistlin' gypsy rover

Ah dee du, ah dee du da day
Ah dee du, ah dee day dee
He whistled and he sang
'Til the green woods rang
'Til the green woods rang
'Til the green woods rang
And he won the heart of a lady

Hey, Texas. Love that gypsy song, cause I always been a gypsy in my soul.

From Van the Man:

(Van Morrison)

It's just the gypsy in my soul
Make me pack up my things and go
It may seem like I'm on a roll
But it's just the gypsy in my soul

Layin' out in the midday sun
Tryin' so hard not to run
Looking out at the deep blue sea
I guess it's just the gypsy in me

Jump on that train, catch that plane
Here and there and back again

Well it seems like some kind of cruel fate
Keep me moving in this restless state
Sometimes it feels like I don't have any goal
It's just the gypsy‰

Catch that train, jump on that plane
Here and there and back again

Well it seems like some kind of cruel fate
Keep me moving, moving in permanent restless state
Seems like some days I don't have any goal
It's just the gypsy in my soul

Gypsy in my soul
Gypsy in my soul

When I lost my baby (baby)
I almost lost my mind
When I lost my baby (baby)
I almost lost my mind
My head is in a spin since she's left me behind

I went to see the gypsy
And had my fortune read
I went to see the gypsy
And had my fortune read
I hung my head in sorrow when she said what she said

Well, I can tell you, people (people)
The news was not so good
Well, I can tell you, people (people)
The news was not so good
She said "Your baby's left you"
"This time she's gone for good" (gone for good)

Bah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ah-ooh-ooh

Know that one, Texas. and here's a different kind of gypsy song. It's bike week here in Florida, so.....

W.A.S.P.

Maneater

Turn loose the lightning metal hawgs and set me free
Turn loose my crying metal hearts, 1200 cc's
Cold steel forever I'm gonna ride and burn the flame
That breathes the fire- breathes the fire
And can't be tamed

Thunder rolling down the highway
These wheels of fire eat you alive
Them outlaw riders going my way
A Harley child until I die

Run to the scorching desert sun, V twins will scream
Into the blackness of the night at twisting speed
High on the hawg I'm riding on engines explode
It feels like thunder, it's breathing fire, it rules the road

Milwaukee metal on the highway
These wheels of fire eat you alive
Them outlaw riders going my way
Only the strong here will survive

Maneater- born free I ride
Maneater- wings of freedom burn the line
For metal minds

Them bad boys riding on forever
When they die they ride in Harley heaven

Purple People Eater
Sheb Wooley

[Words and Music by Sheb Wooley]

Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple eater to me

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
(One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (One eye)

Well he came down to earth and he lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater, don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you cuz you're so tough

It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
One-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me (One horn)

I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
(We wear short shorts)
Flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me

And then he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground
He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy ditty with a swingin' tune
Sing a boop boop aboopa lopa lum bam boom

Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
I like short shorts
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me (Purple People)

And then he went on his way, and then what do ya know
I saw him last night on a TV show
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in his head

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

My word, edgar. If we're doing retro this morning, let's listen to one by Sir Elton, and a song that I never quite understood.

Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes

They say Spain is pretty though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much

Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky

Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes.

Incidentally, I thought the word "leaving" was in those lyrics as opposed to "traveling".

Good morning.

Here's one explanation for "Daniel", Letty. Very Happy

The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, Elton's writing partner. When Elton wrote the music for it, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. This completely changed the meaning of the song, as the deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam Vet who returned home after the war, lost his eyesight, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of 2 brothers who part ways.

"Your eyes have died, you see more than I" refers to the loss of his eyesight. The CD says "travelling" . John Denver was "leaving" on a jet plane.

Good morning, Raggedy. You are a wonder, PA. I thought it had to do with Nam, but I wasn't quite certain. Thanks once again for your musical insight.

Everyone did the jet song, I see:

CHANTAL KREVIAZUK LYRICS

"Leaving On A Jet Plane"

I'm ... I'm ...

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye

But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

I'm ...

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I'll tell you now, they don't mean a thing

Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time, oh, let me kiss you
And close your eyes and I'll be on my way

Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times that I won't have to say ...

Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

And I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

But I'm leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
(Leaving) On a jet plane

Macdonald Carey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Macdonald Carey (born Edward Macdonald Carey, March 15, 1913 - March 21, 1994) was an American actor best known for his role as the patriarch Dr. Tom Horton on NBC's soap opera Days of our Lives. For almost three decades, he was the show's central cast member.

Early life and career

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Carey graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City with a bachelor's degree in 1935. He first made his career starring in various B-movies of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. He was known in many Hollywood circles as "King of the Bs", sharing the throne with his "queen", Lucille Ball. A most unlikely leading man, even in his earliest films, Carey surely owed what screen success he enjoyed to some mysterious "everyman" appeal that overshadowed his vapid appearance and seemingly diffident manner.

After World War II

A successful radio actor and stage performer whose credits included the hit Broadway show "Lady in the Dark", Carey joined the Marines in 1943, staying in uniform for four years. He returned to Paramount in 1947 in Suddenly, It's Spring. He continued with Paramount into the 1950s; by this time he had slipped into more noticeable character roles, and transitioned to westerns for a time, such as The Great Missouri Raid (1951), Outlaw Territory (1953) and Man or Gun (1958). Carey played patriot Patrick Henry in John Paul Jones (1959). He also appeared in Blue Denim (1959), The Damned (1962), Tammy and the Doctor (1963), El Dorado (1966), and End of the World (1977).

Carey also played a crusading attorney in the 1950s syndicated series Lock-Up. He played the starring role of attorney Herb Maris. A total of 78 episodes (then considered to be only two full seasons) were made 1959-1961, but apparently Carey did not appear in all of them.

Days of our Lives

For the remainder of his career, he played Tom Horton on Days of our Lives, from 1965 until his death in Beverly Hills, California from lung cancer in 1994. During this time, Carey suffered from a drinking problem, and eventually joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1982. [1] A longtime pipe smoker, he was seen in many films and early episodes of Days of our Lives with it. He was ordered by his doctor to quit in September 1991 after having to take a leave of absence from Days in order to remove a cancerous tumor from one of his lungs. He returned to the show in November of that year. [2]

He is most recognized today, over a decade after his passing, as the voice who recites the epigram each day before the program begins: "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives". From 1966 to 1994, he would also intone, "This is Macdonald Carey, and these are the days of our lives." (After Carey's passing, the producers, out of respect for Carey's family, decided not to use the second part of the opening tagline). At each intermission, his voice also says "We will return for the second half of Days of our Lives in just a moment". Since the Horton family is still regarded as the core of Days of our Lives, his memory has been allowed to remain imprinted on the show by the voiceovers remaining intact. He also served as the voice-over for the very first PBS ident in which he said "This is PBS...The Public Broadcasting Service."

Carey wrote several books of poetry and a 1991 autobiography, "The Days of My Life". For his contribution to television, Macdonald Carey has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 6536 Hollywood Boulevard.

Personal life

He was married to Elizabeth Hecksher from 1943 until their divorce in 1969. They had six children. Later, he dated Lois Kraines, who was his significant other from 1973 on. [3]

He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, alongside his daughter Lisa, who died in infancy. Carey also had five other children: Lynn, Theresa, Steven, Edward Macdonald Jr., and Paul.

Carey's daughter Theresa is the mother of Survivor: Panama Exile Island winner Aras Baskauskas. Lynn Carey was a 70's Penthouse Pet and well respected singer, providing music for Russ Meyer's legendary cult classic film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Harry James
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harry Haag James (March 15, 1916 - July 5, 1983) was a popular United States musician and band leader, and a well-known trumpet virtuoso.

Harry James was born in Albany, Georgia, the son of a bandleader of a traveling circus. By age 10 he was taking trumpet lessons from his father. His father had him on a very strict practicing schedule every day. He was given one page to learn out of the Arban's book every day and could not do anything until he learned that page.

In 1931 the family settled in Beaumont, Texas and James began playing with local dance bands. James joined the nationally popular Ben Pollack in 1935. At the start of 1937 he left Pollack to join Benny Goodman's orchestra, where he stayed through 1938.

In February of 1939 Harry James debuted his own big band in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He continued touring with the band into the 1980s. His was the first "name band" to employ vocalist Frank Sinatra, in 1939. In 1943 he married actress Betty Grable.

