Well, there's our bio Bob, listeners. He's early today with his celeb background. I think our listeners know most of the celebs, hawkman, but the one who I was not familiar with was E.E. Smith. Thanks for the info, buddy.

Loved your list facts that seem obvious, but aren't. That sorta reminds me of "Who's buried in Grant's tomb?" Mrs. Grant. <smile>

Inspired once again by the Where Am I Thread, Dutchy was kind enough to provide me with the following lyrics to a haunting song that I came across quite by accident while waiting for Walter to post a place:

ASHOKAN FAREWELL
The sun is sinking low in the sky above Ashokan,
The pines and the willows know soon we will part.
There's a whisper in the wind of promises unspoken,
And a love that will always remain in my heart.

My thoughts will return to the sound of your laughter,
The magic of dancing, of moving as one.
And a time we'll remember long ever after
The moonlight and music and dancing are done.

Will we climb the hills once more?
Will we walk the woods together?
Will I feel you holding me close once again?
Will every song we've sung stay with us forever?
Will you dance in my dreams or my arms until then?

Under the moon the mountains lie sleeping,
Over the lake the stars shine.
They wonder if you and I will be keeping,
The magic and music, or leave them behind.

The melody is lovely and is comprised by a harp and flute only. I will try giving a link later.

Good Morning all.

I see Letty posted Ashokan Farewell. That beautiful melody was featured in the PBS series about the Civil War and although I had found the tune on the net and saved it a few years ago, I'll be darned if I can't locate it now. Here's a link (play it now), although it certainly doesn't do the lovely melody justice.

"Ashokan Farewell" is the title theme of the television miniseries The Civil War, which aired on PBS in 1990. It was composed by Jay Ungar in 1982 in the style of a Scottish lament (e.g. Niel Gow's lament for his second wife) or Irish air. The most famous arrangement of the piece begins with a solo violin, later accompanied by guitar.

Although it is a modern piece, viewers of the The Civil War frequently, and erroneously, believe it was written and performed during the Civil War. In fact, it is the only modern composition in the soundtrack; all other music is authentic 19th century music.

The piece is named for the Ashokan Field Campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz, where Ungar and his wife Molly Mason hold their Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps for adults and families each year. (Ashokan was also once a village, now mostly covered by the pristine Ashokan Reservoir in the Catskill Mountains.)"

I got so excited about Ashokan Farewell, I forgot to post the B.D. picture.

Happy Birthday Mr. Bikel.

Raggedy, Thank you, dear, for that background on the lovely song as I so enjoyed listening to it. Once again our favorite researcher has provided us with pictures of a birthday boy. I'm afraid that I don't know Mr. Bikel, but I shall shortly. <smile>

Incidentally, for those of you who love harp and flute, here is a reference to that song. I hope it works.

That's what I was looking for, Letty. Thank you. It is so beautiful and if you saw the Civil War documentary on PBS, I'm sure it will bring some tears your way.

I didn't see the Civil War documentary, Raggedy. I tend to avoid those things as I get inundated with geneology from my oldest sister. <smile>

I found that melody while trying to locate a picture of Walter's area of the world to post on the Where Am I Thread. It seems so odd to look for one thing and come across another, no?

Well, listeners. Here's a news item that remembers something not so light as that song:

50 years on, echoes of tragic past haunt Japan's Minamata city Sun Apr 30, 10:17 PM ET

MINAMATA, Japan (AFP) - First cats began to die. Then dead fish floated to the surface of the sea and crows fell lifeless to the ground. But still the people of Minamata had no idea what was about to happen to them.

Long before health problems were officially reported 50 years ago -- and much later found as being caused by massive mercury poisoning -- residents of this small Japanese fishing town in southwestern Kyushu island had seen eerie portents.

As rats ran amok, people began to notice inexplicable problems with their bodies -- shivering arms and legs, seizures, and difficulty in walking and talking. Some adults died and infant mortality rocketed.

Even after the problems were officially reported by a local hospital on May 1, 1956, no one knew what was behind the outbreak of what would come to be named Minamata disease, but it was certain that something was drastically wrong.

As it turns out, the cause was vast quantities of mercury, attributed to a giant corporation, that had been dumped into the sea.

