Mr. Turtle. Welcome back, honey. What a wonder day this has turned out to be, folks.

That, too, is a song of remembrance, yitwail. Deja vu?

Time for a station break so that I can do breakfast.

This is cyberspace, WA2K radio.

Well, folks, I was quite surprised to find that a song has been written abou the Gulf War. It looks at conflict from both sides:

Gulf War Song

(All, with Dave on lead melody)
We got a call to write a song about the war in the Gulf
But we shouldn't hurt anyone's feelings
So we tried, then gave up, 'cause there was no such song
But the trying was very revealing
What makes a person so poisonous righteous
That they'd think less of anyone who just disagreed?
She's just a pacifist, he's just a patriot
If I said you were crazy, would you have to fight me?

Fighters for liberty, fighters for power
Fighters for longer turns in the shower
Don't tell me I can't fight, 'cause I'll punch out your lights
And history seems to agree that I would fight you for me

So we read and we watched all the specially selected news
And we learned so much more 'bout the good guys
Won't you stand by the flag? Was the question unasked
Won't you join in and fight with the allies?
What could we say...we're only 25 years old?
With 25 sweet summers, and hot fires in the cold
This kind of life makes that violence unthinkable
We'd like to play hockey, have kids and grow old

Fighters for Texaco, fighters for power
Fighters for longer turns in the shower
Don't tell me I can't fight 'cause I'll punch out your lights
And history seems to agree that I would fight you for me
That us would fight them for we

He's just a peacenik and she's just a warhawk
That's where the beach was, that's where the sea
What could we say...we're only 25 years old?
And history seems to agree
that I would fight you for me
That us would fight them for we

Is that how it always will be?

Listening to the CBC program this morning "Sounds Like Canada" talking about Canadian symbols (top three: beaver, maple leaf, Mounties, if you're interested) and they closed off the segment with Gordon Lightfoot. Man, was there ever a sweeter singer (in his prime) or a better storyteller/thought provoker? Since this thread seems to celebrate the power of musicians/lyricists to paint us pictures and stir our hearts I'm sending you a Lightfoot song that just seemed somehow appropriate:

Minstrel of the Dawn -- Gordon Lightfoot

The Minstrel Of The Dawn is here to make you laugh and bend your ear.
Up the steps you'll hear him climb, all full of thoughts, all full of rhymes.
Listen to the pictures flow across the room into your mind they go.
Listen to the strings
they jangle and dangle while the old guitar rings.

The Minstrel Of The Dawn is he -- not too wise, but oh so free.
He'll talk of life out on the street, he'll play it sad and say it sweet.
Look into his shining face, of loneliness you'll always find a trace.
Just like me and you,
he's trying to get into things more happy than blue.

A minstrel of the changing tide, He'll ask for nothing but his pride.
Just sit him down upon that chair, go fetch some wine and set it there.
Listen to the pictures flow, and follow the fingers where they go.
Listen to the strings
they jangle and dangle while the old guitar rings.

A Minstrel Of The Dawn is near, just like a "step and fetchet" here.
He's like an old time troubadour wanting life and nothing more.
Look into his shining eyes and if you see a ghost don't be surprised.
Like me and you
he's trying to get into things more happy than blue.

The minstrel boy will understand, he holds the promise in his hand.
He talks of better days ahead and by his words your fortune's read.
Listen to the pictures flow across the room into your mind they go.
Listen to the strings
they jangle and dangle while the old guitar rings.

Tai Chi, Welcome to WA2K cyber radio. Are you oriental? Do you play mai jong? <smile>

Yes, Gordon Lightfoot is fabulous and that song is, as well, my friend. Stick around. We do more than play music here.

Thai, anyone?
This song is called "yoot fun gor bai mai teung" from the album Soundshake by Clash.

TALมีคนเป็นล้านต้องหยุดตัวเอง ยอมพ่ายแพ้ละทิ้งฝันไป
mee kon ben laan dtong yoot dtua eng yorm pai pae la ting fun bai
There are millions people who give up and throw their dreams away.

ไปไม่ถึงฝันอันยิ่งใหญ่ เพราะเขาท้อใจตัวเอง
bai mai teung fun un ying yai prow kao tor jai dtua eng
They'll never become what they want to be. Because they are discouraged.

เธอเองก็จงอย่ายอมแพ้ จงแปรเปลี่ยนความทุกข์เป็นฝันสดใส
ter eng gor jong yaa yorm pae jong brae blian kwarm took ben fun sot sai
But you shouldn't give up. You have to change sadness into a bright dream.

ทำตามความตั้งใจ อย่าหยุดฝันเธอจะไปไม่ถึง
tam dtaam kwarm dtung jai yaa yoot fun ter ja bai mai teung
Do what your heart is telling you to do. Don't give up on your dreams.