He plays trumpet in the 1950 film Young Man with a Horn, dubbing Kirk Douglas. His recording of "I'm Beginning to See the Light" appears in the motion picture My Dog Skip (2000). His music is also featured in the Woody Allen movie Hannah and Her Sisters. James recorded many popular records and appeared in many Hollywood movies.

In 1983, James, a longtime heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, but he continued to work, playing his last professional job on 26 June 1983 in Los Angeles just nine days before his death in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Judd Hirsch
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judd Hirsch was born March 15, 1935 in the Bronx, New York to Joseph Sidney Hirsch and Sally Kitzis Hirsch. He is an American actor, best known for playing the character Alex Reiger on the acclaimed television comedy series Taxi.

For his performance in Taxi, in 1981 and again in 1983, Judd Hirsch won the Emmy Award for Lead Actor In a Comedy Series. Hirsch went on to play the title character on the modestly successful sitcom Dear John and in 1989 won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series in a Comedy or Musical for this role. He later teamed with Bob Newhart in the short-lived comedy George and Leo]. He had also previously starred for one season in the series Delvecchio, playing a police detective (1976-77).

In motion pictures, Hirsch received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 1980's Ordinary People, his other well known film roles in the 1980s are in the 1983 drama film Without a Trace, the 1984 comedy-drama film Teachers and the 1988 film Running on Empty. Hirsch and Krumholtz also played father and son in Conversations with My Father, a Herb Gardner play for which Hirsch won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Krumholtz credits Hirsch with jump-starting his career after Hirsch chose him during the audition process for Conversations.

Judd Hirsch once voiced himself on an episode of Family Guy. He is seen building a nuclear bomb for the Keebler Elves to use against Snap, Crackle and Pop. His lines only consisted of two words.
Judd Hirsch starred on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as a pediatrician accused of murder.
Most recently, Hirsch was a guest star on the pilot episode of the NBC series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as the producer of an SNL-esque sketch show who goes into an on-air rant reminiscent of the 1976 film Network.

Michael Edward Love (born March 15, 1941 in Los Angeles, California) is an American singer and songwriter who was one of the lead singers and lyric writers of The Beach Boys. He formed the band along with Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and a school friend Al Jardine. Mike Love is first cousin to the Wilson brothers.

Role in The Beach Boys

Although he tried the saxophone in the early days, Mike Love was mainly a singer. He shared the role of lead vocalist with Brian Wilson during the band's early years, singing many of the Beach Boys' biggest hits, including "Surfin' Safari", "Surfin' USA", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Be True to Your School", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "Little Saint Nick", "I Get Around", "When I Grow Up (to be a man)" and "California Girls". His lead vocal roles later diminished as other members' voices began to be heard more, but he remained one of the most recognized voices in the group, on songs such as "Do It Again" and "Kokomo". He is also known for his bass vocals which underpin some the Beach Boys' catchiest harmonies, such as the vocal break in "I Can Hear Music" and the bass line in "Good Vibrations." Onstage, Love has always served as the Beach Boys' "MC".

Love also wrote or co-wrote lyrics to many of the Beach Boys early songs, mostly with the themes of surfing or love. He later won a lawsuit for his uncredited contributions to many early songs to which his name was then added. Throughout his career he continued to co-write numerous songs, and wrote some songs on his own.

In the late Sixties, as founder Brian Wilson was sidelined by mental illness and drug problems, Love played an increasingly contentious role in the Beach Boys career, and rightly or wrongly, he has often been identified as one of the "villains" in the band's story. According to most sources, Love was the most vehement among group members in his opposition to the lyrical content and avant garde modalities of the Pet Sounds and SMiLE projects (see below), fearing that the band had strayed too far from their tried-and-true hitmaking formula.

Interestingly, Love was one of the first pop musicians to become involved in the practice of Transcendental Meditation, through his meeting with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. As a result he accompanied The Beatles, Donovan, Prudence Farrow and Mia Farrow on their famous trip to the self-styled guru's ashram at Rishikesh in India in early 1968. At the time, it seemed quite aberrant that the most politically conservative and least psychedelically inclined Beach Boy had taken upon the appearance of a full-bearded mystic. Love has remained an advocate of the benefits of TM to the present and contributed a rare songwriting effort on the subject to the Beach Boys' 1968 album Friends.

