from RexRed's link (what a hoot!)

Quote:
Dear Donald:
I am sending your angel nephews Louie, Huey and Dewey, to stay with you while their father is in the hospital. A giant firecracker exploded under his chair. The little darlings are so playful. I hope you enjoy them.
Your cousin,
Della.

We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place
the Animals

In this dirty old part of the city where the sun refuse to shine
People tell me there ain't no use in trying
Now, my girl, you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true,
You'll be dead before your time is due, (I know)

Watch my daddy in bed and dying
Watch his hair been turning grey
He's been working and slaving his life away, (Oh yes I know)

He's been working so hard
I've been working too baby, (every night and day)

(Chorus)
We've gotta get out of this place
if it's the last thing we ever do
We've gotta get out of this place
Girl there's a better life for me and you

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, (I know it)

Watch my daddy in bed and dying
Watch his hair been turning grey
He's been working and slaving his life away (I know)

He's been working so hard
I've been working too baby,

(Chorus)

Somewhere baby
Somehow I know it baby

(Chorus)

Believe me baby
I know it baby
You know it too

This is really great, y'all. The history of ducks and their names and from whence they came. Thanks, Rex and ehBeth.

edgar, you followed perfectly with the Animal's song. Let's hear Melanie's version of a cracker and an animal.

Melanie
ยป Animal Crackers

Oh, eat your animal crackers
'Cause my mother told me so long ago,
"If you eat your animal crackers,
The children in Europe won't starve anymore".
Ha ha hahaha hahaha.
Oh, once I went on a diet,
A carbohydrate diet ain't nice
'Cause you can't eat animal crackers.
So, I'm gonna stay a fatty for all of my life,
Ha ha hahaha hahahaha.
But some people think that fatties are nice, yeah.
I love eating icecream,
Chocolate, vanilla and butter pecan,
But I best love animal crackers
'Cause I love helping my fellow man.
Yeah, I really do.
Did you ever hear of Alice's restaurant?
I eat at Alice's restaurant year after year.
She makes an animal cracker pizza, ha
And she gives animal crackers out free with the beer.
Oh, let's give Alice a great big cheer.
She knows the age of the animal cracker is here.
Ah, animal crackers are in this year!
Ha ha hahaha.
Oh, lalalalala lala lala

Ma Belle Amie

Ma Belle Amie
You were a child of the sun and the sky
and the deep blue sea.
Ma Belle Amie.
Apres' tous les beaux jours je te dis merci merci.
You were the answer on all my questions
before we're through.
I want to tell you that I adore you
and always do.
That you amaze me by leaving me now and start anew
Ma Belle Amie
I'm in love with you.

Let the bells ring
let the bird sing
let's all give my substitute a big cheer.
Let the bells ring.
let the birds sing
for the man after him waits here.

Ma Belle Amie
you were a child of the sun and the sky
and the deep blue sea.
Ma Belle Amie.
There was a time that you thought
that your only friend was me.

My Cherie Amour

My cherie amour, lovely as a summer day. My cherie amour, distant as the milky way.
My cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore, you're the only girl my heart beats for,
how I wish that you were mine.

In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street, I've been near you, but you never noticed me.
My cherie amour, won't you tell me how could you ignore
that behind that little smile I wore, how I wish that you were mine.

Maybe someday, you'll see my face among the crowd.
Maybe someday, I'll share your little distant cloud.
Oh, cherie amour, pretty little one that I adore, you're the only girl my heart beats for,
how I wish that you were mine.

Michelle, ma belle, these are words that go together well, myMichelle
Michelle, ma belle, sontles mots qui vont tres bien ensemble, tres bienensemble

I love you, I love you, I love you, that's all I want to say
until I find a way
I will say the only words I know that you'll understand.

Chorus

I need you, I need you, I need you, I need to make you see
oh what you mean to me
until I do I'm hoping you will know what I mean

Chorus

I want you, I want you, I want you, I think you know by now
I'll get to you somehow
until I do I'm telling you so you'll understand

Michelle, ma belle sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble, tres bienensemble
I will say the only words I know that you'll understand, my Michelle

Missed your song, Beth, and I love Stevie Wonder.

Hey, folks. We've had Greece, Canada, U.S. and France via the songs. Love it. We need Spain here as well.