เธออาจจะล้มและแพ้บ่อย แต่อยากให้ลุกขึ้นสู้หน่อย
ter art ja lom lae pae boi dtae yaak hai look keun soo noi
Maybe you've fallen down and been defeated too often. But I want to you to get up, you have to persevere.

คอยบอกตัวเองไม่มีอะไรได้มาง่ายดาย
koi bork dtua eng mai mee a-rai dai maa ngai kai
Tell yourself nothing good ever comes too easily.

จงอย่ามั่วท้อให้เอาใหม่ เหน็ดเหนื่อยแค่

A little too long for a jong song, so I did edit it a bit. Razz

My word, folks. Where did all those numbers come from? Shocked Sorry, listeners, I swear I'm not in the numbers racket.

I noticed today on the web, that someone had written a tribute to Maurice Gibbs of the Bee Gees.

Let's play a song by him, then:

Bee Gees
Too Much Heaven

Nobody gets too much heaven no more
It's much harder to come by
I'm waiting in line
Nobody gets too much love anymore
It's as high as a mountain
And harder to climb

Oh you and me girl
Got a lot of love in store
And it flows through you
And it flows through me
And I love you so much more
Then my life..I can see beyond forever
Ev'rything we are will never die
Loving's such a beautiful thing
Oh you make my world.. a summer day
Are you just a dream to fade away

Nobody gets too much heaven no more
It's much harder to come by
I'm waiting in line
Nobody gets too much love anymore
It's as high as a mountain
And harder to climb

You and me girl got a highway to the sky
We can turn away from the night and day
And the tears you had to cry
You're my life..
I can see a new tomorrow
Ev'rything we are will never die
Loving's such a beautiful thing
When you are to me, the light above
Made for all to see our presious love

Nobody gets too much heaven no more
It's much harder to come by
I'm waiting in line
Nobody gets too much love anymore
It's as high as a mountain
And harder to climb

Wonder where the pup and the hawk are?

I'm here, Letty.

The only entertainment personality that I could find born on this date is Betsy Palmer. I don't know a thing about Betsy Palmer, but here she is: Laughing

Welcome back, Raggedy. Well, at least we have a turtle and a pup with us today.

Substituting for the hawk:

Biography: "Direct from Chicago's DePaul University, Betsy Palmer underwent intensive training at New York's Actors Studio, supporting herself as a secretary. She made her professional bow in stock in Wisconsin and Illinois in 1950; one year later, she made the first of hundreds of TV appearances. In 1955, Palmer first appeared on Broadway in The Grand Prize, and that same year launched her sporadic film career. Later stage credits included Forty Carats and extensive touring in the role of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific.
To millions of baby-boomers, Palmer will forever be associated with her work as a panelist on such TV game shows as I've Got a Secret; a later generation of televiewers will most readily recall her as Virginia Bullock on the 1989-90 season of Knot's Landing.
To those whose teen years coincided with the late 1970s and early 1980s, however, Betsy Palmer is known only as the vicious, vengeful, ax-wielding Mrs. Voorhees (Jason's mom) in the first Friday the 13th (1980); reportedly, Palmer won that role because she was willing to drive her own car to and from location shoots." - Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Update: "2005 marks the 25th anniversary of the classic horror film that started it all, Friday The 13th. The star of the film, Betsy Palmer, and Friday The 13th" Part 2's Warrington Gillette, will appear in the new motion picture, Penny Dreadful, currently in production. As coincidence would have it, this reunites the actress that portrayed the camp counselor slasher herself, 'Mrs. Voorhees', with her big screen son 'Jason'." - Thanks to eMediaWire.com

Good afternoon radio land, he was a…

PINBALL WIZARD
WHO lyrics

Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the silver ball
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball

He stands like a statue
Becomes part of the machine
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean
He plays by intuition
The digit counters fall
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball

He's a pin ball wizard
There has got to be a twist
A pin ball wizard
S'got such a supple wrist

How do you think he does it?
I don't know!
What makes him so good?

He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear those buzzers and bells
Don't see lights a flashin'
Plays by sense of smell
Always has a replay
Never tilts at all
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball

I thought I was
The Bally table king
But I just handed
My pin ball crown to him

Even my usual table
He can beat my best
His disciples lead him in
And he just does the rest
He's got crazy flipper fingers
Never seen him fall
That deaf dumb and blind kind
Sure plays a mean pin ball

Hey, wizard. WHO are you?