In the late sixties (with Brian no longer touring), Carl Wilson initially took over leadership of the band (with contracts reading that venues hired "Carl Wilson plus four other musicians"), but by the late 70s Love quickly reasserted his dominance over the band; setlists were often limited to the hit catalog, with more recent and experimental material confined to the group's moderately successful albums of the time period. This approach alienated the Wilson brothers--especially Dennis, who after a hand accident had assumed co-frontman responsibilities--but it capitalized directly on the first wave of late 50s/early 60s rock and roll nostalgia (spurred by the success of American Graffiti and Happy Days) and managed to keep the group's business interests viable. The success of this approach was confirmed in 1974 with the release of the compilation Endless Summer. (Love has claimed to be responsible for the album, even though it was in fact supervised by Capitol Records staffer Michael Ross without any assistance from Love or the Beach Boys.) The album reached the top of the charts and introduced new generations of listeners to their music, cementing the creation of a veritable cottage industry of touring and repackages that continues to pay dividends to this day.

While Love has often been perceived as a negative creative force in the Beach Boys, there are occasions on which he has exhibited sound commercial instincts, such as his co-writing and lead-singing, on the 1988 US number one hit "Kokomo", the only number one the band had without Brian Wilson's involvement. Mike Love (along with "Kokomo" co-writers Scott McKenzie, Terry Melcher, and John Phillips) was nominated for a Golden Globes Award (1988) in the Original Song category.

After the death of Carl Wilson in 1998 the Beach Boys split up, and Love took over the name, touring with no other original members but with longtime member Bruce Johnston and various musicians formerly of tribute bands.

The Beach Boys were the introductory act in the televised 2005 Fourth of July celebration on the grounds in front of the United States Capitol. The Beach Boys performance featured five hits originally sung by Love and was their first Fourth of July appearance there since 1985. While detractors criticize Love for carrying on The Beach Boys name, supporters point to shows such as this as evidence of Mike Love's dedication to the millions of people who love the hit music of The Beach Boys.

Pet Sounds/Smile controversies

Probably motivated in part by anxiety over his replacement as Wilson's writing partner (as Wilson increasingly relied on Pet Sounds lyricist Tony Asher and, later, SMiLE collaborator Van Dyke Parks), Love became increasingly hostile towards Wilson and his new material between late 1965 and early 1967, a period that critics and fans now widely acknowledge as the most creative phase of Wilson's career.

He reportedly led the group's opposition to the Pet Sounds material and particularly objected to the song "Hang On to Your Ego"--directly inspired by his cousin's LSD experiences--which at his insistence was partly re-written and re-titled as "I Know There's an Answer." However, at this stage Brian Wilson still held sufficient sway to overrule his bandmates, and the album was completed more or less as Brian had intended.

Another factor that is likely to have influenced Love's views is that, while Brian had withdrawn from touring in late 1964, Love and his bandmates had to perform Brian's increasingly complex music on stage. There is no doubt that Brian's rapid musical development placed the group in an increasingly difficult position, since they were being asked to perform material that, in the case of "Good Vibrations," Brian had recorded over a period of many months using the best musicians available. While the Beach Boys were equal to the task as vocalists, Brian's intricate arrangements were becoming all but impossible for them to perform as a five-piece band.

Love's trenchant and vocal opposition to Wilson's new direction came to a head over the songs they were recording for their follow-up to Pet Sounds, the legendary SMiLE album, which was begun in mid-1966 but was eventually shelved near its completion in mid-1967. Some who have listened to Smiley Smile, the album that was released after Pet Sounds, concur that Love's supposed rumored pleas of not messing with the "formula" made sense. The release of Smile in 2004, however, laid any concerns of that to rest.

Love is reported to have vehemently objected to Parks' oblique lyrics, reserving particular scorn for the song "Cabinessence". During a heated argument at a recording session, Love demanded that Parks explain the song's meaning; Parks demurred and walked out; some few weeks later he officially terminated his partnership with Wilson, effectively scuttling the album only weeks before its scheduled release. Although Love had nothing personal against Parks (who plays on the Summer in Paradise album and whom Love has defended several times as being a nice guy, despite Parks' admitted hostility against him), he feared the lyrics were too abstract for a Beach Boys record.