BACKSTREET BOYS from the album Millennium

[Chorus:]
It's a place I've never been
And it comes from deep within
And it's telling me
That I'm about to win first prize
Knowing all I have to do
Is reach out my hand to you
Anytime I want to look into your Spanish eyes

Let it be if we're nothing more than dreamers
Who believe that we see no one between us
How can they be in my heart
And in my mind
When all I can find
When I look into your Spanish eyes
I know the reason why I am alive
And the world is so beautiful tonight

[Chorus]

I loved you from a distance
Thought I couldn't reach that far
I can't believe how close that we are
When I look into your Spanish eyes
And the world is so beautiful tonight

[Chorus]

News break from the Cape:

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - For the first time in almost a year, NASA was set to launch a space shuttle Saturday on a mission that will test whether the space agency has reduced the risks of flying in the 25-year-old vehicles.

As the astronauts finished strapping into the space shuttle one by one, thunder clouds moved closer to the Kennedy Space Center and threatened to delay the 3:48 p.m. EDT blastoff of Discovery in what would be only the second launch since the Columbia disaster in 2003.

Dressed in their neon orange spacesuits, the astronauts waved and gave thumbs up as they boarded the astrovan to go to the pad.

Vice President Dick Cheney was among the dignitaries expected to attend the launch.

A last-minute technical problem popped up Saturday morning, with the failure of a heater used to keep propellant from freezing in a firing thruster. The thruster isn't used during launch, but it can control the shuttle's position in space and during a rendezvous with the international space station.

"stompin' tom" is back on the road this summer performing in many ontario entertainment centres , such as brampton , belleville , hamilton ...
it's too bad we don't see him on TV anymore ... a great and funny performer .

here's tom with "the skidaddler"
(TTC refers to "the toronto transit commission")
(the "big red rattler" refers to the "red rocket" - the old style streetcars)

http://transit.toronto.on.ca/images/streetcar-4705-41.jpg

I'm a TTC Skidaddler yeah to sockit to my big red rattler-
Ya to sockit to my big red rattler
I've been a streetcar driver now about eleven years
& I know the old Toronto city well
There's a whole lotta people who wait along the track
For the signal from my clangin trolley bell...
Chorus:
Put the pole upon the wire now and open up the switch-
It's time to get old rattler sparkin through.
She's red around the bottom and she's yellow on the top
And I drive er' like a driver oughta do...
Chorus:
I love my little wife at home I love my couple kids
They often take the trolley to the park-
They know their daddy's drivin the people here and there,
But I'll be back again to pick them up at dark.
Chorus:
Don't forget your ticket when I open up the door-
Kindly make your way along the aisle
I'll drive ya down to work and I'll safely bring ya back
And I'll try to render service with a smile
Chorus:
I'm a TTC skidaddler...
I been a street car driver now about eleven years
And I know the old Toronto city well
There's a whole lot of people who wait along the track.
For the signal from my clangin trolley bell.
Chorus:
Ya ta sockit to my big red rattler repeat 3 times...

Hey, hbg. Well, I must admit that I have never heard of Stompin' Tom, but that song had a lot of familiar words in it, particularly, "skiddale." This has been one of those days that everything reminds me of something else. I like his picture, buddy, and many of our listeners will get a kick out of the old street car on the tracks. I always wanted to ride one of those. Well, Tom must be a.....

Smooth Operator

He's laughing with another girl
And playing with another heart.
Placing high stakes, making hearts ache.
He's loved in seven languages.
Diamond nights and ruby lights, high in the sky.
Heaven help him, when he falls.

Diamond life, lover boy.
We move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy.
City lights and business nights.
When you require streetcar desire for higher heights.

No place for beginners or sensitive hearts
When sentiment is left to chance.
No place to be ending but somewhere to start.

No need to ask.
He's a smooth operator,
Smooth operator,
Smooth operator,
Smooth operator.

Coast to coast, la to Chicago, western male.
Across the north and south, to key largo, love for sale.

Face to face, each classic case.
We shadow box and double cross,
Yet need the chase.

A license to love, insurance to hold.
Melts all your memories and change into gold.
His eyes are like angels but his heart is cold.

recently dys was dissing patchouli
al stewart had this to say about said essence

Year Of The Cat
Al Stewart

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat

Well, she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat

Well, morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometimes you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

Smooth Operator - Sarah Vaughn

Cha cha cha cha...)