Maybe this will work, folks

Uriah Heep
» The Wizard

He was the wizard of a thousand kings
and a chance to meet him one night wondering.
He told me tales and he drank my wine.
Me and my magic man kinda feeling fine.
He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire.
And as he spoke I felt a deep desire
to free the world of its fear and pain
and help the people to feel free again.
Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts?
Cause then I know we'll find we're not so far apart.
Everybody's got to be happy, everyone should see.
For we know the joy of life and peace that love can bring.
So spoke the wizard in his mountain home.
The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone.
And I will dream of my magic night
and the million silver stars that guide me with their light.

The Brand New Tennessee Waltz

Oh, my, but you have a pretty face,
You favor a girl that I knew,
I imagine that she´s still in Tennessee,
And, by God, I should be there, too
I´ve a sadness too sad to be true.
But I left Tennessee in a hurry, Dear,
The same way that I´m leaving you,
´Cause love is mainly just memories
And everyone´s got him a few,
So when I´m gone I´ll be glad to love you.

At the brand new Tennessee Waltz you´re literally waltzing on air;
At the brand new Tennessee Waltz there's no telling who will be there.

When I leave it´ll be like I found you, Love,
Descending Victorian stairs,
I´m feeling like one of your photographs
Trapped while I´m putting on airs,
And getting even by saying, "Who cares".
So, have all of your passionate violins
Play a tune for a Tennessee kid,
Who´s feeling like leaving another town
With no place to go if he did,
´Cause they´ll catch you wherever you're hid.

At the brand new Tennessee Waltz you´re literally waltzing on air;
At the brand new Tennessee Waltz there's no telling who will be there.

Jesse Winchester

Tales

We told our tales as we sat under
Morning's sleepy sky
With all the colours of the sunrise
Shining in our eyes.

One, then another, with a story of yesterday's lives
Or of a lover who had gone in a
Moment of strife.

No thought of sleep ever dwells upon
The wise man's mind
Some task or audience stealing every
Moment of his time.

Thus we have learned to live
While mortal men stand waiting to die.
How can we do what must be done in
Just one short life.

And if you ask, then you must know.
If you still doubt, you should be told.
It was not we that made it so.
It was by those who went before.

And there you sit, tomorrow's child
So full of love, so full of life
But you must rise to meet the day
Lest you become another tale

And there you sit, tomorrow's child
So full of love, so full of life
But you must rise to meet the day
Lest you become another tale

Another tale, another tale
Another tale

Lovers Cross

Guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
But now I've come to my decision
And it's a-one of the painful kind
'Cause now it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn't do
But baby I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

Yes, I really got to hand it to you
'Cause you really tried
But for ev'ry time that we spent laughin'
There were two times that I cried
And you were tryin' to make me your martyr
And that's the one thing I just couldn't do
'Cause baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

'Cause tables are meant for turnin'
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin'
When the people and mem'ries they join aren't the same

So I'll hope that you can find
Another who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

Good morning, WA2K listeners and contributors.

Hey, Rex. Thanks for all the great songs, Maine. I especially like the Croce one as I can hum along with it.

Well, the morning sun has burned off the fog and all looks lovely in my small world.

From Elvis:

Welcome to my world,
Won't you come on in
Miracles, I guess
Still happen now and then
Step into my heart
Leave your cares behind
Welcome to my world
Built with you in mind

Knock and the door shall be opened
Seek and you will find
Ask and you'll be given
The key to this WORLD of mine

I'll be waiting there
With my arms unfurled
Waiting just for you
Welcome to my world
Welcome to my world

Good morning, Raggedy. How wonderful to see Burt complete with bio. (hope our hawkman is all right)

You know, PA, for one moment, my mind went blank, and I couldn't recall one movie in which B.L. starred. Shocked

Now, that steamy scene on the beach comes to mind. Razz

I vaguely remember "The Birdman of Alcatraz", because it was based on a true story, as I recall. You have just inspired me to do more research.

From Eternity:

You vowed your love from here to eternity,
A love so true, it never would die.
You gave your lips, gave them so willingly,
How could I know your kiss meant good-bye?

Now I'm alone, with only a memory.
My empty arms will never know why.
Though you are gone, this love that you left with me
Will live from here to eternity.

Now I'm alone, with only a memory.
My empty arms will never know why.
Though you are gone, this love that you left with me
This endless desire, will live from here to eternity.

That was a good movie, Letty. I think I saw all of Burt Lancaster's movies.

I didn't know this about Burt: (from IMDb)

When Republican candidate George Bush referred to the American Civil Liberties Union as "un-American" during the 1988 presidential election, Lancaster responded by appearing in a television advertisement in which he said, "My name is Burt Lancaster and I've a confession to make. I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU.".

A lifelong Democrat and liberal activist, Lancaster appeared prominently on President Richard Nixon's "List of Enemies" due to his support for Senator George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election.

He was nearly blacklisted in the late 1940s due to his liberal political beliefs, and the FBI kept a file detailing his activities.

(I did know that we was an avid opera fan. Smile )