Parks has long maintained that Love's dogged opposition to Smile was the major reason that Brian finally abandoned it, and that his opposition was motivated in part by professional jealousy, as well as the fear that Wilson's departure from the Beach Boys' proven formula would cause them to lose ground. In a 2004 interview with Mojo magazine, Love argued that he was not opposed to Smile, as claimed, and that he liked and respected Parks' work, but this claim was strongly denied by Parks, who wrote to the magazine to protest at what he described as Love's "revisionism" and stated unequivocally that Love's hostility to Smile was indeed the chief reason why the project was shelved.

Love wrote the lyrics to their famous 1966 single "Good Vibrations", although the song also has an earlier set of lyrics written by Wilson's main Pet Sounds collaborator, Tony Asher, which Wilson restored on the 2004 SMiLE version.

Partly in response to the band's concerns, articulated by Mike, Brian began writing songs that were easier to perform live, which turned up on the late 1967 album Wild Honey.

Legal controversies

In the late 1990s Brian Wilson went to court to regain his rights to the publishing company, Sea of Tunes, which owned the copyrights to most of the Beach Boys' hit songs. The suit stemmed from Wilson's forced decision to sign over his publishing rights to his father Murry Wilson in 1969, but when the suit came to court it was found that the contract Wilson had signed was not valid because of the mental problems he was suffering from at the time. (It was even suggested that Murry had signed his son's name on the document.) Wilson failed to regain the copyrights, but won a $25 million settlement.

Following Wilson's win, Love launched his own lawsuit, claiming that he had made significant writing contributions to many Beach Boys songs, including two titles on Pet Sounds and "California Girls", and never received due credit (or the accompanying royalties). Love won the case, due in no small part to Brian's statements that Mike's assertions were correct (although Tony Asher has unequivocally stated that Love had no input into at least one song involved, Wouldn't It Be Nice). As a result, he was granted $13 million of Wilson's award, and his name was retrospectively added to the writing credits on all subsequent releases of those songs. (Love and Wilson reportedly had no malice toward each other in the lawsuit; unable to come to terms, they resorted to going to court to settle matters.)

Love has also initiated successful lawsuits against Al Jardine (mostly the Beach Boys' company, Brother Records, suing Jardine at Love's instigation, but also personal lawsuits) for Jardine's use of the band name Beach Boys Family And Friends in his solo work.

Most recently, Love initiated a lawsuit on November 3, 2005 against Brian Wilson and the Mail On Sunday newspaper, arguing that both misused the Beach Boys' name and Love's image in a promotional CD that was given with the paper to promote the 2004 Smile release, and also arguing that Wilson has misused the Beach Boys' name in other promotions relating to Smile, resulting in loss of income for the band. He is seeking several million dollars in damages, and also a million dollars to cover costs of advertising to correct the perceived damage to the band's reputation.

Mike has stated: "Once again the people around Brian, my cousin and collaborator on many hits, who I love and care about, have used him for their own financial gain without regard to his rights, or my rights, or even the rights of the estates of his deceased brothers, Carl and Dennis, and their children... Unfortunately, history repeats itself. Because of Brian's mental issues he has always been vulnerable to manipulation. I simply want to stop the infringers and stop the deception!"

The legal document filed is purported to contain many half-truths and inaccuracies. Among these it credits Mike Love as the primary force behind the Beach Boys, accuses Al Jardine of mental instabilities and incorrectly refers to one of Brian Wilson's songs as ?'Love and Money' instead of ?'Love and Mercy'.

Brian Wilson's website listed the following statement in response: "The lawsuit against Brian is meritless. While he will vigorously defend himself he is deeply saddened that his cousin Mike Love has sunk to these depths for his own financial gain."

Recently, however, Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine have appeared in front of the cameras together again in what seemed to be one of their many attempts to reconcile. They even jokingly stated "to start a new tour if they weren't stopped to do so by Brian's management, and Mike's incurable addiction to lawsuits"

Solo career

Love has attempted several times to have a career outside the Beach Boys. In the mid 1970s he recorded two albums with side band Celebration, including the top 20 hit single Almost Summer (co-written by Brian Wilson and Jardine). In the late 1970s he also recorded two unreleased solo albums, First Love and Country Love. Some tracks from First Love were used on later Beach Boys releases.

In 1981 he released a solo album, Looking Back With Love. Consisting mostly of cover versions, this was neither critically nor commercially successful.