You're a smooth operator (uh huh)
You're a cool sweet potato (oh, yeah)

Kiss me, baby
Don't make me wait
Hug me, honey
Don't you hesitate

Take my heart and
Don't give it back
(Cha cha cha cha...)
I like it like that

You're a smooth operator (uh huh)
You're a gone alligator (oh, yeah)

Ooh, tell me, baby
Whatcha gonna do
You got me sighing
Wishing for you

But I'm here to tell you
One natural fact
(Cha cha cha cha...)
I like it like that

You've got me yearning
Top40db.com
Top40db.net
Top40db.org.
Burning with desire
You set my heart
And soul on fire

You drive me wild
You make me shout
Have mercy, Mr. Percy
Now cut that out

You're a smooth operator (uh huh)
Woo, you're the end of
Butter greater (oh, yeah)

When you kiss me, baby
My toenails curl
And I'm so glad
Just to be your girl

I'd be happy
In a one room shack
(Cha cha cha cha...)
Mmm, I like it like that
I like it like that

(Cha cha cha cha...)

I like it, I like it
I like it...

Big smile for you, dj. Love that song, and it reminded me of a book that I read called, Touch Not the Cat. See what I mean?

Now, Canada, I could look up patchouli, but please don't make me, honey. I have been having trouble all day with google. Just ask Calamity Jane. Rolling Eyes

edgar, do you mean that Sarah Vaughn did an operator song as well? Fantastic, Texas.

ehBeth has just reminded hbg of something on CTV. Love it!

Well, for some reason, dj, you made me laugh again. Talk about a panacea. Wonder what else patchouli can do? Write a poem? Thanks for the completeness. Wordsworth was a plant man, but here is a poem of another type:

William Wordsworth

Up! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
Or surely you'll grow double:
Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
Why all this toil and trouble?

The sun above the mountain's head,
A freshening lustre mellow
Through all the long green fields has spread,
His first sweet evening yellow.

Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife:
Come, hear the woodland linnet,
How sweet his music! on my life,
There's more of wisdom in it.

And hark! how blithe the throstle sings!
He, too, is no mean preacher:
Come forth into the light of things,
Let Nature be your Teacher.

She has a world of ready wealth,
Our minds and hearts to bless
Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health,
Truth breathed by cheerfulness.

One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man,
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the sages can.

Sweet is the lore which Nature brings;
Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:
We murder to dissect.

Enough of Science and of Art;
Close up those barren leaves;
Come forth, and bring with you a heart
That watches and receives.

"patchouli = eau de vampire"
http://i12.ebayimg.com/02/i/01/c5/f1/2a_1.JPG

speaking of being reminded of something else ...
i'm sure i haven't heard the word patchouli in a long - a very long time .
as young fellows in germany we would call patchouli a perfume for "old ladies" Shocked
i remember that we had "an old lady" - she must have been almost 60 ! Smile - working in our office and we young guys would make sniffing noises whenever she entered Shocked !

Water of Vampire, hbg? Maybe we all should start a medicine show and hawk our wares. (ah, missed our hawkman today)

Hey, kids do that when something they smell becomes cloying. We all did at one time or another.

I just remember something from grad school. One of the things that shocked me concerned turn of the century women who lived on Lydia Pinkham tonic, or some such thing. Our prof told us that they were the drug addicts of the day, and didn't know it. I'll have to do more research on that, I guess.

WITH YOUR FACE TO THE WIND

With your face to the wind, I see you smilin' again
Spirit's movin' within, I know that you're gonna win

You've been down this road before
Somethin' inside tells you what's in store
Gotta remember what we're all here for
Ya gotta eat up the apple and spit out the core

With your face to the wind, I see you smilin' again
Spirit's movin' within, I know that you're gonna win

You can get angry, you can curse
You can shout it out in rhyme or verse
And you can tell me that it's never been worse
Then take that old sows ear and turn it into a purse

With your face to the wind, I see you smilin' again
Spirit's movin' within, I know that you're gonna win

There are gifts that come like the rain
They make the plants grow, they drench you all the same
And there are gifts that took you years to see
Like the gift of the friend that you've been to me

Yes there are hands here to comfort you
And if you need there are tears to cry with you too
And there are hearts that will sing with you
And voices to cheer when you've finally made it through

With your face to the wind, I see you smilin' again
Spirit's movin' within, I know that you're gonna win

Sometimes it takes the dark to let us see the light
You can't have that victory unless you've fought the fight
Sometimes it takes a winding road to lead us home
While you're windin' 'round my friend just don't go windin' 'round alone

With your face to the wind, I see you smilin' again
Spirit's movin' within, I know that you're gonna win

Peter, Paul & Mary