Good afternoon all. I hope you are feeling a little better Miss Letty.

I missed the report yesterday which stated the Dead Sea lost a third of its mass. If true, careless comes to mind. I must find out more.

In the meantime, to all those of you who areĀ…

"Kinks Dedicated Follower Of Fashion lyrics"

They seek him here, they seek him there,
His clothes are loud, but never square.
It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best,
'cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

And when he does his little rounds,
'round the boutiques of london town,
Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends,
'cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He thinks he is a flower to be looked at,
And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight,
He feels a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
There's one thing that he loves and that is flattery.
One week he's in polka-dots, the next week he is in stripes.
'cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

They seek him here, they seek him there,
In regent street and Leicester square.
Everywhere the carnabetian army marches on,
Each one an dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
His world is built 'round discotheques and parties.
This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best
'cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).
He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly.
In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be,
'cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.
He's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Hey, Try. I have been following such. Anyone here ever read Rachel Carson's "Silent Sea"? Another prophet, I think.

I'm feeling a little better, thank you, Try. Still wear my heart on my sleeve, however. Is that fashionable? <smile>

Love that song, buddy. It does rather define many of us.

How about this one for my friend's daughter who sang it rather well:

A country dance was being held in a garden
I felt a bump and heard an 'Oh, beg your pardon'
Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams
All around a pug-nosed dream
The music started and was I the perplexed one
I held my breath and said 'May I have the next one?'
In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams
Sparkled on a pug-nosed dream
There were questions in the eyes of other dancers
As we floated over the floor
There were questions but my heart knew all the answers
And perhaps a few things more
Now in a cottage built of lilacs and laughter
I know the meaning of the words 'Ever after'
And I'll always see polka dots and moonbeams
When I kiss the pug-nosed dream.

You know, listeners, as I recall, Oscar Peterson did that one. Remembering way back, in a discussion with my sister, I believe he quit doing vocals because he and Nat Cole sounded too much alike.

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you

I'm gonna write words oh so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em

I'm gonna smile and say
I hope you're feeling better
I'll close with love the way you do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And I'm gonna make believe it came from you

Oh yeah

I'm gonna write words oh so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em

Oh yeah

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And I'm make believe it came from you
Oh yeah
I'm gonna make believe it came from you

Oh yeah

Actually, I think, writing some postcards from the USA will be a better idea

chorus:
We're having a lovely time, wish you were here
We're having a lovely time, wish you were here

There's miles of frankfurters and people who hurt us in Germany
We haven't played since yesterday
There's just ten more shows and one week to go
We'd all like to go

chorus

Great piles of spaghetti, bad vibes like confetti in Italy
We go by train and not by plane
We'd come home by car if it wasn't too far
To drive home by car

Hope you're well at home,
Next week I'll try to phone,
Not very long to go,
I'll tell you when I'm coming home as soon as I know

chorus

There's lots of French fries, disapproving eyes in the U.S.A.
We've had no shows since I don't know
There's just one thing wrong, we've been here too long
The money's all gone

chorus

There's kangaroos and we're bad news in Australia
Thrown off the plane for drinking beer
So long on the plane it drove us insane
So long on the plane

Hope you're well at home,
Next week I'll try to phone
Not very long to go
I'll tell you when I'm coming home as soon as I know

chorus

We've done very well, but we've been to hell and heaven as well

That doesn't sound very, very nice either, I think Laughing

Well, there's our Walter folks. Thanks, buddy for the info. I should never have posted that long link, but I didn't know how else to get folks to listen to the song.

Any requests, Germany? I remember you liked "I've Got a Brand New Pair of roller Skates". Razz

You know, I just found out that Oscar Peterson is still alive and playing, even after several strokes. He has won all sorts of awards. Marvelous piano player.

Strange, the musician who sang with our jazz quartet and did that letter song lives in Virginia Beach. Love it, buddy.

Hey, Raggedy. Missed you as well, PA. I'm with you, gal. We need to bend and stretch once in a while.

That's a good song as well, listeners. Believe it or not, about the only thing that gets me down is stress on the home front.

We haven't played any Vera Lynn in a while. Back later with one.