After that point he confined himself to guest spots on recordings by people like Dean Torrence of Jan And Dean and to re-recordings of old hits released on packages like Catch a Wave with Adrian Baker (MELECO - MEL CD 101 - 1996) and Mike Love, Bruce Johnston & David Marks of the Beach Boys Salute NASCAR and Union 76 Gasoline (with Adrian Baker), the latter released to gas stations as promotional items on Love's own MELECO label.

However, in 2003 he announced plans for a new solo album, consisting partially of rerecorded First Love and Country Love material. This album, which has been announced under the working titles Unleash The Love and Mike Love, Not War (not to be confused with the Beach Boys bootleg of the same name), has been completed (and bootleg recordings circulate among fans, the consensus of whom is that it is Love's best solo work, released or otherwise), but has yet to find a label or be released.

Miscellaneous

The Fall's song "Mike's Love Xexagon", from their "The Real New Fall LP" album, alludes to Mike Love in its title and lyrics, calling him "the worm in the bacon of BB" and mentioning "Good Vibrations", no doubt referring to the aforementioned legal controversies.

Scottish band Belle & Sebastian mention Mike Love in their song "I Love My Car" on the "I'm Waking Up To Us" single, singing "I love my Carl / I love my Brian, my Dennis, and my Al / I could even find it in my heart / to love Mike Love"

In addition to being cousin to the Wilson brothers, Love is the elder brother of former professional basketball player Stan Love, and the uncle of high school prospect Kevin Love.[1]

Eva Jacqueline Longoria (born March 15, 1975) is a Golden Globe Award-nominated American film and television actress. She is best known for her role as Gabrielle Solis in the ABC television series Desperate Housewives. She has also become an internationally recognized model, appearing in several high profile advertising campaigns and numerous men's magazines. Eva announced her engagement to NBA star Tony Parker on November 30, 2006.

Biography

Early life

Longoria [1] was born in Corpus Christi, Texas to Mexican-American Catholic parents Enrique Longoria Jr. (born in Rachal, Brooks County, Texas) and Ella Eva Mireles (married in Falfurrias, Brooks County, Texas). The youngest of four daughters, she has three older sisters: Elizabeth Judina, Emily Jeannette (married and divorced from David Brown, married to Dennis Blevins, by whom she has two daughters, Briella Megan and Bethany Mikaela) and Esmeralda Josephina. She attended Roy Miller High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. During this time she won the title of "Miss Corpus Christi, USA" in 1998. After completing college, she entered a talent contest which led her to Los Angeles, shortly after she was spotted and signed by a theatrical agent.

The Longoria were a family of rancheros, rural proprietors in Northern Mexico and in what is now Texas, a branch of the noble family de Longoria which came from Asturias, Spain, to Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Texas, in then New Spain (now Mexico and United States of America) in the 1600s. On her father's side, she is still a descendant from King Alfonso IX of Leon by his mistress Aldonça Martins da Silva (through the family de Benavides), King Afonso III of Portugal by one of his mistresses either Madragana or Maria Peres de Enxara (through the family de Sosa), King Alfonso X of Castile and King Saint Louis IX of France (through the family de La Cerda)[2].

Career

Longoria landed her first television role in 2000, guest starring in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. It was a humble beginning, but there was soon more work. Another guest appearance in General Hospital the same year preceded her big break in popular American soap opera The Young and the Restless, in which she played psychotic Isabella Braña Williams from 2001 to 2003 and was listed in People en Español's "Most Beautiful People" for 2003. After leaving The Young and the Restless, she was seen on the now-cancelled Dragnet. Although it lasted only two seasons, the show gave Longoria another leading star credit to her name. Following Dragnet, she starred in two ill-fated productions - Señorita Justice - a poorly received direct-to-video film and a television film titled The Dead Will Tell.

In 2004 Longoria landed a role that elevated her to the A-List. She starred as adulteress Gabrielle Solis in the worldwide break-out ABC hit Desperate Housewives. As the show became an overnight sensation, Longoria's career was well and truly launched. But, she never considered her career to jump off so fast, "I think it's funny when people say I'm an overnight sensation, because I've been working at it for 10 years,"[1]

Shortly after her debut on Desperate Housewives, Longoria starred in a poorly received direct-to-video film titled Carlita's Secret, for which she was also co-producer. In 2005, she was rewarded for her performance as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives when she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy along with her co-stars. Even though Longoria or the rest of the cast didn't win, she was awarded the prestigious ALMA AWARD, and named entertainer of the year She also stars opposite Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland in the 2006 thriller The Sentinel, which is her first major role in a theatrical movie (both Douglas and Sutherland noted that much to their surprise, Eva whipped both of them in gun practice). Longoria continues to be included in lists of Hollywood's Most Beautiful, and was listed as #1 in Maxim's Hottest Female Stars of 2005 and 2006, becoming the first woman to top the list in two consecutive years. In her most recently released film, Harsh Times, she plays Sylvia. She co-stars with actors Freddy Rodriguez and Christian Bale.

