Hi everyone!

While I was fishing in the river last week I found two interesting rocks and I am really curious what they are.

Here is the first one which is like nothing I've seen in the river before.

Here is the second one, which is more common in my area, but it has always puzzled me what it is.

*This one is the same size as the first one pretty much, since I forgot to put coin*

Thanks!

@Conannet,
somewhere in new Brunswick? do the vinegar drop test on the first to see if its got carbonate.(it could be reef segment), or else a "clinker"
Its hqrd to tell without some more tests like
sp grqvity, scrtch test, look for any fossils in those little depressions

The second rock is interesting. It reminds me of a nepheline syentite with some dense quartz but let us know whqt that rock scratches (Window glass, plastic?). have access to an ultraviolet light?
Did the area for this rock be anyqhere Cape Blomiden?

@farmerman,
I live in Bulgaria, thus meaning there are no reefs or anything like that hundrets of miles from here. Right now I cant do a vinegar test, so I'll post tomorrow.

About the second rock it scratches glass and plastic easily, but I dont have uv light.

@farmerman,
I did the vinegar test and the rock did not react with it, so its not a reef segment.

@Conannet,
I think the second rock is polished haematite, a form of iron ore, while the first rock appears to be slag from some sort of other metal processing. Is there any history of mining or smelting where you found the rocks?

@Cumberland Noodle,
Not really... I live in the lowlands and there isnt really much going on here. Only a limestone quarry nearby. Also the second rock is not attracted by magnet at all, and its not magnetic (hematite should be right?). Here are some pictures of pieces of iron ore I've found around here (no idea where they've come from):