On her interview with Ryan Seacrest on The Interview with Ryan Seacrest on E! she has stated: "I don't want to be on 7th Heaven -- on for 20 years and no one's really watching and it's hanging on by a thread." She has stated multiple times that she will not renew her Desperate Housewives contract once it is up. She has set her sights on the film industry.[2] At the time of her statements, the length of her contract was not known, but she has since revealed it to be 10 years, starting from the first season.[3]

In May 2006 Maxim magazine named Longoria number 1 on the Hot 100 list for 2006.

In 2006, Longoria appeared on Jessica Simpson's music video "A Public Affair" along with Christina Milian, Christina Applegate, Ryan Seacrest, Maria Menounos and Andy Dick.

Also in 2006, Longoria was voted on to PETA's Worst Dressed List for wearing fur. [3]

Longoria recently won a People's Choice Award for Best TV Actress.[4]

Longoria has recently rebuffed rumors that she will quit Desperate Housewives.[3]

In January 2007 Eva Longoria has been chosen to be the first face of Bebe Sport. She will appear in the Spring/Summer 2007 campaign, photographed by Greg Kadel. The actress also holds model contracts with L'Oreal and Hanes, New York & Co.[5]

Personal life

Longoria was married to Tyler Christopher, General Hospital star, from 2002 to 2004, and as such, was also credited as Eva Longoria Christopher. Longoria has been romantically linked to SAG president Edward W V Stephens, successful writer Milan Gracanin, ex-*NSYNC member JC Chasez, actor Mousir Syed and Life As We Know It star, Sean Faris (although both Faris and Longoria deny any romantic link). Although some have reported her height as 5'2", she is in fact 5'1".[6] Eva is known as being a heavy smoker, and is often seen smoking during filming breaks.[7]

As of November 30, 2006, she is engaged to NBA basketball star Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs. Eva and Tony called in to the Ryan Seacrest radio show to announce it. She said the way he proposed was "perfect, personal, and sweet." After playing against the Utah Jazz, Parker flew out to Los Angeles, which was random because she never thought he would come there after the game. She got off work at about midnight and he was there waiting for her. The two reportedly plan to wed in the summer of 2007.[8] Reports said Longoria claimed she's had to teach Tony Parker lots of tricks in the bedroom because he was so inexperienced when he met her "I'm the experienced one. I'm the teacher, especially about love. He's always telling me he's never met anyone who loves the way I do, wholly, freely and unconditionally."[9]

On December 24, 2005, a car driven by Parker was cited for impeding traffic. Longoria, who was a passenger, allegedly began verbally abusing the officer by yelling: "He's just a Mexican bike cop. He only wants your autograph." She later denied the allegation, saying through her publicist: "I never made any sort of racial slurs, let alone made any comments about the officer being Mexican, as a Mexican myself."[10]

She is a Catholic and jokingly mentioned about how uneasy it made her feel in an episode of Desperate Housewives when her character attacked a nun. She also has mentioned in the past that her grandmother at first disapproved of the fact that her character was having an adulterous affair with a 16 year old.[citation needed]

*-------------- Guaranteed to Roll Your Eyes ---------------*

Although we were being married in New Hampshire, I wanted to
add a touch of my home state, Kansas, to the wedding. My
fiancee, explaining this to a friend, said that we were
planning to have wheat rather than rice thrown after the
ceremony.

Our friend thought for a moment. Then he said solemnly,
"It's a good thing she's not from Idaho."

Well, folks, there's our BostonBob back again hawking his wares about wheat, rice, and potatoes.

The Beach Boys bio was really interesting to me, hawkman, and I know a great deal about them, but you just expanded my knowledge. Thanks for the humorous tale, buddy.

Back later with a beach song and an observation, but will await our Raggedy to do her "thang". <smile>
